DESCRIPTION:Water has long shaped life in Japan. As an island nation surro
unded by the sea and nourished by abundant rainfall\, Japan depends on wat
er for its fertile landscapes and rich food sources. \nIn contemporary Jap
anese art\, water continues to be a powerful theme.  \nSound of Water: Fe
minine Expressions of Fluidity features paintings\, prints\, and sculpture
s by six Japanese women artists: Emiko Aida\, Miya Ando\, Yumiko Glover\,
Mineko Grimmer\, Yuko Kimura\, and Ayomi Yoshida. \nTheir works explore w
ater’s many moods and manifestations —serene and soft\, yet also power
ful and unpredictable—inviting us to consider our own relationship with
this essential element as we face climatic extremes throughout the world.
\nThe exhibition celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Japanese Garden at
Descanso Gardens and is curated by Japanese art historian Meher McArthur.
\nThe exhibition is open at the Sturt Haaga Gallery from June 20\, 2026
 –January 3\, 20276\, 10am–4pm daily. \nView the catalog \nEntry to the
Sturt Haaga Gallery is included in the price of admission or membership.

 he artist.\n\nSpecial Programs \nThursday\, August 27\, 10–11:30am — J

uidity and its programs are generously funded\, in part\, by Perenchio F

DESCRIPTION:Curated by Rosten Woo\, LA’s Garden explores the hidden stor
ies rooted in the beauty of Descanso Gardens. \nWhile our 150 acres offer
 a natural escape\, they also hold a deep\, living history. \nDiscover who
shaped our collections and landscapes\, why they look the way they do\, an
d how they continue to change. The exhibition brings history to life by pa
iring archival maps\, documents\, and vintage photographs with contemporar
y artistic perspectives. \nAt Descanso\, the history of the plants is the
history of the people. From the ancient stewardship of indigenous communit
ies to the legacies of Japanese-American nurserymen and visionary voluntee
rs\, every plant tells a story of human passion and resilience. \nThe exhi

DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the Levan Institute for the Humanities'
“On Writing” series\, conversations aiming to answer questions about h
ow writing matters\, now. This conversation will feature Nik De Dominic (U
SC) and Jonathan Leal (USC)\, hosted by Sarah Mesle (USC). Organized in pa
rtnership with the Consortium for Gender\, Sexuality\, Race and Public Cul
ture. Registration is required. REGISTER\n\n \n\nDescription: What counts
as a writer’s “voice”? Voice is one of the slipperiest concepts in w
riting. We all know it matters — it shapes how it feels to read\, as wel
l as how it feels to write — but it’s hard to harness\, hard to descri
be\, and definitely hard to teach. Is voice a personal inner quality that
 a person has — or that a person finds\, somehow\, within herself? What i
f “our” voice is social\, or collective — a manifestation of the art
we encounter and the communities we inhabit? This “On Writing” event
will sort through our theories\, practices\, and histories of coming into
voice. \n\n \n\nNik De Dominic is Professor (Teaching) and Director of the
Writing Program at the University of Southern California. He is the autho
r of Goodbye Wolf (The Operating System\, 2020) and Your Daily Horoscope (
New Michigan Press\, 2015). Writing has appeared in Guernica\, Los Angeles
Review\, DIAGRAM\, The Conversation\, and elsewhere. He is a founding edi
tor of The Offending Adam and Poetry Editor of New Orleans Review. De Domi
nic co-founded and co-directs the USC Dornsife Prison Education Project\,
which develops educational opportunities for incarcerated and systems-impa
cted people. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from the Univers
ity of Alabama\, where he was an Alabama Prison Arts + Education Fellow\,
and a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California. \n
\nJonathan Leal is Associate Professor of English and Affiliated Faculty i
n the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. B
orn and raised in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas\, Leal’s transdis
ciplinary work spans books\, editorial projects\, albums\, and interdiscip
linary arts initiatives exploring cultural geography\, creative resistance
\, and conceptual possibility. His books include Wild Tongue: A Borderland
s Mixtape (Duke UP 2026)\, Dreams in Double Time: On Race\, Freedom\, and
 Bebop (Duke UP 2023)\, and a co-edited volume\, Cybermedia: Explorations i
n Science\, Sound\, and Vision (Bloomsbury 2021). Also an independent musi
c producer and award-winning drummer\, his recent musical collaborations h
ave included releases featured in Pitchfork\, Latino USA\, Democracy Now\,
and elsewhere. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Natio
nal Book Critics Circle\, where he is Co-Chair of Criticism. \n\n \n\nOpen

DESCRIPTION:Elad Zelingher\, USC \n\n\nTitle: Spherical special functions
and symmetric polynomials\n\n\nAbstract: In the representation theory of p
-adic groups\, an important class of representations are the spherical one
 s. These are representations that admit a spherical vector\, that is\, a n
on-zero vector that is invariant under a maximal compact open subgroup. It
is known that for an irreducible spherical representation\, its spherical
vector is unique up to a scalar. Using this uniqueness\, one can attach t
o the irreducible representation in question interesting functions. It is
then desirable to find explicit formulas for these functions\, which often
turn out to essentially be some explicit symmetric polynomials in the rep
resentation data. In this talk I will give some classical examples of this
phenomenon and talk about some new cases\, some of which are still in pro
gress. A crash course on p-adic numbers basics will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:Ross Akhmechet\, USC\n\n\nTitle: Lattice homology and q-series
invariants of 3-manifolds\n\n\nAbstract: I will discuss an invariant of n
egative definite plumbed 3-manifolds that unifies and extends two theories
with quite different origins. The first is lattice (co)homology\, due to
Némethi\, whose degree zero part is encoded by a certain graph and is iso
morphic to Heegaard Floer homology for a large subclass of such 3-manifold
 s. The second theory is the Z-hat q-series of Gukov-Pei-Putrov-Vafa\, a po
wer series which recovers Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev quantum invariants at
roots of unity. I will explain lattice homology\, Z-hat\, and our unificat
ion of them in joint work with Peter Johnson and Slava Krushkal. I will al
so discuss work with Peter Johnson and Sunghyuk Park on extending the cons
truction to knot complements and a surgery formula relating the two. Time
permitting\, I will mention ongoing work with Krushkal.

DESCRIPTION:Framework Haus returns to the LINE LA\, and this time\, they
’re taking it to the rooftop. \nThe team behind Seoul’s acclaimed Alic
 e Cheongdam bar\, ranked No. 13 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars\, made their Los
Angeles debut at Breakroom 86 earlier this year to a sold-out crowd. Now\,
they’re back for two nights at Openaire. \nWith 75 tickets available pe
r night and approximately 200 cocktails on offer each evening\, this is a
deliberately small and fleeting experience. Drinks are served on a first c
ome\, first serve basis until sold out\, so arriving early is encouraged.
\nGuests can expect inventive\, thoughtfully crafted cocktails\, served un
der the open sky in the heart of Koreatown. Two nights only. \nWhen: Sept.
  21 & 22\, 6-11 PM.\nLocation: Openaire at the LINE LA\nTickets: $25 per p
