Description\n Mary Ellen Carroll: How To Talk Dirty and Influence Peop
le is the first exhibition to survey the work of acclaimed multidisciplina
ry artist Mary Ellen Carroll. The exhibition focuses on a selection of key
projects spanning over four decades and includes works exhibited for the
first time. The exhibition charts the import and impact of Carroll’s exp
loration of some of the most urgent issues of our time\, including environ
 mentalism\, architectural and technological infrastructure\, immigration\,
and urban legislation\, as well as the artist’s engagement with questio
ns of sexuality\, identity\, and being. \nSince the 1980s\, Carroll has pr
oduced a heterogeneous body of work taking the form of performance\, film\
 , photography\, writing\, architecture\, public art\, and policy. Yet\, th
e artist’s primary medium is the field of social relations that govern a
given time and context. An inheritor of conceptual\, project-based\, and
institutional-critique-based practices\, Carroll puts pressure on the cond
itions within which a work of art gains legibility\, while never forsaking
formal and aesthetic considerations. By their own account\, each project
is approached by asking\, “what do we consider a material as a work of a
rt and what is the problem I am trying to solve?” Carroll’s approach t
o art-making is collaborative and research-based\, often involving years o
f planning\, coordination\, and community engagement. As the exhibition ti
tle’s allusion to famed comedian and rabble-rouser Lenny Bruce suggests\
 , Carroll is equally a trickster\, scamp\, and intermediary\, applying a w
ryly humorous (though no less critical) approach to addressing society’s
most pressing issues. \nMany of Carroll’s works are ongoing and intenti
onally durational as is the case with their landmark\, multifaceted projec
t\, prototype 180 (1999-ongoing). Sited in the Sharpstown neighborhood of
Houston\, prototype 180 remains a legendary intervention into urban policy
in a city known for its famous lack of zoning and idiosyncratic land-use
policies\, and has taken multiple forms since its inception\, most notably
the 180-degree rotation of a mid-century suburban house in 2010 and the s
ubsequent “unbuilding” of the structure in 2017. Works such as prototy
pe 180 reveal the durational quality of the artist’s larger artistic pro
ject\, as well as Carroll’s tendency to avoid market-based criteria in f
avor of a rigorous\, continuously unfolding\, and adaptive mode of art mak
ing that is often geographically and temporally dispersed. Mary Ellen Carr
oll: How To Talk Dirty and Influence People continues CAMH’s tradition o
f presenting scholarly and in-depth survey exhibitions dedicated to the wo
rk of historically significant artists at pivotal moments in their career.
The exhibition will include selected works from the 1980s to the present\
, such as My Death is Pending… Because. (1986-2017)\, The Doppelganger T
 apes\, (1993-ongoing)\, prototype 180 (1999-ongoing)\, Federal (2003)\, in
destructible language (2006-ongoing)\, and PUBLIC UTILITY 2.0 (2008-ongoin
g)\, among others\, as well as a series of new commissions. \nMary Ellen C
arroll: How To Talk Dirty and Influence People highlights the multifaceted
\, aesthetically rigorous work of an artist who has demonstrated deft inst
itutional critiques of art and used their artwork to interact with and que
stion the politics and policies surrounding social and physical structures
\, including the ways in which bodies navigate these spaces. Employing a c
onceptually-driven form of exhibition making\, the exhibition both honors
and mirrors Carroll’s recursive\, materially diverse\, and ecologically-
attuned practice through a display in which works are always seen through\
, between\, and in relation to each other. Mary Ellen Carroll: How To Talk
Dirty and Influence People offers the occasion to reconsider Carroll’s
work and the questions it raises about identity and intimacy\, objects/ide
as and their afterlives\, and the value that political and social activism
informed by humor and play might offer contemporary critical practices. \
n About the Artist\n The work of New York-based conceptual artist Ma
ry Ellen Carroll (MEC\, studios) engages the disciplines of architecture\,
public policy\, film/media\, and technology. Carroll’s body of work spa
ns over four decades in a range of media that transcend genres. Fundamenta
lly\, the work investigates a single\, fundamental question: What do we co
nsider a work of art? It is dedicated to a social and political critique t
hat explores the interactions of subjectivity\, language\, power\, and kno
wledge.  \nCarroll is the recipient of numerous awards and honors includi
ng from the Guggenheim Foundation\, Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, American
Academy in Berlin\, Rockefeller Foundation\, Rauschenberg Foundation\, Gra

About\n \n Divination: Beverly Buchanan & Dionne Lee foregrounds Bev
erly Buchanan and Dionne Lee’s explorations of the myths\, majesty\, and
dispossessions embedded in the American landscape. The exhibition is the
second in a series organized by Senior Curator Rebecca Matalon to bring to
gether artists across generations as a way to open up new interpretations
of their work. The show follows the 2021 exhibition Wild Life: Elizabeth M
urray & Jessi Reaves\, which similarly presented an exchange between inter
generational artists. Divination pairs original photographs as well as ma
terials from the late Buchanan’s archives\, including photographs\, jour
 nals\, writing\, and ephemera\, with a selection of videos\, photographs\,
and sculptures by the Columbus-based Lee. While Buchanan (1940-2015) and
Lee (b. 1988\, New York City) are from different generations\, both artist
s explore relationships between Blackness and land\, mining racialized his
tories of the American landscape and its dualities as a site of sanctuary
and displacement\, sustenance and deprivation. The two artists share an in
terest in survivalist practices\, and each thinks of land as not only a ph
ysical place or substance to be encountered\, but an accumulation of ever-
shifting material and psychic entanglements. Over the last decade\, new s
cholarship has brought renewed and much deserved critical attention to Buc
hanan’s profound but underrecognized contributions to the history of lan
d art and environmental sculpture\, works that range from cast concrete sl
abs (“frustulas”) to her later small-scale “shack sculptures” that
memorialize the architectural styles of Southern homes and their owners.
This exhibition aims to delve into lesser-known aspects of the artist’s
practice\, for example\, her placing of small cast concrete works in grave
yards of enslaved peoples across rural Georgia\, and her “auto-archival
” use of photography to document these covert actions\, major public wor
ks\, and herself. Divination places Buchanan’s work in dialogue with Lee
’s photographic and filmic examinations of what it means to tend to\, se
ek out\, and honor the land on which we live\, including its hidden and da
rker histories. The exhibition positions their practices as forms of divin
ation-making visible what all too often remains unseen. \n \n Organi

Carolina\, Beverly Buchanan (1940-2015) grew up in South Carolina. By the
late 1960s\, Buchanan had earned several university degrees in the science
s\, and was working as a public health worker and educator in New York Cit
y and East Orange\, New Jersey. \nIn 1971\, Buchanan enrolled at the Art S
tudents’ League\, where she studied with Harlem Renaissance painter Norm
an Lewis. From that time on\, Buchanan devoted her time to making art. In
the 1970s\, she considered herself an abstract expressionist painter and c
ompleted a series of “Wall” paintings which were exhibited at the Mont
clair Art Museum in New Jersey in 1976.  \nIn 1977\, Buchanan moved back
to the South. From 1979 to 1986\, Buchanan made a series of public stone s
culptures across the American Southeast\, which she allowed to decay over
time and become part of the surroundings. Most notably\, in 1979 she compl
eted Ruins and Rituals (also the title of the Brooklyn Museum retrospectiv
e from 2016-2017)\, and in 1980 Marsh Ruins\, with funding from a Guggenhe
im Fellowship. Some of these works can still be found\, while others have
withered away. They contemplate the idea of “ruination” and commemorat
e the history of Southern Black communities. \nBy the mid 1980s\, Buchanan
was exploring Southern vernacular architecture through her practice. She
created a series of makeshift sculptures known as “shacks” in which sh
e paid tribute to the improvised and self-built homes of Black communities
in rural Georgia. Often attached to her sculptures were hand-written or t
yped narratives\, which she referred to as “legends\,” that gave voice
to a cast of characters\, some remembered and others imagined. \nBuchanan
’s later work is intimately linked to her natural surroundings and folk
art. As a native Southerner\, she drew on memories from her childhood as w
ell as the lush Georgian landscape and yard art of local self-taught artis
ts. A passionate gardener\, Buchanan produced vivid oil pastel flower draw
ings and small assemblage works. \nThe winner of numerous honors during he
r long career\, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fe
llowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, Buchanan’s
work is in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\
, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whi
tney Museum\, among others. A posthumous solo retrospective\, Ruins and Ri
tuals\, curated by Jennifer Burris and Park McArthur\, was held at the Bro
oklyn Museum of Art in 2016-17. \n About Dionne Lee\n Dionne Lee (b

ore power\, survival\, and personal history in relation to the American la
ndscape. Lee lives and works in Columbus\, Ohio and received an MFA at Cal

DESCRIPTION:BOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased to present four new exhibitions ope
 ning Friday\, September 11 \, 2026 6–9 PM. \nBOX 13 ArtSpace is pleased
to present in the Front BOX gallery: “Cryptic Bodies\,” an exhibition
of four interdisciplinary Houston-based femme artists who work in sculptur
e\, collage\, zines\, and socially engaged practices. As one excavates the
ir layered work\, bodies are revealed\, both human\, non-human\, touching
upon women’s health\, fragmentary memories\, and interconnected ecosyste
ms and identities. The exhibit in the Back gallery features Chris Ireland
’s “Dead Letter Office\,” which explores home\, memory\, and placele
ssness through carefully constructed collages that combine fragments from
lived experience\, online archives\, real estate listings\, and personal p
hotographs. For “Mother Earth Weaves Infinite” in the Box 13 Window BO
X Gallery\, Cathie Kayser and Ellen H Ray use a variety of materials and t
 echniques\, including fabrics\, mulberry silks\, soft sculpture\, paper ma
che\, and wire and paper sculptures to present an immersive experience tha
t highlights the complexity of the mycorrhizal network. With this work\, t
he artists invite viewers to consider the interconnectedness of all living
systems. The Earth\, and the universe encompassing it\, is a master plan
of intelligent design that holds lessons for us about systems that work. M
oving to our Upstairs BOX gallery we are excited to introduce “Grip Stre
ngth: An Army of Lovers Shall Not Fail” by KT Abadir-Mullally. Through i
nteractive soft sculptures and ceramics inspired by strength sports and qu
eer activism\, the exhibition invites visitors to engage with themes of qu
 eer resilience\, desire\, collective power\, and resistance. \nThe exhibit
ions continue through October 10\, 2026. An Opening Reception will be held
  on Friday\, September 11\, 2026\, 6–9 PM at BOX 13 ArtSpace\, 6700 Harr

DESCRIPTION:Don’t Touch the Fire is a multidisciplinary experience bring
ing together fine art\, fashion\, and film. It explores temptation\, desir
e\, and consequence: why we are drawn to things we know may not be good fo
r us\, and why we continue to give in. \nThe entire experience takes place
within the gallery. Guests begin in a standing-room setup and experience
a short film alongside a live gallery installation. Models move through th
e space wearing garments from the collection while installing the artwork
as part of the performance. Fashion becomes an element within the installa
 tion rather than a separate presentation\, allowing film\, fashion\, and f
ine art to come together in real time as the gallery transforms around the
audience. \nAfter the installation\, guests are invited to move freely th
rough the gallery and experience the finished exhibition. They can walk th
rough the space\, sit with the work\, talk\, or take in the environment at
their own pace. Artwork from the exhibition will be available for purchas
