  Collections commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Declaratio
 n of Independence (1776–2026) with an exhibition of rare books\, letters

 the collection reflect the interests of Cornell’s first president\, Andr
 ew Dickson White\, who had a fascination with both American history and bo
 ok collecting. The acquisition of rare materials relating to Washington an
 d his era formed an integral part of White’s educational vision. Despite

DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of post-independence nation-building\, es
 pecially during the New Order regime\, Indonesia has consistently assimila
 ted the ocean to a land-based perspective\, and one moreover that focuses 
 -- under the rubric of ‘landscape’-- on its more solid\, extractive\, 
 and materially driven formations. But this was not always the case. What h
 appens if we regard the land from the point of view of the sea?\n\nNyegara
 -Gunung is a divine “marriage” of two powerful natural elements\, inex
 tricably tied to one another. Whatever occurs on the summit of a mountain\
 , for example\, has a direct effect on the sea and vice versa. It is throu
 gh the liminal interaction of these primordial forces and elements that th
 e universe and all life within it are created.\n\nOn Friday\, a performanc
 e will be held drawing on Javanese and Balinese traditions of music and sh
 adow puppetry. \n\nOn Saturday\, there will be an artist dialogue and work
 shop.\n\nThere will be programming as well related to week-long residencie
 s of three artists on West Campus. Building on the exhibit The Hum of Life
 : A Thousand and One Tales from Bali  which just ended\, a subset of the e
 xhibit focused on the sea and the land (nyegara-gunung) will be on display
  in the 5th floor Southeast Asia gallery of the Johnson Museum\, including
  the acquisition and installation of an ider-ider painting on the symposiu
 m theme by Citra Sasmita\, one of the visiting artists.

 rth—is under grave threat from the impact of our own activity\, and biol
 ogists are raising the alarm about accelerating rates of decline in the pl

 ong-term health and well-being of human communities. But if we are the mai
 n drivers of biodiversity decline\, we also have the power to change the t
 rend. \n\nOrganized by Cornell University Library\, Going to Gone features
  illustrations from historical studies of our natural world found in the l
 ibrary’s collections and reflects on the looming possibility of a “Six

 ts has shown that the continent’s total number of birds has declined by 
 an estimated 2.9 billion adults over just a few decades\, reflecting wides
 pread pressures such as habitat loss\, climate change\, pollution\, and in
 vasive species. \n\nA collaboration among Cornell University Library\, the
  Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, and the Cornell Muse
 um of Vertebrates\, the exhibit Last Call: Bird Decline and the Threat of 
 Extinction spotlights bird species lost to extinction\, as well as some br
 ought back from the brink\, or thrillingly rediscoved after many decades.

 ilanthropic sponsorships\, grants\, and student scholarships.\n\nThe 2026 
 Barbara L. Kuhlman Scholars’ Group Exhibition showcases unique garments\
 , wearable art\, and textile interpretations of the theme\, Elemental. Fiv
 e students in the Department of Human Centered Design were awarded Kuhlman
  scholarships in December 2025. Each scholar conducted design research\, f
 ocusing on the stories they wanted to tell and the techniques they wanted 
 to explore from concept development to execution. The theme Elemental was 
 chosen to reflect upon the power of nature. Each student approached elemen
 tal from a different perspective and yet one commonality seems to be the e
 xamination of our relationship with nature. Will focusing on the elements 
 offer a reprieve? Can it take us to a dark place? According to the work in
  this exhibition\, the answer is yes. It is a subject that contains multit
 udes. We hope you enjoy seeing the creative journeys this year's Kuhlman S
 cholars took.

  Johannes Betz studied automotive engineering at Coburg University of Appl
 ied Sciences (B.Eng.\, 2013) and the University of Bayreuth (M.Sc.\, 2013)
 \, as well as Philosophy of Science and Technology at the Technical Univer
 sity of Munich (M.A.\, 2019). From 2013 to 2018\, Johannes was a research 
 associate at the Technical University of Munich\, where he earned his Dr.-
 Ing. degree in 2019 with a dissertation on the “Evaluation of an Intelli
 gent Fleet Dispatching System for Mixed Vehicle Fleets.” From 2018 to 20
 20\, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Automotive Technolog
 y at the Technical University of Munich\, where he founded the TUM Autonom
 ous Motorsport team\, which has since competed successfully in internation
 al competitions. From 2020 to 2022\, he was a postdoctoral researcher at t
 he University of Pennsylvania\, where he worked in the xLab for Safe Auton
 omous Systems. In 2023\, he was appointed Rudolf Mößbauer Professor at t
 he Technical University of Munich\, where he holds the Professorship of Au
 tonomous Vehicle Systems in the Department of Mobility Systems.\n\nBetz’
 s research focuses on holistic software development for mobile robots and 
 autonomous vehicles with the goal of developing the next generation of int
 elligent autonomous systems. By developing new algorithms for environmenta
 l awareness\, path and behavior planning\, and control\, these robots will
  be able to interact with each other and with humans while operating safel
 y\, efficiently\, and powerfully. A big focus of his research is the integ
 ration of Ai-based techniques to achieve end-to-end models. With these inn
 ovative algorithms\, it will be possible to efficiently and effectively ma
 ke the right decisions\, especially in complex and uncertain environments.
  Simulation environments and various real-world vehicle platforms like aut
 onomous cars\, quadruped robots\, and humanoids are used to generate data 
 and validate these algorithms. With real-robot deployment\, safe and trust
 worthy autonomy will be enabled across a wide range of highly integrated r
 obotic applications.

DESCRIPTION:In the late 1990s\, a new private military company (PMC) from 
 South Africa\, Executive Outcomes\, intervened in Angola and Sierra Leone\
 , where the company's operations ushered in a ceasefire. Still\, when Exec
 utive Outcome's CEO\, Eeben Barlow\, declared his PMC capable of doing "wh
 at blue helmets could not\," few in the peacekeeping and NGO world took hi
 m seriously. Twenty years later\, after the rise of the Russian PMC Wagner
  Group\, peacekeeping and mercenaries are direct competitors. Countries wh
 o traditionally contributed soldiers to the UN\, such as Rwanda\, Uganda\,
  and Burundi\, now market their troops to Exxon and the Gaza Board of Peac
 e. Whether UN peacekeeping can survive this latest round in the privatizat
 ion of warfare remains to be seen. \n\nAbout the speaker\n\nJohn Lechner g
 raduated from the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) Program at G
 eorgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. At Georgetown\, John f
 ocused on security issues in Central Africa and the Sahel\; Turkey\; Russi
 a\, and the former Soviet Union. He is an expert on Russia’s growing inf
 luence in Africa. He speaks fluent Russian\; advanced French\, Turkish\, a

 stills the flows and values of life in Jakarta\, Indonesia’s largest cit
 y and financial core\, into a central idea: The Urban Grotesque. The urban
  grotesque is a name and framework for situating the dynamic\, generous\, 
 predatory\, and unpredictable textures of Jakarta’s financial lives. The
  talk presents the vantage points of individuals who experience the high s
 ocial costs of living in the city\, tracking their commonplace gestures of
  giving and taking to build a systematic analysis of how redistribution\, 
 circulation\, and compliance dominate urban life. This talk will focus on 
 the predatory aspects of debt and redistribution in the city. Combining et
 hnography and memoir\, and playing with genre\, the talk showcases the cha
 llenges of capturing the financial edge of urban life without romanticizin
 g the fast-paced economic developments and collective forms of resilience 
 that characterize this Global South city. \n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nDoreen 
 Lee is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Northeastern University. She
  received her PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from Cornell University wi
 th a concentration in Southeast Asian Studies and History. She directs the
  Global Asian Studies program at Northeastern University and serves as a c
 ouncilor for the American Ethnological Society. Her first book Activist Ar
 chives: Youth Culture and the Political Past in Indonesia was published by
  Duke University Press in 2016 and won the Harry J. Benda Prize from the A
 ssociation of Asian Studies in 2019. Her forthcoming book\, The Urban Grot

DESCRIPTION:From Dislocations to Luminescence: Heteroepitaxy of Dissimilar
  Semiconductors for Infrared Optoelectronics\n\nIntegrating dissimilar sem
 iconductors on a single crystalline platform could enable the next generat
 ion of devices for optical communication and sensing. Materials such as II
 I-V and chalcogenide semiconductors\, when epitaxially integrated with est
 ablished platforms\, offer distinct optoelectronic properties that expand 
 the capabilities of conventional technology. However\, bridging structural
  and chemical mismatches between these crystals introduces extended crysta
 l defects such as dislocations\, making this a significant materials scien
 ce challenge. A key theme of this talk is that structural perfection is no
 t always achievable or even necessary in heteroepitaxy. Materials and devi
 ce design can instead be used together to mitigate or tolerate the effects
  of these defects on performance.\n\nIn this talk\, I will first show how 
 understanding dislocation dynamics led us to design more defect-tolerant I
 II-V telecom lasers on silicon. By combining alloy hardening with InAs qua
 ntum dots\, we realized lasers 100× more reliable than prior state-of-the
 -art devices. I will then contrast this approach with IV-VI semiconductors
  such as PbSe\, which we demonstrate can tolerate naturally high dislocati
 on densities while maintaining efficient infrared light emission at wavele
 ngths spanning 3–8 µm for sensing applications. I will conclude with an
 isotropic chalcogenides\, including SnSe\, where we developed heteroepitax
 ial approaches to preserve optical anisotropy and harness crystalline-to-c
 rystalline phase transitions for reconfigurable photonics. By identifying 
 the key limitations in mismatched epitaxy\, we find new ways to preserve f
 unction during scalable integration of optoelectronic materials.\n \n\nBio
 : Kunal Mukherjee is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials
  Science and Engineering at Stanford University. His research focuses on c
 ompound semiconductor thin-film synthesis and defect science. He received 
 a B.Eng. in electrical engineering from Nanyang Technological University\,
  an M.S. from the National University of Singapore\, and an M.Eng. and Ph.
 D. in materials science and engineering from MIT. Before joining Stanford\
 , he held postdoctoral appointments at IBM and MIT and served as an assist
 ant professor in the Materials Department at UC Santa Barbara from 2016 to
  2020. His work on epitaxy and crystal defects has been recognized with an
  NSF CAREER Award\, the Corbett Prize at the International Conference on D
 efects in Semiconductors\, the Young Scientist Award at the International 
 Symposium on Compound Semiconductors\, and the Young Investigator Award at
  the North American Molecular Beam Epitaxy Conference.

 ng war as a toxic structure\, this talk begins at the belly of war\, in Fa
 llujah\, Iraq. Rubaii's forensic ethnography between 2014 and 2024 traces 
 weaponized metals from the sand and bodies of people in Fallujah back to t
 heir origins at war's jaws: mineral mines in the Democratic Republic of Co
 ngo\, where such metals are extracted by artisanal miners for use by tech 
 and weapons companies\, and to the smelters of Rwanda and the US\, where s
 uch minerals are refined and distributed. The talk also follows the post-b
 attle life of weaponized metals to its tail\, where these metals are recyc
 led by Indian laborers in steel factories in Iraqi Kurdistan as a central 
 part of the concrete industry\; or to Colfax\, Louisiana where they are de
 stroyed in burn pits\; and to Guam’s coral reef\, where they are detonat
 ed. At each site\, people are trapped in biochemically and socially toxic 
 relations with components of weaponized earth. By tracing the toxic exposu
 res people face at multiple sites of metal extraction\, weaponization\, re
 use\, and disposal\, Rubaii’s talk identifies two key points about war's
  long chain of supply: 1) the many bodies and people whose lives are ravag
 ed by warfare far from the site and dates of documented battles\, and 2) l
 ocations for antiwar intervention in an increasingly diffuse network of co
 rporate and contracted war-making. \n\nKali Rubaii is a cultural anthropol
 ogist at Purdue University whose scholarship focuses on displacement\, hea
 lth justice\, and the environmental impacts of war. She is the author of R
 esurgency: Outlasting the War on Terror in Iraq and co-editor of The Socia
 l Properties of Concrete. She leads the Parts Per Million Project \, an in
 terdisciplinary\, international team of researchers concerned with multi-g
 enerational health effects of environmental exposures from the war industr
 y.  She also co-leads the War and Geos project on military supply chains a
 nd the environmental legacies of warfare.

 n upstate New York in 2001\, nine-year-old twins Sabina and Camilla spend 
 the summer weathering the moods of their erratic mother while finding them
 selves pulled toward diverging interests. Their lives are shaken up by the
  arrival of an Arab French family across the street. Thrilled by what she 
 sees as a link to the country of her origins\, Sabina attempts to befriend
  the family’s son\, Khalil\, and is rebuffed for reasons she doesn’t u
 nderstand. Yet as the twins and Khalil come of age\, they are drawn into a

 -spanning chronicle of family\, inheritance\, and the reverberations of th
 e choices we do or don’t make. \nAbout the author: Madeleine Moss grew u
 p here in Ithaca\, New York\, and holds a degree in French literature from
  Cornell University. She received her MFA in fiction from Washington Unive
 rsity in St. Louis in 2020. Her debut novel\, MISTRANSLATION\, has been na
 med a “Most Anticipated Book of the Year” by Debutiful. She currently 
 lives in Strasbourg\, France\, where she teaches middle and high school En
 glish. \nAbout the conversation partner: Eleanor is the author of the memo
 ir Everything I Have Is Yours: A Marriage\, which was named a New York Tim
 es Notable Book and a Best Book of 2021 by Vogue\; and the novels The Twel
 ve-Mile Straight\, and Ten Thousand Saints\, which was named one of the 10
  Best Books of the Year by The New York Times and a finalist for the Award
  for First Fiction from The Los Angeles Times. It was also the basis for t
 he movie adaptation 10\,000 Saints starring Ethan Hawke. A Professor in th
 e Department of Writing at Ithaca College and a 2024 NYFA Fellow in Fictio

DESCRIPTION:Brad Edmondson\, author of the Tompkins County Historical Comm
 ission’s most recent book Hammer & Tongs: The Ironworks of Durand Van Do
 ren\, will do a special reading of selections from the book\, accompanied 
 by Durand Van Doren himself. \nDurand Van Doren has spent nearly fifty yea
 rs turning plain iron into something with a sense of humor. He came to bla
 cksmithing in 1972 through a ten-week course\, then sharpened his craft un
 der master smith Frank Turley in Santa Fe before setting up shop back east
  — first in an abandoned cowshed near Slaterville Springs\, and later at
  Durand’s Forge\, the studio he ran for years out of the Carmen Road Art
 ist Quarters in Mecklenburg — building what would become one of Tompkins
  County’s most recognizable artistic careers. His ironwork sits somewher
 e between the functional and the fanciful: gates\, lanterns\, and garden a
 ccents are his usual vocabulary\, but he’s never been content to leave t
 hem merely useful\, working in a bee\, a peony\, or some other small surpr
 ise and admitting he’s always trying to “make it more fun somehow.” 
 \nThis reading is presented by The Tompkins County Historical Commision an
 d Charley Githler\, County Historian. Registration is not required but is
