 ouncil. \nAs British South Asians reel from the riots of summer 2024\, thi
 s book tells the inspirational story of how the community organised agains
 t racism in the past and how it continues to fight in the present. \nBriti
 sh South Asians have a long tradition of radical political activism. The 1
 970s and 1980s saw the community grappling with prejudice in the workplace
  and violence in the streets. But this history is deeper than you might th
 ink\, from students agitating for independence at the heart of the British
  Empire to seafarers organising global strikes on the eve of the Second Wo
 rld War. \nTaj Ali reveals how successive generations fought for rights\, 
 dignity and a sense of belonging while actively shaping the country they n
 ow call home. He shows that British South Asian political life has often b
 een defined less by religious difference than by shared commitments to ant
 i-imperialism and anti-racism. In pursuit of these goals\, alliances have 
 been forged with other movements\, from Irish republicanism to Black Power
 . \nAs racism rears its ugly head again\, ‘Come What May\, We’re Here 
 to Stay’ asks are we are doomed to repeat the past or will we learn from
  our mistakes and build a better world together? \nTaj Ali is a journalist
  and historian. He is the former editor of Tribune and regularly appears a
 s a commentator on the BBC\, as well as contributing to the Guardian\, Al 
 Jazeera English and others. For his work on hate crime and Islamophobia he
  was chosen as a finalist for the 2026 Orwell Prize.

DESCRIPTION:Working with the music collection\, and tapping into the GWL 
 ‘hive mind’\, artist Ruth Ewan has been researching the rich social an
 d political histories contained in song. She has brought a collection of t
 hese materials together to form A Feminist Jukebox of People Trying to Cha
 nge the World for everyone at GWL to enjoy. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate this work
  and the culmination of the We Make Museums: Sustaining and Changing World
 s exhibition we have invited selected artists featured in the Jukebox\, 
 for a one off eclectic afternoon of live music and song spanning centurie
 s of lyrical feminist storytelling. We’re delighted to confirm that Debb
 ie Armour (Burd Ellen)\, Frankie Armstrong\, Rubie and Farzane Zaman will 
 all be performing a live specially curated selection of songs alongside th
 eir contributions to the Jukebox. There will also be refreshments and ligh
 t snacks and a last chance to see Ruth’s artwork alongside the other bea
 utiful exhibits created by Sohaila Baluch and Alixandra Prybyla with an ar
 ray of collaborators. \n\n\n\nThis event is kindly supported by The Paul H
 amlyn Foundation \n\n\n\nAbout the artists\n\n\n\nDebbie Armour. Photo by 
 Amelia Reid\n\n\n\n   Debbie Armour is a traditional singer     and artist
 . She uses British and international traditional song as a foundation to b
 uild conceptual works and explore tradition in a contemporary setting. Deb
 bie has recently completed residencies and commissions for hcmf//\, Bothy
  Project and Scottish International Storytelling Festival. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n

 ng professionally in the folk scene and the women’s’ peace movements s
 ince the 1960s.  She pioneered community voice workshops in 1975 being fa
 scinated by the way that voice can enhance the individual’s sense of wel
 l-being and also develop a sense of community. Frankie has made 12 solo al
 bums\, as well as featuring on numerous shared recordings and has written

 ubie is a musician based in Glasgow. Her glam inflected\, alt-pop songwrit
 ing paints vivid pictures of the present apocalypse\, political struggles 
 and queer mutual aid networks. She also works as a composer\, sound design
 er\, and tours playing keyboards with songwriter Jacob Alon. \n\n\n\nFarza
 ne Zamen. Photo by Najma Abukar.\n\n\n\nFarzane Zamen is a music producer\
 , guitarist and songwriter from Iran who is based in Glasgow. As a co-wor
 ker at Glasgow Women’s Library\, she was helping with the installation o
 f Ruth Ewan’s exhibition when she was invited to share one of her songs 
 to be added to the exhibition’s jukebox. She chose a protest song she ha
 d recently written\, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the brutal
  massacre in Iran in January 2026. \n\n\n\nRuth Ewan cleaning a record\n\n
 \n\nAbout the artistRuth Ewan is an artist whose varied works encompass in
 stallation\, writing\, creating environments\, events and objects. She wor
 ks with found materials\, archives and collaborators to produce research-b
 ased artworks\, working in response to site\, context and communities. Her
  works explore alternative systems of knowledge and creativity as a tool f
 or social and environmental justice. Her project\, A Feminist Jukebox of P
 eople Trying to Change the World\, developed for Glasgow Women’s Library
 \, presents an interactive vinyl jukebox containing popular and lesser kno
 wn songs\, recorded over the last 100 years\, which foreground female live

 Glasgow Green.\n\n\n\nOur sell out women’s heritage walks\, led by our v
 olunteer tour guides\, show Glasgow’s neighbourhoods in a new light\, ma
 king visible the often hidden and overlooked contributions women have made
  to the city.  \n\n\n\nThis guided walk will focus on some of the achieve
 ments and struggles of the industrious and resourceful women of Glasgow’
 s East End\, and the radical nature of the area which gave birth to them.
  You’ll learn about the women of the Templeton factory\, the suffragett
 es\, the brazen women of Glasgow Green\, Battling Betty\, the woman who se
 t up the Barras and many\, many more! \n\n\n\nGet a flavour of the remarka
