DESCRIPTION:Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript
Collections commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Declaratio
n of Independence (1776–2026) with an exhibition of rare books\, letters
\, and documents on the life of George Washington.\n\nThese highlights of
the collection reflect the interests of Cornell’s first president\, Andr
ew Dickson White\, who had a fascination with both American history and bo
ok collecting. The acquisition of rare materials relating to Washington an
d his era formed an integral part of White’s educational vision. Despite
subsequent transformations in the discipline\, White’s principle remain
s resonant: collecting\, displaying\, and teaching with rare books\, autog
raphs\, signatures\, and portraits make history tangible and alive.

DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of post-independence nation-building\, es
pecially during the New Order regime\, Indonesia has consistently assimila
ted the ocean to a land-based perspective\, and one moreover that focuses
-- under the rubric of ‘landscape’-- on its more solid\, extractive\,
and materially driven formations. But this was not always the case. What h
appens if we regard the land from the point of view of the sea?\n\nNyegara
-Gunung is a divine “marriage” of two powerful natural elements\, inex
tricably tied to one another. Whatever occurs on the summit of a mountain\
, for example\, has a direct effect on the sea and vice versa. It is throu
gh the liminal interaction of these primordial forces and elements that th
e universe and all life within it are created.\n\nOn Friday\, a performanc
e will be held drawing on Javanese and Balinese traditions of music and sh
adow puppetry. \n\nOn Saturday\, there will be an artist dialogue and work
shop.\n\nThere will be programming as well related to week-long residencie
s of three artists on West Campus. Building on the exhibit The Hum of Life
: A Thousand and One Tales from Bali which just ended\, a subset of the e
xhibit focused on the sea and the land (nyegara-gunung) will be on display

DESCRIPTION:The teeming diversity of life on our Pale Blue Dot—planet Ea
rth—is under grave threat from the impact of our own activity\, and biol
ogists are raising the alarm about accelerating rates of decline in the pl
ant and animal species of our world\, with sobering implications for the l
ong-term health and well-being of human communities. But if we are the mai
n drivers of biodiversity decline\, we also have the power to change the t
rend. \n\nOrganized by Cornell University Library\, Going to Gone features
illustrations from historical studies of our natural world found in the l
ibrary’s collections and reflects on the looming possibility of a “Six
th Extinction” on Earth. The exhibit identifies some of the key factors
behind the decline of animal species in the 21st century. It also highligh
ts emerging research insights and conservation efforts to give us hope and
conviction that preserving the biodiversity of our beautiful planet is wi
thin our grasp.\n\nThis exhibit is concurrent with related exhibits at Man

DESCRIPTION:The world has lost\, or is on the brink of losing\, many remar
kable bird species. Meanwhile\, many once-numerous bird populations are ra
pidly shrinking. In North America alone\, research led by Cornell scientis
ts has shown that the continent’s total number of birds has declined by
an estimated 2.9 billion adults over just a few decades\, reflecting wides
pread pressures such as habitat loss\, climate change\, pollution\, and in
vasive species. \n\nA collaboration among Cornell University Library\, the
Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and the Cornell Muse
um of Vertebrates\, the exhibit Last Call: Bird Decline and the Threat of
Extinction spotlights bird species lost to extinction\, as well as some br
ought back from the brink\, or thrillingly rediscoved after many decades.
 Featuring specimens\, historical illustrations\, photographs\, video and s
ound recordings\, the exhibit showcases how these resources help scientist
s better understand bird decline and loss\, as well as how conservation ef
forts can help them recover. \n\nThis exhibit is concurrent with related e

DESCRIPTION:he Barbara L. Kuhlman Foundation\, Inc. is a non-profit entity
established by the estate of Barbara L. Kuhlman. Ms. Kuhlman\, a college
professor\, and life-long supporter of fiber arts achieved world-renowned
status as a collector\, lecturer\, and author in her field. The Foundation
continues her dedication to fiber arts and closely related fields with ph
 ilanthropic sponsorships\, grants\, and student scholarships.\n\nThe 2026
Barbara L. Kuhlman Scholars’ Group Exhibition showcases unique garments\
, wearable art\, and textile interpretations of the theme\, Elemental. Fiv
e students in the Department of Human Centered Design were awarded Kuhlman
scholarships in December 2025. Each scholar conducted design research\, f
ocusing on the stories they wanted to tell and the techniques they wanted
to explore from concept development to execution. The theme Elemental was
chosen to reflect upon the power of nature. Each student approached elemen
tal from a different perspective and yet one commonality seems to be the e
xamination of our relationship with nature. Will focusing on the elements
offer a reprieve? Can it take us to a dark place? According to the work in
this exhibition\, the answer is yes. It is a subject that contains multit
udes. We hope you enjoy seeing the creative journeys this year's Kuhlman S
 cholars took.

DESCRIPTION:A Simple\, Statistically Robust Test of Discrimination\n\nImag
ine auditing a bank for discrimination. If one group of borrowers repays t
heir loans more than other groups\, that suggests the bank held them to a
more stringent standard\, only lending to the most creditworthy applicants
from that group. Such "outcome tests" are one of the most common empirica
l approaches for detecting double standards in lending\, hiring\, criminal
justice\, and other domains. Despite their simplicity\, outcome tests suf
fer from well-known statistical issues and often miss discrimination or ev
en mistake discrimination for favorable treatment. "Benchmark tests"—whe
re\, for example\, researchers directly compare lending rates across diffe
rent groups—are the most common alternative\, but suffer from their own
deep limitations. Here we introduce a robust outcome test\, which consider
s both the rate at which decisions are made (benchmark tests) and how ofte
n those decisions succeed (outcome tests). Despite their individual fallib
ility\, carefully combining benchmark and outcome tests retains the simpli
city of the original approaches while yielding surprisingly strong statist
ical guarantees under a common non-parametric assumption that we show—bo
th empirically and theoretically—likely holds approximately in real-worl
d data. We illustrate our robust outcome test with 2.8 million police stop
s from across California\, finding evidence of widespread racial discrimin
ation\, a pattern that the standard outcome test would miss.\n \n\nBio: Jo
hann D. Gaebler is an assistant professor in the Technology Group in NYU S
tern's Department of Technology\, Operations\, and Statistics. He develops
statistical and computational methods to improve organizational decisions
and public policy\, and to make AI systems safer and more trustworthy. Hi
s research spans responsible AI and alignment\, algorithmic decision-makin
g\, and computational social science\, building conceptual and practical t
ools to address issues in areas like education\, hiring\, criminal justice
\, elections\, and news media. Johann studied statistics (Ph.D. and M.S.)

DESCRIPTION:Department of History of Art & Visual Studies Pulse of Art His
tory Lecture Series.\n\nJoin us for a talk by Joan Kee\, (Director of the
Institute of Fine Arts at NYU).\n\nThis Pulse Lecture will take place in G
oldwin Smith Hall G22.\n\n \n\nAbstract\nOver 15 years ago\, Polish art hi
storian Piotr Piotrowski asked a deceptively simple question we have not b
een able to answer: "how does marginal art change the perception of the ar
t of the center?" I take up that question by proposing a different model f
or how an artist's practice moves through history. Rather than treating an
artist's trajectory as a set of connections\, affinities\, or influences
accumulated across a flat historical field\, I argue that practice is bett
er understood as a geodesic — the straightest possible path through a fi
eld curved by accumulated mass. Mass names the material and conceptual den
sity an artist carries into the present\, whether through a medium\, a tra
dition\, or an institution. Form registers where that mass has curved a pr
actice with enough density that only this shape could emerge. I trace the
model through three bodies of work usually read as anomalous within global
art history\, with a special emphasis on the sculptures of Buryat artist
Serenjab Baldano from 1969 to 1975\, made amidst Soviet suppression and ex
ile.\n\nBiography\nJoan Kee is the Judy and Michael Steinhardt Director of
the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU\, where she fosters new communities and
forms of art historical inquiry across disciplines and geographies. She e
xamines how artists deploy form within and against ethical\, legal\, and
geopolitical frameworks. Current research includes work arisingi from a Ge
tty-funded initiative on Central Asia\, overseeing the publication Primary
Documents: Korea for MoMA and an exhibition highlighting intersections be
tween Asian and African art and culture\, also at MoMA\, opening in Summer
2027. Her books include The Geometries of Afro Asia: Art Beyond Solidarit
y (2023)\; Models of Integrity: Art and Law in Post Sixties America (2019)
\; and Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method (2013
