Drawing on her extensive correspondence with f ans\, I argue that Williams understood music-making as an interactive proc ess in which musicians and listeners shared responsibility for realizing j azz's transformative potential. As Black people confronted urban unrest\, psychological distress\, and incarceration\, Williams sought to heal other s through music\, charity\, and correspondence. In turn\, her own well-bei ng and sense of being became bound up with theirs. Reciprocal listening th us constituted an aesthetic\, political\, and ontological practice through which Williams and her listeners remade the Black public sphere. \n\nMas ayoshi Yamada is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow in Music and History. His r esearch examines the intersection of popular music and social change\, wit h an emphasis on the political potential of the listening public. Masa's b ook project explores the history of jazz fandom and the role of music enth usiasts in advancing racial justice in the United States and beyond.
