DESCRIPTION:In the early 1900s\, Ithaca\, NY earned some colorful nickname
s: “Sodom\,” “Sin City\,” and “Rum Town\, USA.” Long before na
tional Prohibition took hold\, Ithacans were already battling over booze\,
  morality\, and modernity. \n“King Alcohol Ends Reign” is a 10-block w
alking tour through downtown Ithaca that traces the city’s spirited (and
often surprising) history with Prohibition. Led by trained docents from T
he History Center\, this 60–70 minute experience takes you to the actual
sites of speakeasies\, dry raids\, church protests\, saloons\, and reform
rallies—uncovering how Ithaca became one of the first cities in New Yor
 k State to go dry. \nThrough historic images\, newspaper headlines\, and s
tories of resistance and reform\, you’ll see the city in a whole new lig
ht. Whether you’re a local or just visiting\, you’ll never look at dow
ntown Ithaca the same way again. \nTours are Thursday-Saturday at 5:30 PM
\nWhat: 75 minute walking tour \nWhere: The History Center in Tompkins Co

DESCRIPTION:Ithaca’s history isn’t only written by the people whose na
mes ended up on buildings. Unsung Ithacans is a new walking tour from The
History Center in Tompkins County that starts and ends at 110 North Tioga
Street\, winding through The Commons\, down State Street\, and into DeWitt
Park to visit the people who quietly shaped this city. You’ll meet a Gr
eek immigrant whose candy shop perfumed an entire block\, a husband-and-wi
fe pair of doctors and scholars who desegregated a hospital and a universi
 ty\, a city missionary who founded a children’s home\, a young woman who
gave her unwanted suitors nicknames like “Expire\,” a minister who ta
lked her way into a doctorate no German university would grant a woman\, a
nd a bulldog who rode the train to Cornell football games and once got arr
ested. \nUsing historic photographs\, maps\, and firsthand newspaper accou
nts\, guides bring these stories back to life at the very spots where they
happened. Their lives span the late 1700s through the modern day\, and to
gether they show how Ithaca got built\, created\, and cooked into the plac
 e it is now. \nTour Details\n\nSchedule: Thursdays through Saturdays\, 5:3

studio in Ithaca. The afternoons are structured to facilitate deep transit
ion:\nThe Welcome Circle: Setting the architectural theme.\nThe Snack & Sh

”\nArtistic Exploration: Hands-on creative work to map the internal self

etchbook specifically for this course to document their somatic evolution.
While the workshops are held in a cozy home environment\, Rawlins notes w
ith a wink that her “curious dogs” will be safely contained so the gro
up can focus on the work at hand.\nInvestment:\nFull 8-Week Blueprint: $10

DESCRIPTION:Seeing Ithaca\, August 2026 \nThe State of the Art Gallery wil
l be sponsoring “Seeing Ithaca: Through the Eyes of Artists” for the f
ourth year. It will take place in galleries and artist studios during the
month of August\, 2026 and is a celebration of art and artists in the Itha
ca area. \nThe State of the Art Gallery members will each show Ithaca insp
ired work in the gallery and many will have invited guests show with them.
A special feature this year is a wall dedicated to school children who h
ave been part of the gallery’s outreach program. Students from Belle Sh
erman\, Beverly J. Martin\, and Ithaca High School will display their art
in the gallery. That inclusion is always very popular with parents and fri
ends of the young artists. \nThe Gallery will host several special events
during the month. First Friday Gallery Night is August 7th\, 5-8 P.M. Thi
s event usually attracts hundreds of visitors. The monthly “Look Club”
will take place on Sunday\, August 16th\, 2-3 P.M. at the gallery and is
open to all to join the discussion of how to really look at art. The Ithac
a Garden Club will have a special collaboration in the gallery over the we
ekend of August 21-23 (12-5 each day) to celebrate “Art in Bloom”. Thi
s event is an opportunity for garden club designers to create an arrangeme
nt that reflects the essence of their chosen piece of art on the walls. Th
is has become a very popular weekend to share the creativity of the floral
  arrangers. \nOn August 29th from 12 to 5 pm\, many artists\, listed on th
e website\, will open their working studios to the public\, and visitors c
an have a deeper look into their art making process. Studios are located t
hroughout Tompkins county. The State of the Art Gallery will be open that
afternoon as well\, with several gallery members available for informal ar
 t talks. \nWe have a dedicated website\, seeingithaca.org \, that lists a
ll the galleries involved with this project as well as all the artists wit
h open studios. The other galleries that will be celebrating this event ar
e The Gallery at South Hill (950 Danby Road)\, Danby Gathery Art Works (17
74 Danby Road) and the Mink Gallery (614 N. Cayuga Street). \nThe organize
rs are hoping not only to have great displays of the art\, but also to get
artists and art lovers to meet and expand the liveliness and community of
  all of Ithaca.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the launch of Mistranslation by author Ma
deleine Moss\, in conversation with Eleanor Henderson! \nAbout the book: I
n upstate New York in 2001\, nine-year-old twins Sabina and Camilla spend
the summer weathering the moods of their erratic mother while finding them
selves pulled toward diverging interests. Their lives are shaken up by the
arrival of an Arab French family across the street. Thrilled by what she
sees as a link to the country of her origins\, Sabina attempts to befriend
  the family’s son\, Khalil\, and is rebuffed for reasons she doesn’t u
nderstand. Yet as the twins and Khalil come of age\, they are drawn into a
tense and ever-shifting triangular dynamic. Mistranslation is a continent
-spanning chronicle of family\, inheritance\, and the reverberations of th
e choices we do or don’t make. \nAbout the author: Madeleine Moss grew u
p here in Ithaca\, New York\, and holds a degree in French literature from
Cornell University. She received her MFA in fiction from Washington Unive
rsity in St. Louis in 2020. Her debut novel\, MISTRANSLATION\, has been na
med a “Most Anticipated Book of the Year” by Debutiful. She currently
lives in Strasbourg\, France\, where she teaches middle and high school En
glish. \nAbout the conversation partner: Eleanor is the author of the memo
ir Everything I Have Is Yours: A Marriage\, which was named a New York Tim
es Notable Book and a Best Book of 2021 by Vogue\; and the novels The Twel
ve-Mile Straight\, and Ten Thousand Saints\, which was named one of the 10
Best Books of the Year by The New York Times and a finalist for the Award
for First Fiction from The Los Angeles Times. It was also the basis for t
he movie adaptation 10\,000 Saints starring Ethan Hawke. A Professor in th

DESCRIPTION:Brad Edmondson\, author of the Tompkins County Historical Comm
ission’s most recent book Hammer & Tongs: The Ironworks of Durand Van Do
ren\, will do a special reading of selections from the book\, accompanied
by Durand Van Doren himself. \nDurand Van Doren has spent nearly fifty yea
rs turning plain iron into something with a sense of humor. He came to bla
cksmithing in 1972 through a ten-week course\, then sharpened his craft un
der master smith Frank Turley in Santa Fe before setting up shop back east
  — first in an abandoned cowshed near Slaterville Springs\, and later at
Durand’s Forge\, the studio he ran for years out of the Carmen Road Art
ist Quarters in Mecklenburg — building what would become one of Tompkins
County’s most recognizable artistic careers. His ironwork sits somewher
e between the functional and the fanciful: gates\, lanterns\, and garden a
ccents are his usual vocabulary\, but he’s never been content to leave t
hem merely useful\, working in a bee\, a peony\, or some other small surpr
ise and admitting he’s always trying to “make it more fun somehow.”
\nThis reading is presented by The Tompkins County Historical Commision an

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading and signing event with Robert T Perschel
\, author of Numinosity: A New England Forester’s Search for the Ineffab
le\, in conversation with Gary Wilhelm! \nAbout the book: There are moment
s in our lives where a door of awareness opens\, if only for a brief secon
 d. These are the moments that are simply impossible to express\, but momen
ts that have captured us for all time. \nJoin a New England forester on a
fifty-year quest for something larger than all of us. Here are a series of
essays\, stories and poems emerging from the natural world\, but always c
onnected to a life that has had its common share of illumination and darkn
ess\, hope and despair\, love and loss\, ambition and failure\, resistance
and acceptance\, anger and peace. Marking timber for harvest becomes a me
ditation on the unique connection between responsibility to the natural wo
rld and awareness of self and others. A shadow in the woods\, a voice on t
he wind opens up the mystery inherent in all the wisdom traditions. The im
pact of a sudden death on a logging crew lingers for decades\, demanding a
resolution between hubris and fate. The crushing retreat of the United St
ates from climate science and advocacy manifests in a longing for the prec
ise language of another time when we were closer to the natural cycles of
life. \nAbout the author: Robert’s vision is a closer connection to the
natural world and a region consisting of wild reserves surrounded by excep
tionally managed forests that can produce the climate-friendly products ne
eded in an era of changing climate. He has worked for the forest industry\
, as a consulting forester\, and led The Wilderness Society’s Land Ethic
and Network of Wildlands Programs. He chaired the 53-member Northern Fore
st Alliance and helped found the Forest Stewards Guild\, a national organi
zation of ecologically focused foresters. The Guild stands out as the only
professional society to place an ethical responsibility to the land first
and foremost in its code of ethics. More recently\, as Executive Director
of the New England Forestry Foundation\, he led the creation of Exemplary
Forestry standards\, utilizing climate smart management techniques to off
set 30 percent of the New England region’s carbon emissions. \nCurrently
\, as a speaker and author\, he is dedicated to promoting a bioeconomy tha
t emphasizes the construction of tall buildings using engineered wood. His
work focuses on replacing materials with high fossil fuel content\, such
as plastic\, steel\, and concrete\, with sustainably sourced and climate-r
esilient forest products. Bob lives in an oak forest on the north shore of
the island of Martha’s Vineyard. \nAbout the conversation partner: An I
thaca Native and 1970 Ithaca High School grad\, Gary married Carol Dentes
Wilhelm\, IHS ’71\, fifty-two years ago. They have three children—Hann
 ah\, Greta and Hugh—IHS grads of 2000\, 2004 and 2007 IHS respectively.
Gary met Bob Perschel at Yale where they were teammates on the football te
am and captains in successive years—Bob in 1972 and Gary in 1973. After
Yale\, Gary attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and earned a profess
ional degree in Architecture. A Registered Architect\, he retired from Cor
nell after over 35 years working first in Facilities Engineering designing
renovations toCampus buildings\, then as a Project Manager of Capital con
struction projects. The major projects Gary managed are centered on the Ar
ts Quad and include the Addition to Lincoln Hall\, the White Hall Renovati
