DESCRIPTION:Join the International Business and Economics Association for
the first member meeting of the semester! Come and let us get to know you
as we open up the semester with our first meeting and guest speaker Dr. Ti
monthy Bond\, Professor of Economics at Purdue University. Dr. Bond achiev
ed his B.S. Quantitative Economics from Miami University\, M.A. in Politic
al Economy and P.h.D in Economics from Boston University. Dr. Bond will be
speaking about his research regarding the economics of fertility. Free fo
od and drinks will be provided! \n \nAbstract of Dr. Bond's topic:\nFert
ility levels across the United States and the rest of the world have plumm
eted below replacement levels over the past 25 years. Direct economic fact
ors have only limited explanatory power. We propose decreases in prices an
d increases of quality of experiential goods\, which are plausibly degrade
d by children\, are responsible. We first show theoretically that whether
a price or quality shock to a given good is pro-natal or anti-natal can be
predicted by differences in consumption patterns between parents and non-
parents.  Based on spending data\, this suggests price decreases or quali
ty improvements in travel and dining out should be anti-natal. We show tha
t populations who had pre-existing larger gaps in spending between parents
and non-parents on travel and dining out saw larger decreases in fertilit
y between 2007-2019. Further\, fertility declined faster among cities with
the most internationally connected airports. \n\nHosted by: Graduate Stu
dents Economics Club (GSEC)\, International Business and Economics Associa
tion\n\nAdditional Information can be found at: https://crimsonconnection.
