 l University Library exhibition Rivers of Ice traces the evolving study of
  glaciers through rare books\, illustrations\, maps\, and photographs. Fro
 m eighteenth-century descriptions of Alpine and Icelandic snowfields to mo
 dern analytical techniques\, items on view reveal how scientists\, explore
 rs\, and photographers have studied glaciers to better understand Earth’
 s geological and climate history. Covering about 10 percent of Earth’s l
 and and storing 70 percent of its fresh water\, glaciers have become key i
 ndicators of climate change. Drawing from the library’s Rare and Manuscr
 ipt Collections\, the exhibition features photographs from James Balog’s
   Extreme Ice Survey (2007–2022)\, along with items from professor of ge
 ography and geology Ralph Stockman Tarr’s pioneering expeditions to Gree
 nland and Alaska (1896–1911)\, highlighting Cornell University’s contr
 ibutions to modern glaciology. \n\nRivers of Ice will be on view in the Di
 vision of Rare and Manuscript Collections’ Hirshland Exhibition Gallery 
 through August 2027. Rivers of Ice is part of a series of exhibits titled 
 From the Brink: Contributions to a Sustainable Future from across Cornell\

  Rapson for an evening of stargazing! Youth will gather at Boname Park to

  fun facts about astronomy and the objects above us. This hands-on program
  is a great opportunity to explore space science and enjoy the outdoors af
 ter dark. Please note that is weather or sky conditions are not ideal for 
 stargazing\, the program will move indoors to the CCE building for a fun\,

DESCRIPTION:Spanning more than three centuries of exploration\, the Cornel
 l University Library exhibition Rivers of Ice traces the evolving study of
  glaciers through rare books\, illustrations\, maps\, and photographs. Fro
 m eighteenth-century descriptions of Alpine and Icelandic snowfields to mo
 dern analytical techniques\, items on view reveal how scientists\, explore
 rs\, and photographers have studied glaciers to better understand Earth’
 s geological and climate history. Covering about 10 percent of Earth’s l
 and and storing 70 percent of its fresh water\, glaciers have become key i
 ndicators of climate change. Drawing from the library’s Rare and Manuscr
 ipt Collections\, the exhibition features photographs from James Balog’s
   Extreme Ice Survey (2007–2022)\, along with items from professor of ge
 ography and geology Ralph Stockman Tarr’s pioneering expeditions to Gree
 nland and Alaska (1896–1911)\, highlighting Cornell University’s contr
 ibutions to modern glaciology. \n\nRivers of Ice will be on view in the Di
 vision of Rare and Manuscript Collections’ Hirshland Exhibition Gallery 
 through August 2027. Rivers of Ice is part of a series of exhibits titled

DESCRIPTION:Simon Thorogood is a distinctive research-led fashion artist a
 nd designer\, academic\, and creative consultant whose work sits at the in

 titioners associated with the intellectual culture surrounding Central Sai
 nt Martins during the 1990s and is acknowledged as one of the very first d
 esigners to integrate digital technology and coding into fashion practice\
 , presentation and communication.\n\nHe approaches fashion as an expanded 
 cultural medium\, focussing on generative systems\, audience interaction\,
  and synaesthetic experience to create ‘unfinished’ design outcomes.\n
 \nHe has published and exhibited his work extensively in museums\, galleri
 es and universities internationally\, and his garments are archived in som
 e of the most renowned costume collections in the world\, including London
 ’s V&A Museum.\n\nWithin academia\, he has established innovative resear
 ch studios\, developed forward-looking R&I initiatives\, authored original
  courses for PhD learning landscapes\, and has provide visionary leadershi
 p across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate design course.\n\nSimon
  continues to push perceptions of design\, championing progressive futures
  that compliment and extend conventional fashion education\, practice\, th

 ose to denounce these groups argue that organizational loyalties\, rituals

DESCRIPTION:A Simple\, Statistically Robust Test of Discrimination\n\nImag
 ine auditing a bank for discrimination. If one group of borrowers repays t
 heir loans more than other groups\, that suggests the bank held them to a 
 more stringent standard\, only lending to the most creditworthy applicants
  from that group. Such "outcome tests" are one of the most common empirica
 l approaches for detecting double standards in lending\, hiring\, criminal
  justice\, and other domains. Despite their simplicity\, outcome tests suf
 fer from well-known statistical issues and often miss discrimination or ev
 en mistake discrimination for favorable treatment. "Benchmark tests"—whe
 re\, for example\, researchers directly compare lending rates across diffe
 rent groups—are the most common alternative\, but suffer from their own 
 deep limitations. Here we introduce a robust outcome test\, which consider
 s both the rate at which decisions are made (benchmark tests) and how ofte
 n those decisions succeed (outcome tests). Despite their individual fallib
 ility\, carefully combining benchmark and outcome tests retains the simpli
 city of the original approaches while yielding surprisingly strong statist
 ical guarantees under a common non-parametric assumption that we show—bo
 th empirically and theoretically—likely holds approximately in real-worl
 d data. We illustrate our robust outcome test with 2.8 million police stop
 s from across California\, finding evidence of widespread racial discrimin
 ation\, a pattern that the standard outcome test would miss.\n \n\nBio: Jo
 hann D. Gaebler is an assistant professor in the Technology Group in NYU S
 tern's Department of Technology\, Operations\, and Statistics. He develops
  statistical and computational methods to improve organizational decisions
  and public policy\, and to make AI systems safer and more trustworthy. Hi
 s research spans responsible AI and alignment\, algorithmic decision-makin
 g\, and computational social science\, building conceptual and practical t
 ools to address issues in areas like education\, hiring\, criminal justice
 \, elections\, and news media. Johann studied statistics (Ph.D. and M.S.) 
 and mathematics (A.B.) at Harvard University and was a Knight-Hennessy Sch
 olar at Stanford University.

DESCRIPTION:Generative AI is currently one of the most polarizing and scru
 tinized technologies in modern history.  For very good reasons — well kn
 own to all.  Yet in the design professions we have been experimenting with
  generative AI for almost ten years\, and by now we have some idea of what
  this new technology can do\, of what it cannot do\, and\, likely\, what i
 t should not do.  Generative AI is a machine that makes new stuff out of o
 ld stuff.  Everything new that we get out of generative AI derives from so
 mething we have put into it.  Generative AI is a revolutionary imitation m
 achine\, where imitation does not mean copy\, but assimilation and transfo
 rmation.\n\nBy the way it works\, generative AI reminds us that every new 
 creation derives to some extent from precedent\; it reminds us that imitat
 ion\, style\, and tradition are indispensable and inevitable components of
  every form of creativity.  But by the way it works\, generative AI also r
 eminds us that creative imitation can only take us so far\; and that somet
 imes we want to do better than the models that inspire us.\n\nThis lecture
  is part of the Design Tech Public Lecture Series.
