DESCRIPTION:The story of a city is the story of its people. However\, the 
 stories of ordinary people — people who are marginalized\, people
  who are neither rich\, powerful\, influential\, or famous — these
  stories tend to get left out of history books and are often forgotte
 n even by their descendants. In south Minneapolis\, there exists a comm
 unity of just such forgotten and overlooked individuals — all of the
 m deceased. This is Pioneer & Soldiers Memorial Cemetery\, the oldest 
 cemetery in Minneapolis and the final resting place for over 22\,000 a
 verage citizens buried between 1853 and 1919.  \nThe life stories of t
 his cemetery's occupants provide a fascinating and diverse cross-section 
 of Minneapolis history from the city's founding until its emergence as 
 a major metropolis. Join Alex Weston from  Hennepin History Museum for 
 this guided walking tour that will highlight forgotten individuals in 
 order to reconstruct a history of Minneapolis from the ground up via 
 the lives of its everyday residents.  \nContent Warning: this tour deals
  with sensitive topics including death\, depression\, infant and maternal 
 mortality\, poverty\, racism and racial violence\, slavery\, suicide\, and
  war.   \nAccessibility: The tour will consist of approximately 90 min
 utes of walking. Although there are no hills or inclines\, the cemetery 
 ground is fairly bumpy and uneven and may not be accessible to all. Ple
 ase wear appropriate footwear.  \nParking: Parking is available on the 
 paved street within the cemetery (one side only please\, to allow room fo
 r other vehicles to pass)\, and on the west side of Cedar Street and in th
 e surrounding neighborhood (please carefully observe all parking restricti

 aloons\, wild behavior\, lawsuits\, and whiskey. Join us for a one-mile wa
 lk where the mayhem occurred: crooks\, landowners\, hoteliers\, and saloon
  owners went to the Falls to turn a profit or to raise a little ruckus.  
 \nKaren Cooper\, whose work ‘When Minnehaha Flowed with Whiskey: A Spiri
 ted History of the Falls’ won the 2023 Minnesota Book Award for Nonficti
 on\, gives participants further background on the people and places that s
 hape this remarkable story. Through colorful anecdotes and thorough docume
 ntation\, she helps us picture the Minnehaha Falls area in a new light\, a
 nd helps us understand how this history formed the park we know and love t
 oday.  \nThis tour begins at the picnic table in front of the Longfellow 
 House\, 4800 S Minnehaha Dr\, Minneapolis\, and is approximately one mile 
 on uneven ground. Please wear comfortable shoes\, bring sunscreen/protecti
 ve clothing\, dress for the weather\, and bring your own water to stay hyd

 woman. On the shores of Lake Harriet\, she fought for her freedom and esca
 ped bondage. Join us at this site to learn more about her story through ta
 lks\, digital maps\, kids’ activities\, and an opportunity to help secur
 e a park bench in her name. \nThis community day is part of We Want More H
 istory\, a coordinated national day of programming to strengthen civic hea
 lth\, build community trust\, foster democratic dialogue\, and showcase th
 e vital role of history in public life. The event is supported by communit
 y historian & public school teacher Jason Benjamin\, who inspired this eff
 ort to honor Eliza Winston by creating a place where people can learn her 
 story\; Hennepin History Museum\, which currently has an exhibit about Eli
 za Winston\; Mapping Prejudice\, which used its digital mapping expertise 
 to identify the location of her escape from this place\; and history keepe
 rs in the community who will share the rich history of African Americans i
 n Minneapolis.
