DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Mission: Recognizing the Economic Power of Los Ange
 les County's Nonprofits \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
BLOG POST   By: Efrain Escobedo   For generations\, nonprofits
have been defined by the missions they serve: feeding families\, housing o
ur neighbors\, educating our youth\, protecting our environment\, and stre
ngthening our communities. These outcomes matter deeply and should remain
at the heart of how we understand the sector. But what if we’ve been tel
ling only half of the story? Last week\, the release of our new economic i
mpact analysis of Los Angeles County’s nonprofit sector challenged tradi
tional views of nonprofit impact. This analysis suggests that nonprofits a
re more than simple acts of charity. The data tells a powerful story: the
nonprofit sector is not adjacent to the economy. It is part of the economy
. In fact\, if the nonprofit sector were viewed as an industry\, it would
rank among the most significant contributors to Los Angeles County’s eco
nomic vitality. As noted in our report\, nonprofits account for 17% of cou
nty jobs and generate nearly $186 billion in economic output.   If any ot
her sector produced this level of employment and economic activity\, we wo
uld not describe it as charity. We would call it infrastructure. We would
call it an industry. We would build economic development strategies around
it.   The timing of this conversation could not be more important.   Ov
er the past six years\, nonprofits have been indispensable to Los Angeles
County’s ability to navigate crisis and uncertainty. From the COVID-19 p
andemic to wildfires and economic disruption\, nonprofits have consistentl
y served on the front lines\, ensuring that communities remain connected t
o care\, opportunity\, and hope. Yet at the same moment their importance h
as grown. Many nonprofits are facing mounting challenges including workfor
ce shortages\, declining revenues\, limited access to capital\, and increa
sing pressure on already stretched systems.   That is why this report is
more than a collection of statistics. It is an invitation to think differe
ntly about how we position and support the nonprofit sector.   For too lo
ng\, many nonprofits have communicated their value primarily through organ
izational purpose and mission. While that remains essential\, it is no lon
ger sufficient. Nonprofits should continue telling their unique stories\,
but they should also confidently describe themselves as employers\, purcha
sers\, economic contributors\, and community institutions.   This is what
I have come to call the sector’s “third bottom line.”   								\n
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n									  Nonprofits create ec
onomic value while also produce something equally important: trust\, care\
, inclusion\, resilience\, and a healthy civil society. They convert resou
rces into community well-being. They are the civic infrastructure that hel
ps make economic prosperity possible.   The implications are significant.
Government should move beyond simply viewing nonprofits as a convenien
t procurement expenditure and instead view them as an investment in social
infrastructure\, job creation\, and local economic activity. Philanthropy
should expand its investment strategy beyond funding individual organizat
ions and consider how to also strengthen the operating system of the secto
r itself. And nonprofit leaders should embrace a shared industry narrative
that reflects the sector’s collective economic and civic contribution.
At the Center for Nonprofit Management\, our vision is a nonprofit sect
or recognized as a cornerstone of a caring and inclusive Southern Californ
ia economy. Achieving that vision will require a new playbook and multisec
tor coalition that positions nonprofits not only as mission-driven organiz
ations\, but as a critical industry cluster that powers our region.   The
question before us is no longer whether nonprofits matter.   The questio
n is whether we are finally ready to recognize them for what they are: one
of the most important engines of economic and community prosperity fuelin
g a resilient triple bottom line of Los Angeles County economy.       D
ata collection and report was completed in partnership with Los Angeles Co
unty Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).Click here to access the ful
 l report.

i drivers navigate smell and shared air in the micro-lived-environment of
 a taxi cabin. \n\n\n\n\n“बाँस\, त्रास और साँ
 स ”: Smell\, Endurance\, and Breath in Mumbai Taxi Cabs. \nThis sessio
n reflects on how smell operates differently from other senses. While inte
rviewing taxi cab drivers in Mumbai to understand how smells interact with
in micro-environments\, one idea kept returning: to exist in a space is to
inhale it. In a taxi\, before any conversation begins between driver and
passenger\, there is already a sensory encounter through shared air. Unlik
 e sight\, touch\, taste\, or sound\, smell is difficult to avoid once we a
re exposed to it. One can close their eyes\, cover their ears\, or avoid t
ouching something\, but smell is tied directly to breathing. To exist in a
space is to inhale the shared air. \nInside a taxi cabin\, this shared ai
r carries a constant layering of smells. Drivers described how perfumes\,
 sweat\, food\, incense\, rain-soaked clothes\, tobacco\, city pollution\,
and car fresheners accumulate and overlap over the course of a day. Each p
assenger leaves behind a trace\, which blends with the next\, creating a s
hifting olfactory environment that the driver must continuously inhabit. A
nd how these smells are often signifiers of cultural and socio economic id
entity of a person. \nImage Credits: Yati Sharma

ikebana can be created anytime\, anywhere\, by anyone. \nThis philosophy m

\nThe Claremont Lewis Museum of Art exhibition Samella! Black as Lacquer a

DESCRIPTION:The USC Roski MA '27 Cohort in Curatorial Practices and the Pu
blic Sphere presents the very substance of ourselves. The exhibition trace
s the connective tissues that bridge our physical bodies and interiorities
with the constructed and natural landscapes that we inhabit. Grounded in
posthumanist philosopher Stacy Alaimo’s concept of transcorporeality\, t
he exhibition theorizes human bodies as deeply enmeshed in an active and l
ively world of matter\, rather than sole actors in an inert environment. T
he included artists explore many forms of transformation—from invasive t
o intangible—as they relate to physicality\, embodiment\, memory and ide
ntity across time and space. The very substance of ourselves invites viewe
rs to consider how the self is continually reshaped through contact with o
thers\, extending outward and merging with the world around us.\n\n \n\nFe

famous Terp Sherpa column)\, and Pineapple Surprize officially made the cu

with the debut of their Pineapple Surprize. …it’s real\, vintage pine
apple weed… full of the awesome terpene ocimene\, and one to grab if you
’re a sativa-lover longing for something more than Jack Herer. Smoke it
and do some yoga or hop on that Peloton.” — David Downs\, High Times

perience an engaging staged reading of Oliver Mayer’s new adaptation of
The Visions of Simone Machard\, a classic play co-written by Lion Feuchtw

is set in a dystopian Los Angeles shaped by oil production and constant s
urveillance. Performed by USC School of Dramatic Arts students and faculty

ess in the midst of political upheaval and the urge to resist against all
 odds. \n\nPost-Performance Conversation: \nFollowing the reading\, Oliver

DESCRIPTION:The USC Thornton School of Music's Beyond Category programming
continues with acclaimed saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader Kamasi W
ashington\, who will take part in a wide-ranging conversation and Q&A with
USC Thornton Dean Jason King about music\, imagination\, community\, and
the creative possibilities that emerge when artists move beyond the bounda
ries of category.\n\nFew contemporary artists embody that spirit as fully
as Washington. One of the most singular and influential musicians to emerg
e from Los Angeles in the 21st century\, he has developed an expansive mus
ical language that moves freely across jazz\, soul\, hip-hop\, classical m
usic\, and the spiritual and experimental traditions of Black music. From
his landmark album The Epic to Fearless Movement\, Washington has continua
lly challenged conventional ideas about genre and expanded the possibiliti
es of what jazz can be and whom it can reach.\n\nThe conversation will exp
lore the experiences and ideas that have shaped his musical language\, his
relationship to Los Angeles and its creative communities\, the role of co
llaboration in his artistic practice\, and what it means to follow one’s
imagination in a culture that continually asks artists to define themselv
 es by category.\n\n \n\nABOUT KAMASI WASHINGTON\n\nKamasi Washington is a
multi-instrumentalist\, composer and bandleader born and raised in Los Ang
eles. His four bodies of work to date — The Epic\; Harmony of Difference
\, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial\; Heaven an
d Earth\; and Fearless Movement — are among the most acclaimed of this c
entury. As Told to G/D Thyself\, his short film companion to Heaven and Ea
rth\, debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim. In
2020\, Washington scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming\, earnin
g Emmy and Grammy nominations for his work. That same year\, he co-founded
the supergroup Dinner Party with longtime friends and collaborators Terra
ce Martin\, Robert Glasper and 9th Wonder\; their EP Dinner Party (Dessert
) was later nominated for a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. Washing
ton has toured the world over and shared stages and collaborated with Kend
rick Lamar\, Florence + the Machine\, Herbie Hancock and many more. At the
2026 Grammy Awards\, Washington won multiple awards for his production an
d songwriting work on Kendrick Lamar's album GNX.\n\n--\nAdmission is free
and open to the public with an RSVP. All Thornton Signature Series Events
have a standby line for fully booked events. Seating is first-come\, firs
t-served. Please arrive early to claim your ticket and allow enough time f
or parking\, locating the venue\, and checking in. If you arrive less than
five minutes before the start time\, you will forfeit your spot to the wa
 itlist/standby line.
