 \n\n\nWhen Nashville became a Catholic diocese in 1837\, it was mostly an 
 aspirational exercise. The few Catholics scattered throughout the state we
 re ministered to only occasionally by missionary priests who traveled by h
 orseback from Kentucky. It is believed that Hugh Rogan\, who arrived in Mi
 ddle Tennessee in 1780 after working as a surveyor for the Continental Arm
 y\, did not see a priest for 50 years. That all changed when the Italian-b
 orn Father Aloysius “Luigi” Orengo arrived in Nashville in 1848. He tr
 aveled all over the state\, sleeping in the woods\, using his saddle for a
  pillow\, and eating cheese and crackers. He’s credited with building ch
 urches in Franklin\, Columbia\, Pulaski\, East Nashville\, Tracy City\, Ga
 llatin\, Humboldt\, Brownsville\, Grand Junction\, Covington\, Jackson\, a
 nd McEwen. But for as influential as he was\, Father Orengo’s story rema
 ined untold\, until now.

DESCRIPTION:Ayana Mathis is on the faculty of the MFA Program in Creative 
 Writing at Hunter College\, CUNY. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’
  Workshop\, where she became the first African American woman to become an
  assistant professor in that program. Her most recent novel\, The Unsettl
 ed (Knopf\, 2023)\, was named a New York Times and Washington Post No

 iscussion\, in conjunction with Vanderbilt University–New York City. Th
 rough deep attention and thoughtful language\, at its best\, poetry makes 
 room for revelations that transcend headlines of geopolitical conflicts an
 d cultural battles. Poetry urges us to inhabit a more contemplative realm 
 of existence\, however mysterious\, and to observe how we are miraculously
  convened on Earth. This landmark reading gathers prominent American write
 rs whose essays and poetry instigate greater awareness of our spiritual jo
 urneys and the clarity of vision we seek.\n \nPádraig Ó Tuama is a poe
 t with interests in language\, violence\, power\, and religion. He is the 
 host of On Being’s Poetry Unbound and has published volumes of poetry\
 , essays\, a memoir and theology. Kitchen Hymns was shortlisted for the 
 Lambda Literary Award. His two anthologies from the Poetry Unbound series 
 have gathered widespread praise\, with author Elif Shafak calling it “Me
 smerising\, magical\, deeply moving…” In September 2026\, his collecti
 on Love Between Men will be published\, and he will take up the role as 
 the Mellon Professor of Spirituality and Poetry at Yale Divinity School.\n
 Former Poet Laureate of the United States\, Tracy K. Smith is a Pulitzer
  Prize-winning poet\, memoirist\, editor\, translator and librettist. Smi
 th is the author of six poetry collections: The Forest\, forthcoming from
  Graywolf Press in March 2027\; Such Color: New and Selected Poems\, whic
 h won the 2022 New England Book Award\; Wade in the Water\, which was awa
 rded the 2018 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award\; Life on Mars\, which won the 20
 12 Pulitzer Prize\; Duende\, winner of the 2006 James Laughlin Award of t

  the 2003 Cave Canem Prize. Her memoir\, Ordinary Light\, was a finalist
