 rth—is under grave threat from the impact of our own activity\, and biol
 ogists are raising the alarm about accelerating rates of decline in the pl

 ong-term health and well-being of human communities. But if we are the mai
 n drivers of biodiversity decline\, we also have the power to change the t
 rend. \n\nOrganized by Cornell University Library\, Going to Gone features
  illustrations from historical studies of our natural world found in the l
 ibrary’s collections and reflects on the looming possibility of a “Six
 th Extinction” on Earth. The exhibit identifies some of the key factors 
 behind the decline of animal species in the 21st century. It also highligh
 ts emerging research insights and conservation efforts to give us hope and
  conviction that preserving the biodiversity of our beautiful planet is wi
 thin our grasp.\n\nThis exhibit is concurrent with related exhibits at Man

DESCRIPTION:Alternative route found: Leveraging microfluidics and mathemat
 ical modeling to navigate translational drug discovery and development\n\n
 Biological systems are inherently dynamic\, and static measurements are of
 ten insufficient to capture the complex temporal interplay between drug ex
 posure (pharmacokinetics\, PK) and biological response (pharmacodynamics\,
  PD). Nevertheless\, current preclinical experimental approaches remain li
 mited in their ability to systematically investigate these dynamic PK-PD r
 elationships. Most in vitro studies\, for example\, rely on constant drug 
 concentrations that fail to recapitulate the time-varying exposure profile
 s observed in vivo. Animal studies can provide valuable PK-PD insights\, b
 ut species-specific differences in drug disposition and pharmacological re
 sponse often limit their translational relevance to human patients. To bri
 dge these gaps\, mathematical models have become increasingly important wi
 thin model-informed drug development frameworks. While such models are pow
 erful tools for predicting drug behavior and informing decision-making\, t
 heir success depends on experimental systems that can generate data tailor
 ed for model parameterization and validation. To address this need\, we ha
 ve developed a custom microfluidic perfusion platform capable of exposing 
 cells to precisely controlled\, physiologically relevant drug concentratio
 n profiles. By integrating these fit-for-purpose microfluidic assays with 
 mechanistic PK-PD and quantitative systems pharmacology  models\, our rese
 arch seeks to expand the translational PK-PD toolbox\, reduce reliance on 
 animal studies\, and improve the likelihood of clinical success for invest
 igational therapeutics. In this seminar\, I will provide an overview of th
 is platform and highlight its application to the design and translation of
  proximity-inducing drugs and molecularly targeted cancer therapeutics.\n 
 \n\nBio: Derek Bartlett is an assistant professor in the Division of Pharm
 acotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics within the Eshelman School of Pha
 rmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a BS
  degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and M.S. and Ph.D
 . degrees in chemical engineering from Caltech. At Caltech\, his dissertat
 ion research in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Davis focused on the developmen
 t of targeted delivery vehicles for siRNA therapeutics. Following postdoct
 oral training in cancer immunotherapeutics and radiation oncology at City 
 of Hope under the guidance of Dr. Andrew Raubitschek\, he spent 15 years w
 orking within the pharmaceutical industry across a variety of functions in
 cluding formulation\, process development\, quantitative systems pharmacol
 ogy\, and translational modeling and simulation. During this time\, he led
  conjugation process development for antibody-based molecular imaging agen
 ts\, developed mechanistic PK-PD models for drug modalities including bisp
 ecific T cell engagers and targeted protein degraders\, helped create nove
 l vaccine adjuvants\, and spearheaded the design and implementation of mic
 rofluidic PK-PD assays for drug discovery programs. His research group at 
 UNC builds upon this foundation by combining mechanistic PK-PD modeling an
 d microfluidic assays as an animal-alternative approach to guide the desig
 n and translational development of proximity-inducing drugs\, antibody-dru
 g conjugates\, and molecularly targeted therapeutics.

 ract:  \n\nRobots working in factories and homes will need to perform dext
 erous manipulation for diverse task goals in unstructured environments. Su
 ch open-world dexterous manipulation hinges on contact-rich and dynamic ph
 ysical interactions that are difficult to perceive\, specify\, and control
 . Today's robot learning systems treat physical interaction implicitly\, e
 xpecting physical understanding to emerge from scaling data and models\, w
 ith little evidence of when or whether it will. In this talk\, I present o
 ur recent progress toward physically grounded robot learning\, in which ex
 plicit yet learnable representations of physical interaction underlie how 
 manipulation skills are specified\, learned\, transferred\, and improved. 
 First\, I will present a framework that grounds high-level task specificat
 ions into structured spatial representations of interaction\, which enable
 s a mobile manipulator to generalize across environments\, task objectives
 \, and forms of user input. Second\, I will present an approach that decou
 ples embodiment-agnostic task reasoning from embodiment-specific motor con
 trol through contact-based interaction intents\, which enables zero-shot s
 kill transfer across structurally different robot hands and from human dem
 onstrations. Third\, I will present a data-generation engine that expands 
 a single human demonstration into millions of diverse\, physically validat
 ed training examples\, which enables robust functional dexterous grasping 
 of novel objects. Together\, these results suggest that anchoring learning
  in physical interaction offers a scalable path toward generalizable dexte
 rity in the open world.\n\nBio: \n\nKuan Fang is an Assistant Professor of
  Computer Science at Cornell University. His research draws on robotics\, 
 machine learning\, and computer vision to enable robots that acquire\, tra
 nsfer\, and continually improve their skills in the open world. Before joi
 ning Cornell\, he was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley and a resea
 rcher at the Boston Dynamics AI Institute. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. 
 from\nStanford University and his bachelor's degree from Tsinghua Universi
 ty. His research has been recognized with the Best Paper Awards of IEEE RA
 -L and ICRA\, a Computing Innovation Fellowship\, and faculty research awa
 rds from Amazon and NVIDIA.\n\nBackground on the Cornell Institute for Dig
 ital Agriculture:  \n\nAn interdisciplinary group of Cornell University fa
 culty began meeting in early 2017 to formulate an Initiative for Digital A
 griculture\, believing that Cornell is uniquely equipped to lead in this e
 merging arena that will benefit the public for generations. We define DA t
 o mean the application of computational and information technologies coupl
 ed with nanotechnology\, biology\, systems engineering and economics to bo
 th the research and operational sides of agriculture and food production. 
 With approximately 100 faculty from 5 Cornell colleges participating\, we 
 are collaborating with external stakeholders to shape and implement a rese
 arch agenda for DA that will build a pipeline of discovery and innovations

 University\n\nTitle:  The Sounds of Science:  Using Ultrasound to Discover
  Hidden Quantum Order\n\nHost:  Dan Ralph\n\nAbstract:  A sound wave trave
 ling through a crystal lattice is akin to a gravity wave traveling through
  space: both locally distort the geometry through which particles move. Un
 like space\, however\, crystals are densely populated with electrons whose
  collective behaviour responds sensitively to these distortions. As a resu
 lt\, ultrasound can provide deep insights into emergent quantum phenomena.
 \n\nOver the past decade\, my group has developed and revitalized ultrason
 ic techniques to study quantum materials\, uncovering new insights into su
 perconductivity\, magnetism\, and topological states of matter. Using this
  approach\, we have probed the symmetry of the superconducting order param
 eter in UTe2\, a leading candidate topological superconductor\, revealing 
 both unexpected simplicity and\, under pressure\, the emergence of remarka
 bly unconventional superconducting phases. We have also developed a new ul
 trasound-based experiment that reveals chiral phonon dynamics and establis
 hes connections between phonon Berry curvature and quantum magnetism.\n\n\
 nI will conclude by discussing the directions my group is currently pursui
 ng\, the broader role of quantum materials in modern condensed matter phys
 ics\, and how we can balance the complementary goals of fundamental unders
 tanding and technological impact.

 Biological Station in the Yasuni National Park in the Amazon in Ecuador. T
 ropical forests have a stunning array of diversity\, and adaptations to st
 rong species interactions\, while species in alpine ecosystems have highly
 -specialized adaptations to challenging environmental conditions. To study
  this gradient\, students will embark on a field course spanning multiple 
 biogeographic regions in Ecuador\, a region that boasts some the highest d
 egrees of species diversity and endemism. This program will involve travel
  in January to the Amazon followed by synthesizing those field observation
 s fduring the first seven weeks of spring upon return.
