DESCRIPTION:Finding Strength Through Physical Therapy \n \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 \n \n \n \n September 14\, 2026 \n \n \n
 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n On a recent trip out west with
her husband\, Beverly Miller did something she hadn’t expected: she com
pleted two hikes she had never done before. One included a particularly ch
allenging stretch of trail. The next morning\, Beverly got up feeling good
\, did the stretches and resistance-band exercises she had learned in phys
ical therapy\, and was ready for another day. For Beverly\, it was a meani
ngful change after years of stiffness and pain that had increasingly affec
 ted her daily life. \n \n \n \n \n \n “Befor
 e therapy I traveled\, but I was often miserable\,” Beverly says. “Som
 etimes I was so stiff\, I would just cry\, lie on a heating pad\, and go t
 o bed.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 \n \n \n \n Her symptoms became more difficult after a c
ar accident in 2022 left her with significant neck and nerve pain. Althoug
h physical therapy had been recommended\, Beverly was hesitant. Eventually
\, encouragement from her LRH primary care physician\, Dr. Thomas Clem\, c
onvinced her to give it another try. She chose Lakeland Regional Health Ph
ysical Therapy at the YMCA\, close to her North Lakeland home. Beverly pri
marily worked with physical therapists Gwyn Arnold\, DPT\, and Alex Barlow
\, PTA. During her visits\, she was struck by how closely they listened\,
observed her movement\, and adjusted each session based on what she was ex
 periencing. \n \n \n \n \n \n “If I came in
 and said\, ‘I’m hurting here today\,’ they would say\, ‘That’s w
hat we’re going to work on today\,’” Beverly says. “They made me f
eel for the first time that I can change. I can control my body and make i
 t better.” \n \n \n \n \n \n “Beverly cam
e in ready to work and really committed herself to the process\,” Gwyn s
ays. “As she progressed\, we continued building on what she could do and
helping her develop the strength and confidence to stay active and help h
er reach her personal goal to travel. For Beverly\, the education piece wa
s crucial in helping her get into the right mindset for therapy.” “We
did our best to be responsive with her treatments. We scaled it back when
she was in pain\, we progressed when she felt strong\, and our team kept i
n close communication\,” says Alex. That individualized approach is cent
ral to physical therapy at Lakeland Regional Health. “During the initial
evaluation\, we spend time learning what is important to the patient\, wh
ere they are having difficulty and what they want to be able to do\,” Aa
ryn Mariacher\, Regional Manager\, LRH Outpatient Rehab Services\, says.
“For Beverly\, being able to travel comfortably with her husband was imp
ortant. We build the plan around what matters to each patient.” North La
keland YMCA Team Supervisor Manuel Pizarro explains why movement can be di
fficult when patients are experiencing nerve irritation. \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n “When patients are dealing w
ith nerve irritation\, the body can signal an alarm and begin guarding mov
ement\,” Manuel says. “We start by helping them gradually restore comf
ortable movement with less irritation and pain. From there\, we can begin
adding resistance and building strength to target specific activities that
are meaningful to the patient and their goals.” \n \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
 \n \n \n \n Over time\, Beverly began noticing a signific
ant difference. The nerve pain in her neck that had once been a regular pa
rt of her life became increasingly rare. Beverly also changed the way she
responded when she felt stiff or uncomfortable. Before physical therapy\,
pain made her want to move less. Through therapy\, she learned how regular
movement\, stretching\, and strengthening could help her manage her sympt
oms. Beverly and her husband now bring resistance bands along on their tri
ps and exercise together. She continues the stretches and strengthening ex
ercises she learned in therapy and has even added weights to her routine.
“We now exercise more than we ever did\,” she says. “If I do what th
ey tell me to do\, and walk and move\, the pain is gone.” But Beverly sa
ys her experience was about more than the physical progress she made. She
remembers the kindness of the entire team and how they encouraged patients
  throughout the clinic. \n \n \n \n \n \n “I
was amazed at their kindness\,” Beverly says. “Even if someone could
only do five steps\, they praised them. I felt like I knew them my whole l
 ife. I trusted them.” \n \n \n \n \n \n Tod
 ay\, Beverly is traveling\, hiking\, and approaching movement with a new s
ense of confidence. “They changed my whole view on physical therapy\,”
  she says. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \

fficult when patients are experiencing nerve irritation.

DESCRIPTION:We have combined the Workshop with the Board meeting so reside
nts have one meeting to attend. We feel this will aid in the continued com
munity involvement during meetings\, enable anyone to speak about issues b
efore they are being voted on and make a difference in community decisions
. Come out and join us for the meeting! \nThe Agenda is posted on the Club
House bulletin board each month.  Please check your monthly newsletters
for the dates of future meetings. \nAs we go through the agenda\, members
can ask questions and discussion is encouraged. \nAny topic not on the age
nda can be bought to meeting attendees after the meeting agenda is complet
ed. \nAs Members address the attendees they must keep their time to a maxi
mum of 3 minutes as stated in our Roberts Rule of Order.  This keeps the
meeting flowing and allows time for everyone to speak on the issues. \nMee
tings will be in the Ballroom unless the Ballroom is reserved for another
event\, in which case the meeting will be in the Board Room.
