DESCRIPTION:Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript
Collections commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Declaratio
n of Independence (1776–2026) with an exhibition of rare books\, letters
\, and documents on the life of George Washington.\n\nThese highlights of
the collection reflect the interests of Cornell’s first president\, Andr
ew Dickson White\, who had a fascination with both American history and bo
ok collecting. The acquisition of rare materials relating to Washington an
d his era formed an integral part of White’s educational vision. Despite
subsequent transformations in the discipline\, White’s principle remain
s resonant: collecting\, displaying\, and teaching with rare books\, autog
raphs\, signatures\, and portraits make history tangible and alive.

DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of post-independence nation-building\, es
pecially during the New Order regime\, Indonesia has consistently assimila
ted the ocean to a land-based perspective\, and one moreover that focuses
-- under the rubric of ‘landscape’-- on its more solid\, extractive\,
and materially driven formations. But this was not always the case. What h
appens if we regard the land from the point of view of the sea?\n\nNyegara
-Gunung is a divine “marriage” of two powerful natural elements\, inex
tricably tied to one another. Whatever occurs on the summit of a mountain\
, for example\, has a direct effect on the sea and vice versa. It is throu
gh the liminal interaction of these primordial forces and elements that th
e universe and all life within it are created.\n\nOn Friday\, a performanc
e will be held drawing on Javanese and Balinese traditions of music and sh
adow puppetry. \n\nOn Saturday\, there will be an artist dialogue and work
shop.\n\nThere will be programming as well related to week-long residencie
s of three artists on West Campus. Building on the exhibit The Hum of Life
: A Thousand and One Tales from Bali which just ended\, a subset of the e
xhibit focused on the sea and the land (nyegara-gunung) will be on display

DESCRIPTION:Fashioning Justice: Ruth Bader Ginsburg ’54 and the Power of
Presence explores how dress functions as civic infrastructure that shapes
belonging\, authority\, and public life. Grounded in the clothing and acc

DESCRIPTION:The teeming diversity of life on our Pale Blue Dot—planet Ea

DESCRIPTION:The world has lost\, or is on the brink of losing\, many remar
kable bird species. Meanwhile\, many once-numerous bird populations are ra
pidly shrinking. In North America alone\, research led by Cornell scientis
ts has shown that the continent’s total number of birds has declined by
an estimated 2.9 billion adults over just a few decades\, reflecting wides
pread pressures such as habitat loss\, climate change\, pollution\, and in
vasive species. \n\nA collaboration among Cornell University Library\, the
Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and the Cornell Muse
um of Vertebrates\, the exhibit Last Call: Bird Decline and the Threat of
Extinction spotlights bird species lost to extinction\, as well as some br
ought back from the brink\, or thrillingly rediscoved after many decades.

DESCRIPTION:he Barbara L. Kuhlman Foundation\, Inc. is a non-profit entity
established by the estate of Barbara L. Kuhlman. Ms. Kuhlman\, a college
professor\, and life-long supporter of fiber arts achieved world-renowned
status as a collector\, lecturer\, and author in her field. The Foundation
continues her dedication to fiber arts and closely related fields with ph
 ilanthropic sponsorships\, grants\, and student scholarships.\n\nThe 2026
Barbara L. Kuhlman Scholars’ Group Exhibition showcases unique garments\
, wearable art\, and textile interpretations of the theme\, Elemental. Fiv
e students in the Department of Human Centered Design were awarded Kuhlman
scholarships in December 2025. Each scholar conducted design research\, f
ocusing on the stories they wanted to tell and the techniques they wanted
to explore from concept development to execution. The theme Elemental was
chosen to reflect upon the power of nature. Each student approached elemen
tal from a different perspective and yet one commonality seems to be the e
xamination of our relationship with nature. Will focusing on the elements
offer a reprieve? Can it take us to a dark place? According to the work in
this exhibition\, the answer is yes. It is a subject that contains multit
udes. We hope you enjoy seeing the creative journeys this year's Kuhlman S
 cholars took.

DESCRIPTION:ICM New Books Series\n\nFALL 2026\n\nWednesday\, September 23\
 n\nGoldwin Smith Hall\, G22 | 4:45p.m. – 6:15pm. \nFree and open to the
public\n\n \n\nICM is delighted to host Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed for a ta
lk about her recently published book\, Media\, Culture and Decolonization:
Re-righting the Subaltern Histories of Ghana (Rutgers University Press\,
 2025).\n\n \n\nDescription\n\nMedia\, Culture\, and Decolonization: Re-rig
hting the Subaltern Histories of Ghana invites us to look at media and cul
ture from a decolonial perspective. Through Dagbaŋ epistemologies and kno
wledge systems\, this book examines media by highlighting how African lang
uages\, cultures\, and traditions can shift how we think of knowledge. It
is an offering to anyone curious about the relationship between culture\,
language\, and media. By focusing on African language media in Ghana such
as film\, television\, and radio\, the book emphasizes the importance of e
spousing a decolonial politic and praxis in the process of co-creating kno
wledge with Indigenous communities. It connects the struggles of global ma
jority countries and demonstrates the ways in which (neo)colonialism and i
mperialism impede the work toward liberatory futures. This book demonstrat
es the potential that African language media hold as tools of cultural and
  epistemological decolonization (publisher's website).\n\n \n\nBio\n\nWunp
ini Fatimata Mohammed is Assistant Professor in the Department of Communi
cation at Cornell University. In addition to her recent book on media cult
ure in Ghana\, she is also co-editor of the collection African Women in D
igital Spaces: Redefining Social Movements on the Continent and in the Dia
spora (2023). Prior to joining the Department of Communication in July 202
4\, she served on the faculty at the University of Georgia. She is an acti
vist-scholar whose research focuses on feminisms\, decolonization\, and so
cial movements. Her research is published in peer reviewed journals such a
s Communication Theory\, The Howard Journal of Communications\, The Inte
rnational Journal of Communication\, Feminist Media Studies among others.
She has won top paper awards at the International Communication Associatio
n\, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication\, t

DESCRIPTION:Generative AI is currently one of the most polarizing and scru
tinized technologies in modern history. For very good reasons — well kn
own to all. Yet in the design professions we have been experimenting with
generative AI for almost ten years\, and by now we have some idea of what
this new technology can do\, of what it cannot do\, and\, likely\, what i
t should not do. Generative AI is a machine that makes new stuff out of o
ld stuff. Everything new that we get out of generative AI derives from so
mething we have put into it. Generative AI is a revolutionary imitation m
achine\, where imitation does not mean copy\, but assimilation and transfo
rmation.\n\nBy the way it works\, generative AI reminds us that every new
creation derives to some extent from precedent\; it reminds us that imitat
ion\, style\, and tradition are indispensable and inevitable components of
every form of creativity. But by the way it works\, generative AI also r
eminds us that creative imitation can only take us so far\; and that somet
imes we want to do better than the models that inspire us.\n\nThis lecture
is part of the Design Tech Public Lecture Series.
