  of Narrow Endemics” presented by Florida International University Resea
 rch Assistant Professor & Curator\, Dr. Andre Naranjo. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegiste
 r\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe scrub mint clade is a set of closely related plants 
 found almost entirely in the North American Coastal Plain. Many species o
 ccur only in Florida and nearby areas\, where they grow in sandy habitats 
 like scrub and sandhills. Because most species are rare or endangered\, un
 derstanding how they evolved and where they occur is important for conserv
 ation. DNA data from all 24 species were used to build a family tree showi
 ng how these plants are related. The group appears to have originated in 
 the Florida Panhandle\, especially around the Apalachicola River region\, 
 and began diversifying about 2.5 million years ago. Modeling of past and p
 resent habitats suggests these plants have long been associated with the G
 ulf Coast\, even as climates changed. Areas with especially high numbers 
 of unique species include the Apalachicola region and the Atlantic Coastal
  Ridge. Looking ahead\, climate models suggest that about 63% of scrub min
 t species may lose suitable habitat\, especially those in peninsular Flori
 da\, highlighting the need for targeted conservation efforts. \n\n\n\n\n\n
 Dr. Andre Naranjo with Longspur balm (Dicerandra cornutissima).\n\n\n\n\n\
 nPresenter: \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Naranjo’s research focuses on the phylogenet
 ics\, biogeography and conservation of plants in the North American Coasta
 l Plain and Caribbean biodiversity hotspots. His work integrates evolution
 ary biology\, ecological modeling and botanical collections to better unde
 rstand the origins and preservation of tropical and subtropical plant dive
 rsity. He is also dedicated to science outreach and mentorship\, engaging 
 primary\, secondary and undergraduate students to increase awareness of en
 dangered ecosystems and species throughout South Florida and the broader C
 aribbean region. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar

 irst event in this monthly series\, we will gather at the Evergreen Cemete
 ry Native Plant Garden to show it some love and help it thrive. \n\n\n\nWh
 en and where: Meet us at Evergreen Cemetery (401 SE 21st Ave\, Gainesville
 \, FL 32641) at 9:00 am. We will work until 11:00 am or until we have fini
 shed with our tasks. \n\n\n\nWhat to expect: You can expect light yardwork
  tasks like weeding\, adding mulch\, and watering. You can also expect to
  be in community with other like-minded folks\, learning more about native
  plants as you help a garden thrive. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: Be sure to wea
 r close-toe shoes and long pants. Bring water\, snacks\, bug spray\, sunsc
 reen and a hat. Bring your own gloves and gardening tools if you have them
 \, but we will have a limited amount of both to share too.

 r will take us through sandhill units burned earlier this season\, and wil
 l be bursting with fall color. Conservation Steward Grace Howell will lead
  a guided\, open-air tram tour\, stopping along the way to admire a wide d
 iversity of blooming grasses\, legumes\, asters and more\, all beneath a s
 tunning canopy of Longleaf pine. Highlights include Garberia (Garberia het
 erophylla)\, Azure blue sage (Salvia azurea)\, Crownbeard (Verbesina heter
