DESCRIPTION:The teeming diversity of life on our Pale Blue Dot—planet Ea
rth—is under grave threat from the impact of our own activity\, and biol
ogists are raising the alarm about accelerating rates of decline in the pl
ant and animal species of our world\, with sobering implications for the l
ong-term health and well-being of human communities. But if we are the mai
n drivers of biodiversity decline\, we also have the power to change the t
rend. \n\nOrganized by Cornell University Library\, Going to Gone features
illustrations from historical studies of our natural world found in the l
ibrary’s collections and reflects on the looming possibility of a “Six
th Extinction” on Earth. The exhibit identifies some of the key factors
behind the decline of animal species in the 21st century. It also highligh
ts emerging research insights and conservation efforts to give us hope and
conviction that preserving the biodiversity of our beautiful planet is wi
thin our grasp.\n\nThis exhibit is concurrent with related exhibits at Man
n Library: Last Call: Bird Decline and the Threat of Extinction\, and Keep
ing Common Birds Common: Birds and Habitat at Cornell Botanic Gardens and
Beyond. \n\nJoin us for an opening celebration for these exhibits on Thur
sday\, April 16\, with a lecture by Cornell Lab of Ornithology researcher
Jordan Boersma on "Finding Hope in the Search for Lost Birds" at 4:00 p.m.
in Mann Room 160\, and a reception at 5:00 p.m. in the Mann Library Galle
ry. All are welcome!\n\n \n\nOther related events include:\n\n“Birds and
Blooms” monthly bird and habitat tours\, starting April 17 with Cornell
Botanic Gardens and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Register at cornellbo
tanicgardens.org.\n\n“Keeping Our Common Birds Common” hybrid lecture
April 26\, 3:00 p.m.\, by Douglas Tallamy\, professor of entomology and wi
ldlife ecology in the University of Delaware\, presented by Cornell Botani
c Gardens\, at Call Auditorium\, Kennedy Hall by zoom (registration requir
 ed).\n\nBiodiversity Fest\, Thursday\, September 24:\, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p
.m. in the Mann Library lobby. Come find out about efforts being made by d
epartments\, programs and student groups across campus to sustain the dive
rsity of life on planet Earth!\n\nGoing to Gone is part of a series of exh

DESCRIPTION:Powering Smart Grids: The Case for Rigorous Modelling of Elect
ric Vehicle Charging and Discharging Behaviour\n\nElectric Vehicles hold t
ransformative potential as distributed energy assets while also addressing
air quality. However\, uncoordinated integration into the grid risks exac
erbating peak demand\, destabilising distribution networks\, and undermini
ng the transition to renewable energy. Realising the full promise of elect
rified transport requires moving beyond aggregate load assumptions towards
a rigorous\, behaviourally grounded understanding of how\, when\, and why
individuals charge and discharge their vehicles.\n\nThis talk examines th
e methods\, challenges\, and implications of modelling EV charging and dis
charging behaviour at the individual and fleet level. It explores how data
-driven modelling frameworks can capture the complex interplay between tra
vel demand\, user preferences\, energy needs\, and grid conditions\, provi
ding the behavioural intelligence necessary to underpin smart charging str
 ategies\, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) dispatch\, and infrastructure planning.\n\
nThe talk further highlights how disaggregate behavioural models can trans
late into tangible system-level benefits: reduced peak demand\, lower char
ging costs\, enhanced renewable energy integration\, and improved grid res
ilience. EV behaviour modelling sits at the intersection of transport\, en
ergy\, and data science\, and this talk makes the case that understanding
(dis)charging behaviour is not just academic research\, it is the foundati
on for intelligent\, sustainable energy systems.\n \n\nBio: Aruna Sivakuma
r is professor of consumer demand modelling and urban systems in the Depar
tment of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, and director of the Urban S
ystems Lab\, at Imperial College London. Her research sits at the intersec
 tion of transport\, energy\, and urban systems\, with a particular focus o
 n electric vehicle behaviour\, smart charging\, and activity-based travel
demand modelling. She has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal papers\,
attracting more than 5\,400 citations\, and has led major research initia
tives funded by EPSRC\, ESRC\, Innovate UK\, and the EU. She has served on
the Travel Behaviour and Values subcommittee of the Transportation Resear
ch Board in the United States\, and the Infrastructure Operation and Traff

DESCRIPTION:Splitting the Difference: The LZ 248 keV Event\n\nOn September
  1st\, the LUX-ZEPLIN collaboration reported a single nuclear-recoil event
at 248 keV in 220 live days of data — an energy far above where the sim
 plest WIMP models predict a signal\, in a background-depleted region\, lea
ving a 2.6σ excess. Within a day\, five theory papers interpreting it had
appeared on arXiv\, and the count has kept climbing.\n\n \n\nIn this firs
t-of-its-kind joint theory–experiment journal club\, we investigate this
anomaly from both an experimental and theoretical lens. Larissa Kiriliuk
will lay out the theory motivating the excitement around this anomaly. Gia
nfranco de Castro will then interpret this anomaly under the guise of the
broader experimental community.\n\n \n\nThis is the first of what we hope
will be a series of joint theory–experiment talks in the Cornell group\,
aimed at bridging the theory and experiment communities closer together!
