DESCRIPTION:Water has long shaped life in Japan. As an island nation surro
unded by the sea and nourished by abundant rainfall\, Japan depends on wat
er for its fertile landscapes and rich food sources. \nIn contemporary Jap
anese art\, water continues to be a powerful theme.  \nSound of Water: Fe
minine Expressions of Fluidity features paintings\, prints\, and sculpture
s by six Japanese women artists: Emiko Aida\, Miya Ando\, Yumiko Glover\,
Mineko Grimmer\, Yuko Kimura\, and Ayomi Yoshida. \nTheir works explore w
ater’s many moods and manifestations —serene and soft\, yet also power
ful and unpredictable—inviting us to consider our own relationship with
this essential element as we face climatic extremes throughout the world.
\nThe exhibition celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Japanese Garden at
Descanso Gardens and is curated by Japanese art historian Meher McArthur.
\nThe exhibition is open at the Sturt Haaga Gallery from June 20\, 2026
 –January 3\, 20276\, 10am–4pm daily. \nView the catalog \nEntry to the
Sturt Haaga Gallery is included in the price of admission or membership.

 he artist.\n\nSpecial Programs \nThursday\, August 27\, 10–11:30am — J
apanese Screen Art Workshop \n\nSound of Water: Feminine Expressions of Fl
uidity and its programs are generously funded\, in part\, by Perenchio F

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Rosten Woo\, LA’s Garden explores the hidden stor
ies rooted in the beauty of Descanso Gardens. \nWhile our 150 acres offer
 a natural escape\, they also hold a deep\, living history. \nDiscover who
shaped our collections and landscapes\, why they look the way they do\, an
d how they continue to change. The exhibition brings history to life by pa
iring archival maps\, documents\, and vintage photographs with contemporar
y artistic perspectives. \nAt Descanso\, the history of the plants is the
history of the people. From the ancient stewardship of indigenous communit
ies to the legacies of Japanese-American nurserymen and visionary voluntee
rs\, every plant tells a story of human passion and resilience. \nThe exhi

text is revered as the “Living Guru” and the center of Sikh worship.
Sikhs around the world recite\, perform\, and sing the sacred poems as a p
ractice of communal remembering\, spiritual gnosis\, and divine union. Yet
memory of what Sikh musical traditions were like before British colonizat
ion has gone nearly extinct. Before colonization\, Sikhs embraced diverse
streams of spirituality and music. But the rupture of colonization and wha
 t followed – Punjab’s partition\, nationalist identity politics\, and
the neo-liberal marketplace\, caused Sikh leaders to draw rigid boundaries
around their identity and their music.\n\nThe loss of performative and mu
sical memory spurred a critical renaissance beginning in the late 1980s to
recover and revive the remnants of Sikh knowledge contained in the musica
l heritage. Today Sikhs are reclaiming wisdom and memory to chart a new fu
ture for the community and offering their spiritual wisdom to a world in c
risis.\nThis talk argues that Sikh wisdom cannot be constrained by (post)c
olonial logics of conformity and closure. As a living stream of knowledge
of embodied pedagogy and praxis (jog or yoga)\, it resists hegemonic and h
omogenous notions of authority and authenticity altogether\, allowing for
diverse future creations.\nBio:\nNirinjan Kaur Khalsa-Baker is Professor o
f Teaching in Theological Studies and Yoga Studies at LMU where she teache
s classes on Sikh\, Jain\, and Yoga Studies. She is a Sikh musician and sc
holar who uses a decolonial and feminist lens to explore diversity\, belon
ging\, and power in religious communities\, pedagogies\, and practices. In
2024 she traveled the country on the Revolutionary Love Tour sharing Sikh
songs and stories of love and courage to nourish and strengthen communiti
 es during these divisive times.\n\n@DrNinjaKaur

DESCRIPTION:Note: If you are interested in attending this event\, please R
SVP here or select the "Register" button on this page.\n\nThe first Facult
y Pub Night of the 2026-27 season features Rudy Mondragón\, assistant pro
fessor of Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies (Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts).
He will discuss his recent publication\, "Rings of Dissent: Boxing and Pe
 rformances of Rebellion."\n\nAbout Faculty Pub Night\n\nStudents\, staff\,
faculty\, alumni\, and members of the public are all invited to the 2026-
27 series of Faculty Pub Night at the William H. Hannon Library. Eight LMU
professors are selected annually to discuss their latest publication or p
roject in a comfortable setting and format that welcomes diverse perspecti
ves for an inclusive conversation aimed to educate the entire community. A
ll Faculty Pub Nights are free and open to the public.\n\nAbout the Author
's Work\n\nWhat can a boxing ring entrance teach us about dignity\, dissen
t\, and the politics of labor? In "Rings of Dissent: Boxing and Performanc
es of Rebellion" (University of Illinois Press\, 2025)\, winner of the Nor
th American Society for Sports History 2025 Anthology Award\, professor Ru
dy Mondragón and co-editors Gaye Theresa Johnson and David J. Leonard ref
rame boxing as a site of cultural production where fighters challenge domi
nant ideologies through music\, fashion\, and expressive culture.\n\nThere
’s an urgent need for this perspective in today’s sporting and politic
al landscape. Professional boxing operates without a national governing bo
dy\, leaving fighters to navigate what insiders call the “Wild West” o
 f fragmented state regulations\, exploitative contracts\, and winner-take-
all economics. Of the 25\,000 professional boxers registered worldwide\, o
nly a handful earn living wages for high-risk work. In conditions like the
se\, fighters claim agency through what Mondragón calls “sporting entit
lements”—the curated ways athletes deploy expressive culture to disrup
t subordination and assert belonging.\n\nDrawing on seven years of ethnogr
aphic fieldwork and over 40 interviews with world champions and industry s
takeholders\, Mondragón’s work extends his broader scholarship\, includ
ing articles in "Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies\," "Journal of Spor
t History\," and "Kalfou\," alongside his public-facing commentary in the
 San Francisco Chronicle\, ESPN\, Zócalo Public Square\, and L.A. Taco. A
2024 SoCal Journalism Award finalist\, Mondragón is also at work on "On t
he Ropes" (under contract with University of Illinois Press)\, and his pol
icy work with the California State Athletic Commission positions his schol
arship to reach students\, athletes\, and anyone invested in how working-c
lass communities of color transform sites of exploitation into spaces of d
ignity.\n\nAbout the Author\n\nRudy Mondragón is an assistant professor i
n the Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies at LMU. He works mainly
at the intersection of ethnic studies and the sociology of sport\, with a
focus on how professional boxers assert dignity and resistance within an
exploitative industry. His scholarship advances two original concepts—th
e “brutal economy of boxing” and “sporting entitlements”—that ex
amine how fighters navigate underregulated labor conditions and deploy exp
ressive culture as a form of dissent. He is co-editor of "Rings of Dissent
: Boxing and Performances of Rebellion" (University of Illinois Press\, 20
25)\, winner of the North American Society for Sports History 2025 Antholo
gy Award\, and is at work on his monograph "On the Ropes: Performances of
Dignity and Resistance within the Brutal Economy of Boxing\," under contra
ct with the University of Illinois Press. From 2022 to 2024\, he was a UC
Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UCLA’s Institute for Research on L
abor and Employment\, where he co-authored a policy brief on labor struggl
es for professional boxers in California. His work has been recognized wit
h a 2024 SoCal Journalism Award nomination and grants from the UCLA Latino
Policy & Politics Institute and the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. H
e lives in Long Beach with his family.\n\nAbout the William H. Hannon Libr

DESCRIPTION:Featured in High Times: Pineapple Surprize Steps Into the Spot
 light\n \n \n \n \n We have some massive news to share
with the THC Design family! High Times editor and cannabis journalist Dav
id Downs just dropped his Strains of the Month for September 2026 (in his
famous Terp Sherpa column)\, and Pineapple Surprize officially made the cu

e for Pineapple Surprize after all the passion our cultivation team poured
into perfecting this strain makes it extra sweet. \n \n \n
 			\n What High Times Had to Say \n \n \n \n True
pineapple terpenes are notoriously hard to capture in cannabis\, often lea
ning too thin or grassy. In his review\, Downs noted how rare it is to fin
d legitimate\, vintage pineapple flavors done right\, praising the strain
’s ocimene-rich profile: “The team at THC Design… have pulled it off
with the debut of their Pineapple Surprize. …it’s real\, vintage pine
apple weed… full of the awesome terpene ocimene\, and one to grab if you
’re a sativa-lover longing for something more than Jack Herer. Smoke it
and do some yoga or hop on that Peloton.” — David Downs\, High Times
 							\n \n \n \n Meet Pineapple Surprize: Your Sun-Drenched
  State of Mind \n \n \n \n If you haven’t cracked op
en a jar of Pineapple Surprize yet\, consider this your official invitatio
 n. Crossed from classic Hawaiian Sativa × Skunk #1\, this sativa-dominant
flower is a sun-soaked escape in every bowl. The second you break open th
e seal\, you’re greeted with an unmistakable burst of bright tropical pi
neapple\, zesty citrus\, and a subtle layer of skunky earthiness. The Flav
or ProfileOn the inhale\, juicy notes of ripe mango and tangy citrus seaml
essly blend into a smooth herbal spice finish\, balanced by just a hint of
woody depth. Terpenes & EffectsDriven by a powerful terpene profile featu
 ring β-Myrcene\, β-Caryophyllene\, and α-Humulene\, Pineapple Surprize
delivers an immediate\, uplifting spark. The effects kick in fast—bringi
