DESCRIPTION:First documented in 1930\, the Black–White mortality crossov
er remains one of the most enduring paradoxes in Demography. Black America
ns experience higher age-specific mortality rates than White Americans thr
oughout most of the life course\, but this puzzlingly reverses at advanced
ages. The leading explanation for the Black-White mortality crossover cen
ters on selective mortality over the life course. Black Americans who surv
ived higher age-specific mortality risk throughout their life are highly s
elected on robustness and have lower mortality than White Americans in lat
e life. However\, skeptics argue the Black-White mortality crossover is si
mply a data artifact from age misreporting or related data quality issues.
  I use large-scale linked administrative data (N = 2.3 million) to documen
t the Black-White mortality crossover for cohorts born in the early 20th c
entury. I find evidence that the crossover is not a data artifact and litt
le support for the leading selective mortality explanation: mortality sele
ction on observed sociodemographic characteristics is limited\, and strati
fying on these characteristics does not eliminate the crossover.
