DESCRIPTION:Seeing is not a neutral act. Our understanding of the visual w
orld is shaped by our experiences\, cultural conditioning\, and surroundin
g environment. Meaning does not reside solely within an object\; it arises
from a participatory\, constructed process. As the author Anaïs Nin remi
nds us\, “We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.”
\nEye of the Beholder approaches perception from this point of view\, esp
ecially as it relates to received notions of femininity. In this exhibitio
n\, artworks that depict readable characteristics of the feminine are plac
ed in conversation with abstract pieces that only allude to femininity’s
essential qualities. The materiality of a Donna Sharrett textile\, the pa
lette of a Helen Frankenthaler print\, and the imagery of a Michael Eastma
n photograph can each become allegories of femininity. When these works ar
e placed in dialogue\, the subsequent comparisons invite us to question wh
ether the very suggestion of the feminine alters how we interpret what we
 see next. \nIn Eye of the Beholder\, the installation\, itself\, becomes p
art of this inquiry. In one gallery\, a dense\, salon-style arrangement in
vites a layered reading through close spatial relationships. In the other
room\, a more traditional presentation offers space and visual separation\
, encouraging each work to stand on its own. Moving between these two envi
ronments\, viewers may notice how associations carry over\, linger\, or di
ssolve. We are invited to participate in this process\, to question our ow
n habits of perception\, and to consider how suggestion and context shape
what is seen. \nUltimately\, this exhibition asks us to consider how we co
me to recognize and imagine femininity\, not only in what is depicted\, bu
t in what is implied. What appears to be “feminine” may not reside in
the object at all\, but in the expectations we bring to it. In the end\, t
he key to the exhibition is not on the walls\, it is in the eye of the beh
older. \nQuestions \n\nWhat three words describe femininity to you?\nWhat
artwork in the exhibit speaks to femininity the most in your opinion? Why?
\n\nQuote \n“We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.

DESCRIPTION:Drawn from the collection of the Daum Museum of Contemporary A
rt\, Under Pressure considers abstraction as a site of tension between ord
er and disruption. Rather than offering escape\, abstraction here operates
as a point of collision\, where systems intended to stabilize and contain
begin to reveal their own instability. \nAcross the works presented\, a s
ense of underlying tension becomes visible. Control and vulnerability coex
ist in a state of friction\, producing a persistent and unresolved unease.
The exhibition does not seek to resolve these conditions\, but to foregro
und them. \nFormal structures such as grids and repeated systems are subje
cted to pressure. They loosen\, fragment\, or give way to gesture. Surface
s accumulate and thicken\, resisting restraint and asserting material pres
ence. In this context\, structures associated with clarity\, protection\,
or definition appear increasingly fragile and provisional. \nAbstraction e
merges as a charged field in which instinct and control intersect. Systems
falter\, and moments of excess or disruption come to the fore. What is re
vealed is not collapse\, but a sustained state of instability in which ord
er persists without ever fully securing itself. \nUnder Pressure was curat

DESCRIPTION:The American West occupies a complex place in the cultural ima
 gination\, shaped by frontier narratives\, industry\, migration\, land use
\, resilience\, and mythmaking. Contemporary Visions of the West brings to
gether artists from across the United States whose work reclaims and reima
gines Western identities and landscapes beyond nostalgia and stereotype.\n
\nThrough a contemporary lens\, the exhibition explores how ideas of the W
est intersect with questions of place\, labor\, environment\, power\, belo
nging\, and lived experience. Selected through a national juried process\,
the works on view invite visitors to consider the evolving realities of t

DESCRIPTION:Presented at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art\, Cross-Poll
ination brings together works from the museum’s permanent collection wi
th significant loans by invited contemporary artists to explore the interc
onnected relationships that shape the natural world. Across generations\,
media\, and artistic perspectives\, the exhibition considers nature not as
a static subject\, but as a dynamic network of exchange in which every en
counter has the potential to transform what follows. \nThe phenomenon of c
ross-pollination offers both a biological process and a curatorial framewo
rk. As butterflies\, bees\, birds\, and wind carry pollen between plants\,
they sustain biodiversity through movement and connection. Likewise\, the
works assembled in this exhibition generate new meaning through proximity
. Historical works from the Daum Museum’s collection enter into conversa
tion with contemporary practices\, creating moments of resonance that exte
nd beyond chronology and reveal the collection as an evolving body of idea
 s. \nWorking across painting\, photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, and in
stallation\, the artists engage recurring themes of growth\, migration\, a
daptation\, fragility\, and resilience. Plants and pollinators appear thro
ughout the exhibition as enduring symbols of interdependence\, reminding u
s that life flourishes through relationships rather than isolation. These
ecological systems become a lens through which to consider artistic influe
nce\, cultural memory\, and the continual exchange between past and presen
 t. \nCross-Pollination invites visitors to experience the museum as an eco
system where works of art\, like living organisms\, exist within a web of
connections that expands with every new encounter. The temporary presence
of invited artists does not stand apart from the permanent collection\, bu
t activates it\, allowing ideas to circulate across time and media. Togeth
er\, these works reflect the vitality of nature itself\, demonstrating tha
t renewal emerges through diversity\, dialogue\, and the continual movemen
 t of ideas.

DESCRIPTION:The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art presents Bede Clarke: King
 ’s Highway\, on view September 18\, 2026\, through February 28\, 2027. B
ringing together ceramics and works on paper\, the exhibition examines Cla
rke’s enduring exploration of the vessel\, drawing\, and the expressive
potential of the handmade mark. \nFor more than four decades\, Clarke has
investigated the relationship between form\, surface\, and touch. While th
e vessel remains central to his practice\, his work extends beyond traditi
onal ceramics through an ongoing dialogue with drawing\, color\, and gestu
re. The resulting works record both the physical act of making and the qui
et rhythms that shape the creative process. \nClarke describes his practic
e as one guided by touch and by an intuitive response to both material and
process: “I think I have always cast a pretty wide net in terms of my e
xploration of clay. Pots and the vessel have held the center but there has
been a strong overlay of interest in drawing\, color and leaving a trace
of the hand. I navigate both the clay and drawing with an emphasis on ‘t
ouch’ and a felt response to the materials and to my own inner rhythms a
nd sensibilities. I am guided by a dialogue with the work and find myself
in agreement when it speaks in a voice that has commitment and conviction\
, but also the allure of mystery and enigma. I am always most pleased when
the work strikes a balance between wildness and restraint. Through all th
is work I am most interested in distinguishing the record\, the moment of
the hand touching clay\, and the actual quality of feeling surrounding the
work.” \nThe exhibition highlights Clarke’s sustained interest in bal
ancing spontaneity with restraint\, allowing each object to embody both th
e evidence of its making and a sense of quiet contemplation. Through layer
 ed surfaces\, expressive line\, and carefully considered form\, King’s H
ighway invites viewers to consider clay as both a material and a record of
human experience. \nBede Clarke is Professor Emeritus at the University o
f Missouri-Columbia\, where he taught ceramics from 1992 to 2021. He recei
ved an MFA from the University of Iowa and a BFA from Eckerd College. His
work is represented in museum collections throughout the United States and
internationally\, including the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Tai
pei County Yingge Ceramics Museum\, the Icheon World Ceramic Center\, the
South Bend Museum of Art\, the Martin Museum of Art\, and the Nora Eccles
Harrison Museum of Art. Clarke lives and works in Columbia\, Missouri.

DESCRIPTION:Big change rarely happens because of one person or one organiz
ation. It happens when people unite around a common objective\, build rela
tionships\, recognize opportunities\, and transform innovative ideas into
tangible actions. The ethos of KC 360 subcommittees is that we are stronge
r together. Subcommittees give KC 360 participants a place to move beyond
conversation and get to work. They gather individuals with diverse experie
nces\, expertise\, and viewpoints to tackle specific challenges and opport
unities\, crafting practical solutions that enhance Kansas City neighborho
 ods. \n \n \n \n \n \n
 	\n \n What Are KC 360 Subcommittees?We have established four s
 ubcommittees focused on community safety\, opportunity\, and well-being. T
he action that Kansas City needs cannot be achieved through our weekly one
-hour KC 360 meetings alone. Subcommittees allow us to concentrate efforts
on specific areas where collaboration can make a real difference. Partici
pants identify needs\, exchange ideas\, form partnerships\, set priorities
\, and create action plans. This structure transforms ideas into actionabl
e steps. In 2025\, 596 individuals representing 296 organizations have att
ended a KC 360\, and 106 individuals have been involved in our subcommitte
es. An additional 473 individuals have attended workshops hosted by KC 360
subcommittees. These included two Criminal Justice 101 workshops\, a trau
ma response training\, Business 360 Marketing Workshop\, and multiple Lunc
h and Learns. Currently\, KC 360 features subcommittees dedicated to: Comm
 unity-Police RelationsYouth EmpowermentCommunity Care 360Business 360Each
subcommittee has distinct focuses and objectives\, yet they share a common
belief: thatstronger communities are built through partnership\, trust\,
and collective action. Why Subcommittees MatterCommunity challenges are co
mplex. Issues such as public safety\, youth well-being\, economic opportun
ity\, relationships with the justice system\, and community healing are in
terconnected\, and no single organization or sector can address them alone
. Subcommittees foster a collaborative environment where community members
 \, organizations\, businesses\, faith leaders\, educators\, public systems
\, and concerned citizens work together\, ensuring that those closest to t
he challenges are involved in finding solutions. Moreover\, subcommittees
promote accountability. A promising idea gains strength when there are ind
ividuals willing to ask: What are the next steps? Who else should be invol
ved? What actions can we take? Who has done this before? How will we measu
re success? From Ideas to ActionThe work within a subcommittee often start
 s with a conversation. A participant might highlight a challenge\, another
brings a different viewpoint\, a partner shares resources\, and the group
identifies a gap\, prompting them to consider possible actions. From thes
e discussions\, ideas evolve into specific goals and action steps connecte
 d to partnerships and resources. \n \n \n \n
 																	\n \n \n \n For instance\, the Youth Emp
owerment Subcommittee aims to link families with resources that help youth
thrive safely and empower them to prevent and interrupt violence. Its mem
bers address pathways to violence by: Enhancing community understanding of
the justice system and improving navigationof its complexities.Investigat
ing barriers to program participation and school attendance.Emphasizing co
 nflict resolution and de-escalation strategies.Establishing a Youth 360 Bo
ard of Advisors for youth aged 13-18 to provide insights on how to better
support young people and their families. The Community-Police Relations Sub
committee utilizes a multi-tiered engagement model to encourage collaborat
ion between KCPD and community partners\, which includes: Participation du
ring KC 360 meetingsShifts in mindset\, knowledge\, and communicationActio
n items such as:Community presenceConflict resolutionCultural competencyTr
ust-building initiativesRestorative justice trainingEducation on the crimi
nal justice systemThe Community Care 360 Subcommittee focuses on fostering
a safe and harmonious community where neighbors empower one another to le
ad meaningful lives. Their initiatives include spiritual-based grief suppo
rt\, providing faith leaders with resources to better serve their congrega
tions\, and ensuring a visible faith presence in local neighborhoods.
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
Business 360 showcases how the business community can actively en
gage in public safety and neighborhood opportunities. Its mission involves
collaborating with businesses to enhance public safety\, expand workforce
opportunities\, and support thriving neighborhoods across Kansas City. Th
e action plan outlines clear goals for broadening the business network\, e
ducating businesses about shared responsibility for public safety\, activa
ting them in workforce and youth engagement\, and promoting neighborhood e
 conomic development. \n \n \n \n
 					\n \n \n \n Everyone Has Something to ContributeSubc
ommittees are structured around the concept of partnership because collabo
rative work is essential to build stronger relationships throughout Kansas
City. You don’t have to be an expert to get involved. Whether you have
 a professional skill\, a neighborhood connection\, an idea\, personal expe
rience\, or simply a willingness to listen and assist\, your input is valu
able. How to Get InvolvedIf you care about the future of Kansas City\, the
re’s a place for you at the table. Start by identifying the issue that r
esonates most with you: Interested in strengthening relationships between
communities and law enforcement? Explore our Community-Police Relations Su
bcommitteeWant to help young people and families thrive? Check out our You
th Empowerment Subcommittee.Interested in assisting in healing\, faith com
munities\, and neighbors affected by violence? Look into Community Care 36

od investment? Consider Business 360.You can also start by attending a KC
360 meeting to connect with other participants and discover where your exp
eriences and interests can make the most significant impact. Your Idea Cou
ld Be the Next ActionEvery action plan has to start somewhere. It might be
 gin with a question\, a concern from a neighbor\, a connection between two
organizations\, or a belief to create positive change. Subcommittees offe
r the framework needed to transform that initial thought into a collaborat
ive project. Moving the needle forward isn’t always easy. You need to be
willing to be persistent through barriers\, and pivots\, momentum loss\,
and needing to start over\, but you’ll get to work alongside a group of
people who are just as hopeful as you are. If you have an idea\, a skill\,
a connection\, or simply a passion for helping to create safer\, stronger
\, and more connected neighborhoods\, we welcome you to join us. Bring you
r voice. Bring your ideas. Bring your eagerness to act\, and together\, we
can turn ideas into actions and those actions into a lasting impact on ou
r community. To learn more\, reach out to our KC 360 Coordinator\, Julia K
esarwani\, at julia@kccommongood.org and see our Community Calendar for su
