 026. \n\nSnowball Earth is a geohistorical hypothesis coined by Joseph Kir
 schvink in 1992 that posits that our world was completely frozen\, or at l
 east in a slushy state\, for a period of some hundreds of millions of year
 s. This global freeze is said to have ushered in the Avalon and Cambrian e
 xplosions\, sudden evolutionary events wherein metazoan biodiversity massi
 vely increased. In short\, this inhospitable state may have been the bottl
 eneck that triggered multicellularity\, the origin of what we know as comp
 lex life.\n\nThis theory is not without its skeptics. Opponents argue that
  if Earth were in fact to ever freeze over\, it would be impossible to tha
 w. For the same reason\, we humans fear stagnation— whether personal\, e
 conomic\, or environmental— as these too might result in an irreversible
  snowball. But it is precisely this period of incubation that welcomes the
  next stage. Growth is still underway while we wait for better conditions.

 ’s Coalfields examines how the foundational rights of life\, liberty\, a
 nd the pursuit of happiness—set forth in the Declaration of Independence
 —shaped the lives of mining families in the state’s coal communities. 
 Composed of historical images and interpretive text\, this seven-panel exh
 ibit explores how America’s founding principles strengthened miners’ e
 fforts to improve their workplaces\, livelihoods\, wellbeing\, and future\
 , often in revolutionary ways. \n\nThe concept of liberty through loyalty\
 , or “Libertas e Fidelitate\,” as inscribed on the reverse of the West
  Virginia state seal\, is twofold. Many mine operators promised opportunit
 ies for workers if they pledged allegiance to the coal companies\; labor o
 rganizers\, in turn\, offered increased rights in the workplace through fi
 delity to the union. Like American colonists who revolted against tyrannic
 al British rule\, miners and their families abandoned their loyalties when
  the coal industry treated them oppressively—and molded their own sense 
 of citizenship and civic duty in the coalfields. \n\nLibertas e Fidelitate
  invites viewers to consider not only what life\, liberty\, and the pursui
 t of happiness meant to the nation’s founders or to coal camp citizens\,
  but also what these ideas mean to us in 2026.

 ul Mesaros Galleries through Nov. 4\, 2026. \n\nSnowball Earth is a geohis
 torical hypothesis coined by Joseph Kirschvink in 1992 that posits that ou
 r world was completely frozen\, or at least in a slushy state\, for a peri
 od of some hundreds of millions of years. This global freeze is said to ha
 ve ushered in the Avalon and Cambrian explosions\, sudden evolutionary eve
 nts wherein metazoan biodiversity massively increased. In short\, this inh
 ospitable state may have been the bottleneck that triggered multicellulari
 ty\, the origin of what we know as complex life. \n\nThis theory is not wi
 thout its skeptics. Opponents argue that if Earth were in fact to ever fre
 eze over\, it would be impossible to thaw. For the same reason\, we humans
  fear stagnation— whether personal\, economic\, or environmental— as t
 hese too might result in an irreversible snowball. But it is precisely thi
 s period of incubation that welcomes the next stage. Growth is still under
 way while we wait for better conditions. After all\, the ingredients must 
 be prepared before the primordial soup is made. This is what the studio is
 . Artists are the soup\, or rather\, they are the ones making it.  \n\nIt 
 is this cycle of reflection and creation that drives the faculty of the Sc
 hool of Art & Design. It is what inspires their shared research interests 
 of sustainability and a global understanding of our place in the world. Th
 ere is no thaw without freeze\, no success without struggle\, no growth wi

 signer\, and educator whose interdisciplinary practice examines the relati

  sculpture\, installation\, architecture\, and digital fabrication\, her w
 ork investigates how objects and spaces carry coded and cultural narrative
 s and how design can engage questions of memory\, labor\, and environmenta
 l transformation. \n\nArtist Bio:\n\nVirginia San Fratello is an archi
 tect\, interior designer\, and educator. She is Chair of The Department of
  Design at San José State University in Silicon Valley. San Fratello 
 is a National Design Award winner for Digital Design and a winner of the I
 nternational Interior Design Educator of the Year Award. She is also a win
 ner of the Metropolis Magazine Next Gen Design Competition. Her creative
  practice\, Rael San Fratello\, was named an Emerging Voice by The
  Architectural League of New York\, and in 2021\, they were awarded the Be
 azley Design of the Year.  \n\nSan Fratello is the co-author of Printing A
 rchitecture: Innovative Recipes for 3D Printing\, a book that reexamines t
 he building process from the bottom up and offers illuminating case studie
 s for 3D printing with materials like chardonnay grape skins\, salt\, and 
 sawdust. She is a partner in Emerging Objects\, a creatively driven\, 3D P
 rinting MAKE-tank specializing in innovations in 3D printing architecture\
 , and a co-founder of Forust. \n\nHer work is recognized by several instit
 utions\, including The National Building Museum\, the Bellevue Museum\, Fo
 r Freedoms\, and is included in the permanent collection of The Museum
  of Modern Art in New York\, The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum\,
  The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the CSMVS Museum in Mumbai\, L

DESCRIPTION:Libertas e Fidelitate: Rights and Revolution in West Virginia
 ’s Coalfields examines how the foundational rights of life\, liberty\, a
 nd the pursuit of happiness—set forth in the Declaration of Independence
 —shaped the lives of mining families in the state’s coal communities. 
 Composed of historical images and interpretive text\, this seven-panel exh
 ibit explores how America’s founding principles strengthened miners’ e
 fforts to improve their workplaces\, livelihoods\, wellbeing\, and future\
 , often in revolutionary ways. \n\nThe concept of liberty through loyalty\
 , or “Libertas e Fidelitate\,” as inscribed on the reverse of the West
  Virginia state seal\, is twofold. Many mine operators promised opportunit
 ies for workers if they pledged allegiance to the coal companies\; labor o
 rganizers\, in turn\, offered increased rights in the workplace through fi
 delity to the union. Like American colonists who revolted against tyrannic
 al British rule\, miners and their families abandoned their loyalties when
  the coal industry treated them oppressively—and molded their own sense 
 of citizenship and civic duty in the coalfields. \n\nLibertas e Fidelitate
  invites viewers to consider not only what life\, liberty\, and the pursui
 t of happiness meant to the nation’s founders or to coal camp citizens\,
  but also what these ideas mean to us in 2026.

DESCRIPTION:Ginger Brooks Takahashi is a transdisciplinary artist and educ
 ator based in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. Her performance\, installation\, 
 and site responsive works examine our relationships to the mediums that co
 nnect us. These public projects are platforms for intimate interaction\, a
 n extension of feminist and queer praxis. Ginger holds a BA from Oberlin C
 ollege\, attended the Whitney Independent Study Program\, and holds an MFA
  in Interdisciplinary Art from School of the Art Institute Chicago. Her wo
 rk has been supported by Carnegie Mellon University’s Frank-Ratchye Furt
 her Fund\, Cooper Union’s Ida Applebroog Grant\, and Office of Public Ar
 t’s\, Environment\, Health and Public Art Initiative. She has exhibited 
 at institutions including Brooklyn Museum\, 2024\; Counterpublics Triennia
 l\, 2023\; Oakland Museum of California\, 2019\; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015\;
  Museo Tamayo\, 2010\; New Museum\, 2009. Takahashi is known for her contr
 ibutions to queer and underground culture—she was co-founder of queer an
 d feminist journal LTTR\; projet MOBILIVRE BOOKMOBILE project\, a touring 
 exhibit of artists books and zines\; the musical act MEN with JD Samson\; 
 and General Sisters\, a neighborhood space in North Braddock\, PA. In 2023
 \, she installed Drip\, Seep\, Run\, a permanent public artwork for Schenl
 ey Park in Pittsburgh and was also a resident in the Foundry at Kohler Art
 s/Industry where she developed Sheboygan Viewfinder. Her work Perilla Peop
 le’s Garden is currently on view at the 59th Carnegie International. \n\
 nArtist Statement: \n\nWorking with spaces\, language\, people and plants\
 , I create ephemeral experiences that ask questions about our surroundings
 \, our resources\, and how we might creatively co-exist. These conceptual 
 pieces manifest as installations\, assemblage\, shared meals\, garden desi
 gn\, and herbal elixirs. From a formal lens\, my work is site-responsive s
 culpture\, writing\, and performance\, making use of printmaking and self-
 publishing as tools. I examine histories and folk traditions\, grounding m
 y experimental practice. I am a project-based artist who launches large-sc
 ale public projects that are platforms for intimate interaction.

 ’s Coalfields examines how the foundational rights of life\, liberty\, a
 nd the pursuit of happiness—set forth in the Declaration of Independence
 —shaped the lives of mining families in the state’s coal communities. 
 Composed of historical images and interpretive text\, this seven-panel exh
 ibit explores how America’s founding principles strengthened miners’ e
 fforts to improve their workplaces\, livelihoods\, wellbeing\, and future\
 , often in revolutionary ways. \n\nThe concept of liberty through loyalty\
 , or “Libertas e Fidelitate\,” as inscribed on the reverse of the West
  Virginia state seal\, is twofold. Many mine operators promised opportunit
 ies for workers if they pledged allegiance to the coal companies\; labor o
 rganizers\, in turn\, offered increased rights in the workplace through fi
 delity to the union. Like American colonists who revolted against tyrannic
 al British rule\, miners and their families abandoned their loyalties when
  the coal industry treated them oppressively—and molded their own sense

 ’s Coalfields examines how the foundational rights of life\, liberty\, a
 nd the pursuit of happiness—set forth in the Declaration of Independence
 —shaped the lives of mining families in the state’s coal communities. 
 Composed of historical images and interpretive text\, this seven-panel exh
 ibit explores how America’s founding principles strengthened miners’ e
 fforts to improve their workplaces\, livelihoods\, wellbeing\, and future\
 , often in revolutionary ways. \n\nThe concept of liberty through loyalty\
 , or “Libertas e Fidelitate\,” as inscribed on the reverse of the West
  Virginia state seal\, is twofold. Many mine operators promised opportunit
 ies for workers if they pledged allegiance to the coal companies\; labor o
 rganizers\, in turn\, offered increased rights in the workplace through fi
 delity to the union. Like American colonists who revolted against tyrannic
 al British rule\, miners and their families abandoned their loyalties when
  the coal industry treated them oppressively—and molded their own sense 
 of citizenship and civic duty in the coalfields. \n\nLibertas e Fidelitate
  invites viewers to consider not only what life\, liberty\, and the pursui
