DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Mission: Recognizing the Economic Power of Los Ange
 les County's Nonprofits \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
BLOG POST   By: Efrain Escobedo   For generations\, nonprofits
have been defined by the missions they serve: feeding families\, housing o
ur neighbors\, educating our youth\, protecting our environment\, and stre
ngthening our communities. These outcomes matter deeply and should remain
at the heart of how we understand the sector. But what if we’ve been tel
ling only half of the story? Last week\, the release of our new economic i
mpact analysis of Los Angeles County’s nonprofit sector challenged tradi
tional views of nonprofit impact. This analysis suggests that nonprofits a
re more than simple acts of charity. The data tells a powerful story: the
nonprofit sector is not adjacent to the economy. It is part of the economy
. In fact\, if the nonprofit sector were viewed as an industry\, it would
rank among the most significant contributors to Los Angeles County’s eco
nomic vitality. As noted in our report\, nonprofits account for 17% of cou
nty jobs and generate nearly $186 billion in economic output.   If any ot
her sector produced this level of employment and economic activity\, we wo
uld not describe it as charity. We would call it infrastructure. We would
call it an industry. We would build economic development strategies around
it.   The timing of this conversation could not be more important.   Ov
er the past six years\, nonprofits have been indispensable to Los Angeles
County’s ability to navigate crisis and uncertainty. From the COVID-19 p
andemic to wildfires and economic disruption\, nonprofits have consistentl
y served on the front lines\, ensuring that communities remain connected t
o care\, opportunity\, and hope. Yet at the same moment their importance h
as grown. Many nonprofits are facing mounting challenges including workfor
ce shortages\, declining revenues\, limited access to capital\, and increa
sing pressure on already stretched systems.   That is why this report is
more than a collection of statistics. It is an invitation to think differe
ntly about how we position and support the nonprofit sector.   For too lo
ng\, many nonprofits have communicated their value primarily through organ
izational purpose and mission. While that remains essential\, it is no lon
ger sufficient. Nonprofits should continue telling their unique stories\,
but they should also confidently describe themselves as employers\, purcha
sers\, economic contributors\, and community institutions.   This is what
I have come to call the sector’s “third bottom line.”   								\n
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n									  Nonprofits create ec
onomic value while also produce something equally important: trust\, care\
, inclusion\, resilience\, and a healthy civil society. They convert resou
rces into community well-being. They are the civic infrastructure that hel
ps make economic prosperity possible.   The implications are significant.
Government should move beyond simply viewing nonprofits as a convenien
t procurement expenditure and instead view them as an investment in social
infrastructure\, job creation\, and local economic activity. Philanthropy
should expand its investment strategy beyond funding individual organizat
ions and consider how to also strengthen the operating system of the secto
r itself. And nonprofit leaders should embrace a shared industry narrative
that reflects the sector’s collective economic and civic contribution.
At the Center for Nonprofit Management\, our vision is a nonprofit sect
or recognized as a cornerstone of a caring and inclusive Southern Californ
ia economy. Achieving that vision will require a new playbook and multisec
tor coalition that positions nonprofits not only as mission-driven organiz
ations\, but as a critical industry cluster that powers our region.   The
question before us is no longer whether nonprofits matter.   The questio
n is whether we are finally ready to recognize them for what they are: one
of the most important engines of economic and community prosperity fuelin
g a resilient triple bottom line of Los Angeles County economy.       D
ata collection and report was completed in partnership with Los Angeles Co
unty Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).Click here to access the ful
 l report.

DESCRIPTION:Elad Zelingher\, USC \n\n\nTitle: Spherical special functions
and symmetric polynomials\n\n\nAbstract: In the representation theory of p
-adic groups\, an important class of representations are the spherical one
 s. These are representations that admit a spherical vector\, that is\, a n
on-zero vector that is invariant under a maximal compact open subgroup. It
is known that for an irreducible spherical representation\, its spherical
vector is unique up to a scalar. Using this uniqueness\, one can attach t
o the irreducible representation in question interesting functions. It is
then desirable to find explicit formulas for these functions\, which often
turn out to essentially be some explicit symmetric polynomials in the rep
resentation data. In this talk I will give some classical examples of this
phenomenon and talk about some new cases\, some of which are still in pro
gress. A crash course on p-adic numbers basics will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:Ross Akhmechet\, USC\n\n\nTitle: Lattice homology and q-series
invariants of 3-manifolds\n\n\nAbstract: I will discuss an invariant of n
egative definite plumbed 3-manifolds that unifies and extends two theories
with quite different origins. The first is lattice (co)homology\, due to
Némethi\, whose degree zero part is encoded by a certain graph and is iso
morphic to Heegaard Floer homology for a large subclass of such 3-manifold
 s. The second theory is the Z-hat q-series of Gukov-Pei-Putrov-Vafa\, a po
wer series which recovers Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev quantum invariants at
roots of unity. I will explain lattice homology\, Z-hat\, and our unificat
ion of them in joint work with Peter Johnson and Slava Krushkal. I will al
so discuss work with Peter Johnson and Sunghyuk Park on extending the cons
truction to knot complements and a surgery formula relating the two. Time
permitting\, I will mention ongoing work with Krushkal.

DESCRIPTION:Sikh Bhakti: Music\, Memory\, and Embodied Practices\n\nMusic
is central to Sikh devotional practice. Sikh scripture contains the music
and poetry of medieval bhaktī sants and is organized by rāga melody. The
text is revered as the “Living Guru” and the center of Sikh worship.
Sikhs around the world recite\, perform\, and sing the sacred poems as a p
ractice of communal remembering\, spiritual gnosis\, and divine union. Yet
memory of what Sikh musical traditions were like before British colonizat
ion has gone nearly extinct. Before colonization\, Sikhs embraced diverse
streams of spirituality and music. But the rupture of colonization and wha
 t followed – Punjab’s partition\, nationalist identity politics\, and
the neo-liberal marketplace\, caused Sikh leaders to draw rigid boundaries
around their identity and their music.\n\nThe loss of performative and mu
sical memory spurred a critical renaissance beginning in the late 1980s to
recover and revive the remnants of Sikh knowledge contained in the musica
l heritage. Today Sikhs are reclaiming wisdom and memory to chart a new fu
ture for the community and offering their spiritual wisdom to a world in c
risis.\nThis talk argues that Sikh wisdom cannot be constrained by (post)c
olonial logics of conformity and closure. As a living stream of knowledge
of embodied pedagogy and praxis (jog or yoga)\, it resists hegemonic and h
omogenous notions of authority and authenticity altogether\, allowing for
diverse future creations.\nBio:\nNirinjan Kaur Khalsa-Baker is Professor o
f Teaching in Theological Studies and Yoga Studies at LMU where she teache
s classes on Sikh\, Jain\, and Yoga Studies. She is a Sikh musician and sc
holar who uses a decolonial and feminist lens to explore diversity\, belon
ging\, and power in religious communities\, pedagogies\, and practices. In
2024 she traveled the country on the Revolutionary Love Tour sharing Sikh
songs and stories of love and courage to nourish and strengthen communiti
 es during these divisive times.\n\n@DrNinjaKaur

DESCRIPTION:Omer Tamuz\, Caltech\n\n\nTitle: A fixed-point theorem for fac
 e maps\, or deletion-tolerant random finite sets\n\n\nAbstract: Is there a
way to choose a finite subset of the integers so that it’s approximatel
y impossible to tell if the lowest one was removed? Or if the second or th
ird lowest was removed? We show that such probability\nmeasures exist\, by
showing that there exists a finitely additive probability measure that is
exactly invariant to these deletions. This problem is related to some int
eresting open questions\, including the amenability of Thompson’s group
 F. (with Tom Hutchcroft and Nicholas Monod)
