DESCRIPTION:We live within a wider Earth-community\, alive with many ways 
 of being and knowing\, and with diverse forms of agency\, sentience\, inte
 lligence\, and communication. Anthropologist Eduardo Kohn asks\, “How do
  forests think?” The Rights of Nature movement wonders\, “Who is the r
 iver in front of us?” These questions invite another: Who are the more-t
 han-human communities that make up the living congregation of this world\,
  and what does it mean to belong to them? \nThis session turns toward the 
 philosophical and ethical ground beneath regenerative apiculture. We will 
 explore key currents in Deep Ecology and consider how they can inform nove
 l pathways of honeybee stewardship and conservation\, especially in a time
  when ecological relationships are being rapidly reshaped. \nDrawing from 
 contemporary work across the humanities\, ecological science\, and Rights 
 of Nature thought\, we will examine how our frameworks of meaning shape ou
 r practices. What changes when we meet honeybees not as resources\, but as
  participants in shared worlds\, bearing their own purposes and forms of i
 ntelligence? How might conservation evolve when it is rooted in relationsh
 ip\, responsibility\, and humility\, rather than control? \nTopics include
 \n\nDeep Ecology as a foundation for stewardship\, and what it offers rege
 nerative apiculture\nRights of Nature perspectives\, and how they reshape 
 the ethics of care and coexistence\nMore-than-human intelligence and commu
 nication\, with attention to perception\, meaning\, and relationship\nCons
 ervation as cultural practice\, including language\, worldview\, and the s
 tories that guide action\nA holistic approach to honeybee care\, integrati
 ng science with ethics\, philosophy\, and lived belonging\n\nThis live-str
 eamed workshop is designed for interactive learning and lively conversatio
 n\, welcoming participants of all experience levels. Led by Michael Thiele
  and the Apis Arborea team\, it cultivates a deeper relationship with the 
 wisdom of wild honeybees and supports a grounded reimagining of apiculture
  in harmony with living ecosystems. \nRecordings will be available after t

DESCRIPTION:For our next gathering\, the Salon travels to the forests of U
 kraine. \nWe welcome Maksym Bortnyk\, researcher of traditional tree beeke
 eping and founder of Садиба Бортника\, the Beekeeper’s Hom
 estead\, a cultural and educational center for bortnytstvo\, the ancient U
 krainian practice of tending honeybees in the trees. Reaching back to the 
 era of Kyivan Rus\, bortnytstvo keeps colonies in hand-hewn log hives rais
 ed high in the forest\, where the bees live close to the way they would in
  a wild hollow. \nMaksym founded the homestead in 2021\, carving log hives
 \, welcoming wandering swarms into them\, brewing honey mead in wooden bar
 rels\, and drawing beeswax candles by hand. In 2022 he joined the Armed Fo
 rces of Ukraine\, serving until his discharge for health reasons in 2024\,
  when he returned to his life’s work. He carries this tradition forward 
 today alongside his rehabilitation\, tending a rare collection of old bort
