She was a colonial subject and Pan-Africanist w ho pushed against entrenched cultural prejudices to develop a legendary br oadcasting presence. Despite her remarkable accomplishments\, her dismissa l by the BBC left her sidelined and forgotten. This talk will use textual analysis with grounded theory to examine data that traced Marson’s profe ssional experiences. Articles\, books\, audiovisual materials\, and intern al BBC memos are reviewed to establish a contextual narrative of Marson’ s tenure at the BBC. The analysis suggests scholars pursuing a comprehensi ve understanding of the contributions of Black pioneers should interrogate the nuances of their private struggles and the implications of their pers onal losses. This year we’re inviti ng Joy Gregory\, an award winning visual artist\, photographer and educato r known for her thoughtful work connecting image making with identity\, cu lture\, language and history. Joy is the editor of Shining Lights (2024)\, an anthology of Black British women’s photography from the 1980s and 19 90s\, originally conceived in 1987\, which led to her first encounter with Maud.  \n\n\n\nA graduate of Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal Colleg e of Art\, Joy has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally\, p articipating in numerous biennales and festivals. Her work is held in majo r public and private collections\, including the Victoria and Albert Museu m\, the UK Government Art Collection\, the Institute of Modern Art\, Brisb ane\, and Yale University. \n\n\n\nJoy was the recipient of the 2023 Freel ands Award. Her major retrospective\, Catching Flies with Honey\, opened at the Whitechapel Gallery in October 2025\, accompanied by a publication of the same title. The exhibition is currently touring and will open at Ar nolfini in October 2026 as part of the Bristol Festival of Photography. \n \n\n\nShe is also the editor of Shining Lights\, an anthology of Black Br itish women’s photography from the 1980s and 1990s\, published by MACK i n collaboration with Autograph. The project was originally conceived in 19 87 with Araba Mercer. Researching and assembling the images for the book l ed to Joy’s first encounter with Maud Sulter\, who was already making a significant impact as a confident and formidable presence in the art world .
