 e. \n \nWriting the Personal Essay \nWhen we write a personal essay\, we e
 stablish a kind of friendship with the reader—an imaginary one\, of cour
 se—which encourages us to open up our internal life as we would when tal
 king to an intimate companion. The genre dares us to be candid\, to air o
 ur doubts\, to hunt down hunches\, to follow the course of our internal de
 bates on the page. We tell the story of thought. \nIn this workshop we’l
 l read and discuss the work of classic and contemporary essayists. In the 
 early weeks\, we’ll do in-class prompts to help us plot out the possible
  directions in which beginnings might take. Later\, participants will pres
 ent their essays-in-progress to the group. The instructor and class member
 s will read them carefully (at least twice) and offer reactions and detail
 ed suggestions.

 esert on a cross-country drive. You get lost in a foreign city and don’t
  speak the local language. You meet up with an online match and go on the 
 worst date of your life. \nWe all have experiences that stick with us and 
 shape who we become. But when we try to tell these stories to our friends\
 , we get blank stares or shrugs. “So what?” they seem to ask. \nDefeat
 ed\, we utter the familiar refrain: “You had to be there.” \nBut what 
 if they didn’t have to be there? What if you could take the strange\, fu
 nny\, painful\, or miraculous experiences of your life and turn them into 
 stories that carry their own meaning? \nIn this workshop\, we’ll shape t
 he raw material of our lives into compelling nonfiction. We’ll consider 
 what makes something a story\, where to begin and end\, what details matte
 r\, how to build tension and momentum\, and how to communicate what an exp
 erience means without simply explaining it. We’ll also explore performan
 ce as a tool for discovering voice\, rhythm\, and pacing. \nThrough writin
 g exercises and workshop feedback\, participants will develop a finished p
 iece of nonfiction that can live on the page or the stage—from a literar
 y publication to The Moth or Houston’s own Grown-up Storytime.

  anxious before anything bad has happened\, and another make us laugh just
  before it hurts? Stories can make us feel tension\, surprise\, intimacy\,
  unease\, and so much more when characters have something to gain\, lose\,
  or protect. Those stakes become meaningful on the page when characters tu
 rn desire into decisive action. \nIn this advanced fiction workshop\, we
 ’ll read stories and novel excerpts by accomplished writers\, then work 
 backward to uncover the craft choices that shaped those decisions. \nWe’
 ll then apply those same methods to our own fiction. Through close reading
 \, character analysis\, discussion\, and generative exercises\, participan
 ts will learn to identify where a story’s emotional effects begin\, stre
 ngthen the chain of choices that drives each scene\, and create consequenc
 es that feel surprising\, inevitable\, and earned. \nParticipants will dra
 ft and revise a story or novel chapter\, receiving feedback that focuses o
 n what each character does\, why they do it now\, and what becomes possibl
 e—or impossible—as a result. \nStudents will leave the class with fict

 oems value incantatory repetition\, while others prefer implication and re
 straint. Some poems relish in lush textures of sound\, while others priori
 tize sharp associative turns. Rather than valorizing one ideal way of maki
 ng a poem\, this class will investigate how poets blend\, layer\, distort\
 , or altogether reject various techniques. \nDuring the course we’ll exp
 lore six poetic modes: profusion\, defiance\, opacity\, association\, dire
 ctness\, and maximalism. Each week\, we’ll experiment with one mode thro

 her writing about intimacy or alienation\, Claudia Rankine possesses a voi

 egraph). A MacArthur Fellow\, Rankine is the author of five collections of
  poetry\, including her bestselling Citizen: An American Lyric\, which exp
 lores what it means to be an American citizen in a “post-racial” socie

  Circle Award\, the NAACP Image Award\, the PEN Open Book Award\, and 
 the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. She is also the author of three plays\,

 culative Fiction: Channeling the Dead\, the Cosmos\, and Everything In-bet
 ween \nWhat if someone invented a machine that let them speak to the dead?
  What if a person’s dreams revealed a political plot to erase an entire 
 neighborhood? What if Texas had never joined the United States? What if ch
 ildren could vote? \n“What if?” is the deceptively simple question at 
 the heart of all speculative fiction. The answers\, however\, can be endle
 ssly complex\, inviting writers to blend genres\, histories\, futures\, an
 d literary traditions—science fiction\, fantasy\, magical realism\, sati
 re\, historical fiction\, horror\, and beyond. \nSome of the most celebrat
 ed writers in American literature have turned to speculative fiction to as
 k profound questions about our place in history\, society\, and the univer
 se. Through readings by authors such as Ray Bradbury\, Mark Twain\, Kurt V
 onnegut\, Octavia E. Butler\, Robert A. Heinlein\, Colson Whitehead\, Ursu
 la K. Le Guin\, Carmen Maria Machado\, Nnedi Okorafor\, R. F. Kuang\, and 
 Cormac McCarthy\, we’ll examine the many forms the speculative can take.

 gas once lived for weeks as a vexed poet. Despite his best attempts\, he c
 ould not shake the flatness in his verse. And so\, desperately inspired\, 
 he sought the advice of a friend: the famed writer Stéphane Mallarmé. 
 “Dear Stéphane\,” Degas began\, “I cannot understand how I can have
  such great ideas—and yet I write such horrid poems!” \nMallarmé quip
 ped\, “Dear Degas\, poems are made of words\, not ideas.” \nIn this ge
 nerative workshop\, we will take Mallarmé’s quip seriously as we consid
 er language as poetic material. We will begin by looking at experimental p
 oems by writers such as Harryette Mullen\, Reginald Dwayne Betts\, Charles
  Olson\, Douglas Kearny\, Robert Smithson\, Ted Berrigan\, and others\, al
 ongside some paintings\, drawings\, and collages by visual artists such as
  Hans Hofmann\, Ray Johnson\, and Josef and Anni Albers. \nAfter discussin
 g the effects of collage\, erasure\, and intertextuality\, we will apply t
 hese crosspollinated-techniques to our own in-class writing. Students can

 g\, or use it as a doorway into something entirely their own. From the anc
 ient Greeks to contemporary poets and essayists\, writers have long turned
  visual art into literary invention. \nAcross three genres—poetry\, flas
 h fiction\, and the short essay—we’ll explore how contemporary writers
  transform a single image into elegy\, argument\, memoir\, and story. Most
  importantly\, we’ll spend time looking closely at works of art that spe
 ak to us and using them as prompts for original writing. Rather than treat
 ing images as subjects to describe\, we’ll approach them as collaborator
 s: something to question\, inhabit\, resist\, and reimagine. By the end of

 rcise to capture the colors\, feelings\, temperatures\, tastes\, plants\, 
 animals\, and images our chosen lines evoke. From there\, we’ll begin ou
 r own poems. \nThroughout the weekend\, we’ll alternate writing with sho
