SVP\n\nEASC Guest Speaker Series: Talk by Prof. Peng Xu (Associate Profess
or\, ShanghaiTech University) with Faculty Moderator Prof. Mengxiao Wang (
EALC 145: Introduction to Chinese Culture Art and Literature)\n\nPeng Xu
’s The Courtesan’s Memory\, Voice\, and Late Ming Drama (University of
Michigan Press\, 2025) reinterprets late Ming drama by foregrounding cour
tesan performance culture as a generative force in theatrical production.
Drawing on a wide range of sources—including scripts\, city guides\, bio
 graphies\, diaries\, letters\, and visual materials—the book argues that
courtesans were not merely subjects of representation but active agents w
ho reshaped theatrical form\, performance conditions\, and literary style.
In doing so\, it challenges male-centered historiography and offers a new
framework for understanding gender\, media\, and creativity in early mode
rn Chinese theater.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the USC East Asian Li

DESCRIPTION:Sophocles' Antigone comes alive in this new translation that w
ill be useful for both academic study and stage production. Diane Rayor's
accurate yet accessible translation reflects the play's inherent theatrica
lity. She provides an analytical introduction and comprehensive notes\, an
d the edition includes an essay by director Karen Libman.\n\nAntigone begi
ns after Oedipus and Jocasta's sons have killed each other in a battle ove
r the kingship. The new king\, Kreon\, decrees that the brother who attack
ed with a foreign army remain unburied and promises death to anyone who de
fies him. The play centers on Antigone's refusal to obey Kreon's law and K
reon's refusal to allow her brother's burial. Each acts on principle color
ed by gender\, personality\, and family history. Antigone poses a conflict
between passionate characters whose extreme stances leave no room for com

epitome (at the time) of the ideal woman: “a happy\, good and beautiful
homemaker.” Entered as Mrs. L.A.\, Dot\, sponsored by the local gas comp
any\, vies with the others in ironing a man's shirt\, sewing an apron from
  an original pattern\, setting a table\, preparing a meal and delivering a
monologue entitled “My Proudest Moment”—which\, for Dot\, was when
she saved an American naval force from submarine attack while serving as a
decoder in the WAVES during World War II. She is also abetted by her tart
-tongued friend Babs\, an electronics wizard who is not above tampering wi
th sewing machines and stoves as the contest comes down to the finals\, wi
th Mrs. Modesto\, Mrs. San Bernardino and Mrs. San Francisco going head-to
-head with Dot for the victory.\n\nUrged one way by the brassy Babs (who c
an't resist showing up the contest for the ridiculous farce it is) and ano
ther by the fatuous man from the gas company (who pleads with Dot to play
by the rules)\, Dot ultimately decides to do what she thinks is right rath
er than what she is told to do—the result\, of course\, being that the f
inal nod goes to the contestant who best fulfills the image ordained by th
e macho men who run the contest and the one who manages to blend a good he
lping of sex appeal with her compliance.

DESCRIPTION:Tea – Revisiting an American Classic features a staged readi
ng of Velina Hasu Houston’s play Tea\, which has been designated an Amer
ican theatre canon classic. A post-play panel featuring the producer of a
forthcoming film based upon the play\, the film’s director\, and the scr
eenwriter will follow. The play Tea was written in the early 1980s and has
enjoyed continuous production globally since its inception. An opera adap
ted from the play opens at Hawai’i Opera Theatre in 2027. At the end of
World War II\, nearly 50\,000 women left Japan in a mass exodus that dispe
rsed Japanese culture globally. Such a monumental departure never before h
ad occurred in Japan and has never happened since. For Japanese women\, it
was a time of cultural significance and personal renewal as they challeng
ed systems that historically had disadvantaged women. Upholding their agen
cy\, worth\, and equity\, the women emigrated to various countries\, inclu
ding the U.S. The play Tea focuses on five such women who landed in the Am
erican heartland in Kansas. \n\n \n\nRSVP
