 deleine Moss\, in conversation with Eleanor Henderson! \nAbout the book: I
 n upstate New York in 2001\, nine-year-old twins Sabina and Camilla spend 
 the summer weathering the moods of their erratic mother while finding them
 selves pulled toward diverging interests. Their lives are shaken up by the
  arrival of an Arab French family across the street. Thrilled by what she 
 sees as a link to the country of her origins\, Sabina attempts to befriend
  the family’s son\, Khalil\, and is rebuffed for reasons she doesn’t u
 nderstand. Yet as the twins and Khalil come of age\, they are drawn into a
  tense and ever-shifting triangular dynamic. Mistranslation is a continent
 -spanning chronicle of family\, inheritance\, and the reverberations of th
 e choices we do or don’t make. \nAbout the author: Madeleine Moss grew u
 p here in Ithaca\, New York\, and holds a degree in French literature from
  Cornell University. She received her MFA in fiction from Washington Unive
 rsity in St. Louis in 2020. Her debut novel\, MISTRANSLATION\, has been na
 med a “Most Anticipated Book of the Year” by Debutiful. She currently 
 lives in Strasbourg\, France\, where she teaches middle and high school En
 glish. \nAbout the conversation partner: Eleanor is the author of the memo
 ir Everything I Have Is Yours: A Marriage\, which was named a New York Tim
 es Notable Book and a Best Book of 2021 by Vogue\; and the novels The Twel
 ve-Mile Straight\, and Ten Thousand Saints\, which was named one of the 10
  Best Books of the Year by The New York Times and a finalist for the Award
  for First Fiction from The Los Angeles Times. It was also the basis for t
 he movie adaptation 10\,000 Saints starring Ethan Hawke. A Professor in th
 e Department of Writing at Ithaca College and a 2024 NYFA Fellow in Fictio
 n\, she will publish her next novel\, The Galaxy\, in August 2027.

DESCRIPTION:Brad Edmondson\, author of the Tompkins County Historical Comm
 ission’s most recent book Hammer & Tongs: The Ironworks of Durand Van Do
 ren\, will do a special reading of selections from the book\, accompanied 
 by Durand Van Doren himself. \nDurand Van Doren has spent nearly fifty yea
 rs turning plain iron into something with a sense of humor. He came to bla
 cksmithing in 1972 through a ten-week course\, then sharpened his craft un
 der master smith Frank Turley in Santa Fe before setting up shop back east
  — first in an abandoned cowshed near Slaterville Springs\, and later at
  Durand’s Forge\, the studio he ran for years out of the Carmen Road Art
 ist Quarters in Mecklenburg — building what would become one of Tompkins
  County’s most recognizable artistic careers. His ironwork sits somewher
 e between the functional and the fanciful: gates\, lanterns\, and garden a
 ccents are his usual vocabulary\, but he’s never been content to leave t
 hem merely useful\, working in a bee\, a peony\, or some other small surpr
 ise and admitting he’s always trying to “make it more fun somehow.” 
 \nThis reading is presented by The Tompkins County Historical Commision an
