 . Strangelove\, an American president calls a drunken Soviet Premier with 
 bad news: “…Dimitri\, you know how we've always talked about the possi
 bility of something going wrong with the Bomb...” The “something” is
  a deranged commander who has launched a nuclear attack on the Soviet Unio
 n\, which leads to nuclear apocalypse. While a global apocalypse has yet t
 o materialize\, the history of nuclear weapons is full of other things goi
 ng wrong. Indigenous lands have been destroyed\, hundreds of thousands (if
  not millions) of people have died of cancer\, and trillions of dollars ha
 ve been spent on weapons that one U.S. Defense Secretary ultimately conclu
 ded were “useless.”\n\nToday the majority of the world’s nations hav
 e joined the Treaty for the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)\, and su
 rveys suggest strong public support for the TPNW\, even in nations that po
 ssess nuclear weapons. However\, the nine nations in the world that have n
 uclear weapons are continuing a costly and dangerous nuclear arms race whi
 ch endangers all life on earth. In this full-day symposium\, distinguished
  experts from diverse disciplines—including physics\, political science\

  of heavy metal and incorporating a mix of instruments like flute\, violin
  and electric guitar. Their annual performance at Sage Chapel is a highlig
 ht of the spooky season in Ithaca!\n\nFaust—directed by the legendary F.
 W. Murnau—centers on an elderly alchemist named Faust (Gösta Ekman) who
  makes a pact with the demon Mephisto (Emil Jannings) to gain the power to
  protect his village from plague. Faust soon succumbs to temptation and as
 ks Mephisto to restore his youth and help him acquire all the hedonistic p
 leasures that earth can offer. Eventually\, his love affair with a young w
 oman named Gretchen (Camilla Horn) leads to tragic and devastating consequ
 ences for them both.\n\nFaust is the quintessential “deal with the devil
 ” tale based on a centuries-old European legend and Johann Wofgang Goeth
 e’s 1808 play\, which is considered one of Germany’s greatest literary
  works. The play also inspired the famous opera by Charles Guonod which di
 rector F.W. Murnau used as a map for his 1926 film. (Fun fact: Faust is th
 e opera being presented in Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera\, which 
 Cornell Cinema featured at Sage Chapel last year.) Virtually every "sell y
 our soul" type story from the film Crossroads to songs like "The Devil Wen
 t Down To Georgia" owes a debt to Faust — whether their creators realize

 oup of students and professors at Cornell University united by an urgency 
 to make revolutionary art formed the Victor Jara Collective\, named after 
 the Chilean musician assassinated during the Pinochet regime. In 1976\, th
 ey traveled to Guyana to\, as Victor Jara Collective member Lewanne Jones 
 put it\, “make film\, forge cultural alliances\, and activate revolution
 .” What they brought back is The Terror and the Time\, a landmark of ant
 icolonial cinema.\n\nIn the 50th anniversary year of the Victor Jara Colle
 ctive's formation\, the Anthropology Department will present a screening o
 f newly restored versions of The Terror and the Time and In the Sky's Wild
  Noise\, followed by a conversation with Lewanne Jones of the Victor Jara 
 Collective.\n\nTHE TERROR AND THE TIME (1978\, 75 min)\nThe terror is Brit
 ish colonialism in Guyana\; the time is 1953\, the year of the first\nelec
 tions under a provisional democratic constitution. Stylized scenes photogr
 aphed\nthroughout Georgetown\, capital of Guyana and the Guyanese countrys
 ide\,\naccompany the poems of Martin Carter and convey a sense of intense 
 political\nreform against a backdrop of poverty\, repression and silence. 
 The local scene is\nviewed against the international mise-en-scene of the 
 Cold War\, 1950s: the growth\nof foreign economic and military interests i
 n the Caribbean basin\, the coronation of\nQueen Elizabeth\, Mau Mau revol
 ts in Kenya\, and the U.S. covert wars against Cuba\,\nMalaysia\, Vietnam\
 , and Iran.\n\nIN THE SKY’S WILD NOISE (1983\, 29 min)\nIn the Sky’s W
 ild Noise is presents Guyana in the 1970s focused around an interview\nwit
 h Walter Rodney\, Guyanese historian and political activist\, who was assa
 ssinated\nin 1980. The interview with Walter Rodney was clandestinely film
 ed by the Victor\nJara Collective in 1976 in Georgetown during the product
 ion of The Terror and The\nTime. After Rodney’s death in 1980\, Lewanne 
 Jones produced and edited In the Sky’s\nWild Noise\, making use of the i
 nterview and incorporating newly acquired footage of\nRodney after his rel
 ease from jail 1979 and his funeral in 1980. Rodney speaks\nabout the poli
 tical\, social and economic conditions of the working class in Guyana in\n
 the 1970s.\n\nLewanne Jones is an audio-visual researcher and Archival Pro
 ducer in New York\nCity. She began her work in archives in the late 1970s 
 as a member of the Victor\nJara Collective that produced a ground-breaking
  documentary about colonialism in\nBritish Guiana\, The Terror and The Tim
 e. Since then\, she has conducted international\nresearch for films and te
 levision series\, museum installations and online educational\nproductions
 . Her work has been recognized by two nominations for News & \n\nDocumenta
 ry Emmy awards (in the archival research category) and she received an\nAc
 ker Award for community archival contributions in New York City. Eyes on t
 he\nPrize\, ABC’s Century\, PBS’s Freedom Riders and Black Panther: Va
 nguard of the\nRevolution\, 32 Sounds and Borderland are among the award-w
 inning projects to\nwhich she has contributed. She has conducted workshops
  on archival theory and\npractice at media research centers including at U
 nion Docs and BRIC TV (Brooklyn)\nthe Better Angels Foundation (Washington
  DC) and the Global Media Research\nCenter (Illinois)\, and has mentored e
