DESCRIPTION:Red Grooms (b. 1937\, Nashville\; lives in New York City) and
Lysiane Luong (b. 1951\, Paris\; lives in New York City). Commissioned by
Museum of the Moving Image \nTut’s Fever is a working movie theater and
art installation created by Red Grooms and Lysiane Luong\, an homage to t
he ornate\, exotic picture palaces of the 1920s. Inspired by the tomb pain
tings they saw during a trip to Egypt\, Grooms and Luong covered the walls
\, floor and seats of the theater with hand-painted\, Egyptian-style depic
tions of Hollywood royalty. Silent screen star Theda Bara works the box of
fice\, Mae West stands behind the concessions stand\, and Mickey Rooney is
the usher. Rudolf Valentino\, Elizabeth Taylor and many others grace the
walls\, and each slipcovered chair in the theater features an image of Rit
a Hayworth. Visitors can open a sarcophagus to find a sculpture of James D
ean lying in his tomb\, cigarette still dangling from his mouth. \nTut’s
Fever is a permanent feature of the Museum’s core exhibition\, Behind
the Screen. Visitors can explore the installation and sit down and watch
classic movie serials and short films (playing in a loop) during Museum ho
 urs.\n\nOngoing through December 31\, 2030.

DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of Todd Haynes’s latest feature\, May Decemb
er (2023)\, and the Museum’s celebration of the director at the Winter M
oving Image Awards\, MoMI is pleased to present an exhibit with materials
from the archives of filmmaker Todd Haynes\, now part of the Museum’s co
llection.  \nHaynes draws deeply on artistic and historical sources\, ref
racting them into films that subvert conventional narratives and genres\,
and feature characters who transgress from social constraints. May Decembe
r exemplifies his interest in cinematic storytelling as a mirror that refl
ects more than what is visible on the surface.   \nThis exhibit focuses
on five of Haynes’s films that explicitly invoke historical figures or e
ras: May December (2023)\, I’m Not There (2007)\, Far from Heaven (2002)
\, Velvet Goldmine (1998)\, and Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987
). Featuring image books that he meticulously compiles as preparation and
inspiration for each film\, as well as sketches\, paintings\, notes\, and
an excerpt from his 2023 metacinematic short film Image Book\, shot on the
set of May December\, Reflected Forms: Story and Character in the Films o
f Todd Haynes offers a glimpse into his process of transforming historical
and cultural referents into formally ambitious\, richly emotional films.
\nThe exhibit will be on view in the Museum’s core exhibition\, Behin
 d the Screen.\n\nOngoing through November 24\, 2043.

DESCRIPTION:Dir. Rouben Mamoulian. 1932\, 88 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Maur
ice Chevalier\, Jeanette MacDonald\, Charles Ruggles. This complete and to
tal comic delight of the early sound era\, featuring music by Rodgers & Ha
rt\, is a constant dazzler from the always innovative Rouben Mamoulian (Ap
plause\, Dr. Jekyll and Mr\, Hyde\, Becky Sharp)\, whose cinematic experi
mentation knew no bounds or genre. Here\, he dives into the Ruritanian mu
sical\, casting early-thirties superstar Maurice Chevalier as a jovial tai
lor who tries to collect on a bill from a Count—and falls in love with a
princess. From its opening sequence\, with the camera floating over the r
ooftops and through the streets of Paris (Paris\, Hollywood\, that is)\, L
ove Me Tonight was the first truly modern movie musical. The songs (incl
uding “Mimi” and “Isn’t It Romantic”) are perfectly integrated i
nto the narrative\, and Mamoulian showed how to turn a theatrical form int
 o a cinematic experience. \nTickets: $17.50 / $12 senior and students / $1

DESCRIPTION:Please note: this print has a deep emulsion scratch down the c

 e Campion. 2003\, 102 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Meg Ryan\, Mark Ruffalo\, Jenn
ifer Jason Leigh\, Kevin Bacon\, Sharrief Pugh. Oscar-winning director Jan
e Campion fashioned a highly unusual\, evocative\, and exquisitely shot er
otic thriller that initially baffled audiences but now has come to be wide
ly admired. Adapted from a novel by Susannah Moore\, In the Cut stands a
part for the way it creates unsettling cinematic tension by entering a
woman’s perspective\, telling the story of a schoolteacher and writer
(Meg Ryan\, in a performance of rare reserve and dramatic interiority) wh
o becomes sexually attracted to a boorish detective (Mark Ruffalo) invest

 mber 4 \nDir. Martin Scorsese. 1995\, 178 mins. 35mm. With Robert De Niro\
 , Sharon Stone\, Joe Pesci\, James Woods\, Don Rickles. Scorsese’s breat

ino operations and the larger scope of human betrayal. The film’s lavish
spectacle—its flashing marquee lights\, insider narration\, dizzying qu
ick cuts\, and infinite rainbow of costumes—effectively reflect the char
acters’ emotions and confusion. In an Oscar-nominated performance of bre

uished guests to introduce this semester’s films. \nAll students\, staff

ligari (Germany\, 1920) dir. Robert Wiene\nThe film is  quintessential wo
rk of early German Expressionist cinema\, it tells the story of a hypnotis
t (Werner Krauss) who uses a somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt) to commit
murders. The film features a dark\, twisted visual style\, with sharp-poin
ted forms\; oblique\, curving lines\; structures and landscapes that lean
and twist in unusual angles\; and shadows and streaks of light painted dir
ectly onto the sets. The set design is “anti-realistic\, claustrophobic
” and “harsh” which is “coupled with feverish anxiety [that] enter
ed the vocabulary of filmmakers and film viewers” particularly during th
e Weimar Republic\, when this film was made. \nGuest Speaker: Ernesto Pezz
i\nErnesto Pezzi is a film aficionado\, independent scholar\, teacher and

d director (Justin Theroux) must deal with interference from the criminal
underworld while casting his latest film. \nGuest Speaker: Geoff Klock\nGe
off Klock has a doctorate from Oxford and is an award-winning tenured full
professor at BMCC\; he has been teaching at CUNY since 2006. The central
work of his life involves using a kind of oneiric mental toolbox gathered
from famous elite artists and thinkers (Plato\, Shakespeare\, Freud\, Prou
st\, David Lynch) to navigate mass culture and life. \n\nSunday\, October
 4 at 7 p.m.\nRebecca (USA\, 1940) dir. Alfred Hitchcock (USA 1940)\nRebecc

cal horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written wi
th novelist Diane Johnson. It is based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel and
stars Jack Nicholson\, Shelley Duvall\, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers.
The film presents the descent into insanity of a recovering alcoholic and
aspiring novelist who takes a job as winter caretaker for a mountain resor
t hotel with his wife and clairvoyant son. \nGuest Speaker: Francesco Cler
ici\nFrancesco Adriano Clerici has a PhD in Cultural Studies from Humboldt

lue\, and not widely known. The cast includes Victor Sjöström in his fin
al screen performance as an old man recalling his past\, as well as Bergma
n regulars Bibi Andersson\, Ingrid Thulin\, and Gunnar Björnstrand. Max v
on Sydow and Gunnel Lindblom also appear in small roles. \nGuest Speaker:
David Schoolnik\nWhile studying philosophy and classics in graduate school
\, David Schoolnik discovered that it was more fun to watch\, think and ta
lk about movies than write papers on Kant. He still watches\, thinks and t
alks about movies while having switched his attention from philosophy to k
inetic studies via Pilates and Gyrotonic\, which makes sense\, since cinem
a and kinesis are etymologically the same. \n\nSunday\, November 15 at 7 p
 .m.\nParasite (South Korea\, 2019) dir. Bong Joon Ho\nParasite (Korean:

e Quiet Beekeeper! Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Göteborg Film
