 n of Independence (1776–2026) with an exhibition of rare books\, letters

 the collection reflect the interests of Cornell’s first president\, Andr
 ew Dickson White\, who had a fascination with both American history and bo
 ok collecting. The acquisition of rare materials relating to Washington an

 of fragmented spaces reveals disjointed views — bodies without faces\, v
 iews that are never simply given but must be physically negotiated — exp
 osing the compromises of dense living\, where seeing and being seen are ne

 egins to dissolve.\n\nThe Housing Innovation Lab (HiLab) explores the inte

 t in our lives\, moved from one place to another\, whether across borders 
 or just down the street.  In a collaborative effort between the Migrations
  Program and Cornell University Library\, installations located at three c
 ampus libraries—Olin Library\,  Mann Library and the Engineering Library
  in Carpenter Hall­—showcase writing\, art\, and media created by Corne
 ll students and staff to share the ways that migration shapes their lives.

 l University Library exhibition Rivers of Ice traces the evolving study of
  glaciers through rare books\, illustrations\, maps\, and photographs. Fro
 m eighteenth-century descriptions of Alpine and Icelandic snowfields to mo
 dern analytical techniques\, items on view reveal how scientists\, explore
 rs\, and photographers have studied glaciers to better understand Earth’
 s geological and climate history. Covering about 10 percent of Earth’s l
 and and storing 70 percent of its fresh water\, glaciers have become key i
 ndicators of climate change. Drawing from the library’s Rare and Manuscr
 ipt Collections\, the exhibition features photographs from James Balog’s
   Extreme Ice Survey (2007–2022)\, along with items from professor of ge
 ography and geology Ralph Stockman Tarr’s pioneering expeditions to Gree
 nland and Alaska (1896–1911)\, highlighting Cornell University’s contr
 ibutions to modern glaciology. \n\nRivers of Ice will be on view in the Di
 vision of Rare and Manuscript Collections’ Hirshland Exhibition Gallery

 kable bird species. Meanwhile\, many once-numerous bird populations are ra
 pidly shrinking. In North America alone\, research led by Cornell scientis
 ts has shown that the continent’s total number of birds has declined by 
 an estimated 2.9 billion adults over just a few decades\, reflecting wides
 pread pressures such as habitat loss\, climate change\, pollution\, and in
 vasive species. \n\nA collaboration among Cornell University Library\, the
  Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and the Cornell Muse
 um of Vertebrates\, the exhibit Last Call: Bird Decline and the Threat of 
 Extinction spotlights bird species lost to extinction\, as well as some br
 ought back from the brink\, or thrillingly rediscoved after many decades. 
 Featuring specimens\, historical illustrations\, photographs\, video and s
 ound recordings\, the exhibit showcases how these resources help scientist
 s better understand bird decline and loss\, as well as how conservation ef

 mes ended up on buildings. Unsung Ithacans is a new walking tour from The 
 History Center in Tompkins County that starts and ends at 110 North Tioga 
 Street\, winding through The Commons\, down State Street\, and into DeWitt
  Park to visit the people who quietly shaped this city. You’ll meet a Gr
 eek immigrant whose candy shop perfumed an entire block\, a husband-and-wi
 fe pair of doctors and scholars who desegregated a hospital and a universi
 ty\, a city missionary who founded a children’s home\, a young woman who
  gave her unwanted suitors nicknames like “Expire\,” a minister who ta
 lked her way into a doctorate no German university would grant a woman\, a
 nd a bulldog who rode the train to Cornell football games and once got arr
 ested. \nUsing historic photographs\, maps\, and firsthand newspaper accou
 nts\, guides bring these stories back to life at the very spots where they
  happened. Their lives span the late 1700s through the modern day\, and to
 gether they show how Ithaca got built\, created\, and cooked into the plac
 e it is now. \nTour Details\n\nSchedule: Thursdays through Saturdays\, 5:3
 0–6:45 PM\, through September 19\, 2026\nDuration: 75 minutes\nRoute: Si
 dewalks\, gravel paths\, and grass\, with a slight incline\nAges: 16–116

 tendees and hosting approximately 100 at the event peak. We will host 2-3 
 musicians of a contracted band for live music at this social dance event.
