DESCRIPTION:For nearly a century\, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art has
provided students\, faculty\, and the broader community opportunities to c
onnect with works of art across time periods and cultures. Initially found
ed in 1933 as an Asian art museum with the generous donation of Gertrude B
ass Warner’s collection of over 3\,700 works of art\, the museum’s col
lecting interests have since broadened to artworks from around the world t
hat provide even more opportunities for cross-cultural and curricular conn
ections. JSMA began collecting American and regional art in the 1960s\, an
d now stewards work by artists from the United States\, Mesoamerica\, cont
emporary Mexico\, Cuba\, Puerto Rico\, and other areas of the Caribbean an
d across the Americas. With our recent acquisitions\, the museum aims to r
eflect the voices and experiences of diverse audiences and the new and evo
lving ideas\, insights\, and conversations presented by artists in work th
at both shapes and responds to culture.\n\nCollecting America: Recent Acqu
isitions presents a selection of artworks from the museum’s permanent co
llection that demonstrate our commitment to understandings of American art
informed by perspectives from local\, national\, and internationally reco
gnized artists. Through various materials and practices\, the featured art
ists demonstrate the great diversity of art made in or in response to the
United States of America. These works invite viewers to participate in con
versations on identity\, place\, politics\, and other issues facing our wo
rld today.\n\nThis exhibition is organized by JSMA executive director Oliv
ia Miller and curators Katie Loney\, Danielle Knapp\, and Thom Sempere\, w
ith graduate student interns Aidyn Dervaes (MA candidate\, History of Art
and Architecture)\, Parisa Garazhian (MFA candidate\, Studio Art)\, and Lo
rna Isaacson (MA candidate\, History of Art and Architecture).

DESCRIPTION:Navigating Through Centuries surveys the complex trajectory of
art in Korea\, which was significantly impacted by socio-political upheav
al and cultural developments from the fifth century to the present. The ex
hibition is comprised of six chronological thematic sections — from the
power and religion of the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE)\, to the
refined aristocratic ideals of the Goryeo (918–1392) and Confucian gove
rnance of the Joseon (1392–1910) dynasties\, through vestiges of traditi
on after the Korean War (1950–1953)\, experimental practices during the
modern era\, and globalization of contemporary art. Each section examines
how aesthetic practices respond to the evolving philosophies\, ideologies\
, critical events\, and issues of a specific historical period.\n\n The
exhibition begins with materials from the Three Kingdoms period in which
are embedded political/religious authority and communal rituals\, laying t
he foundation for Korean cultural memory. The Goryeo dynasty section highl
ights the refined aesthetics and Buddhist motifs that reflect aristocratic
ideals and literati culture\, while also indicating Korea’s participati
on in East Asian cultural exchange. The Joseon section showcases art that
embodies the Confucian literati values that fundamentally shaped the moral
order\, governance\, and cultural life of the period.\n\n The modern a
nd contemporary sections focus on twentieth-century art\, which has contin
ually questioned\, responded to\, and been shaped by the last tumultuous c
entury of Korean history. The first postwar section features art that port
rays the remnants of indigenous culture in the aftermath of the Korean War
. The next section presents experimental works by artists who challenged t
he canon of art by blurring boundaries of cultures\, genres\, and mediums.
The final section showcases global contemporary art by diasporic creators
\, many of whom have played central roles in integrating Korean art into t
he international mainstream.\n\n Navigating Through Centuries narrates
the conflicted yet intertwined relationships between art and culture\, ind
ividuals and communities\, and socio-politics and history\, inviting audie
nces to consider the broad history of Korea through the lens of art. The e
xhibition was curated by Soojin Jeong\, 2023–2026 Post-Graduate Curatori
al Fellow in East Asian Art\, as well as Heejung Chang\, 2025–2026 JSMA/
Korea Foundation Global Challengers Museum Intern.

DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey Gibson: They Teach Love presents a survey of 20 artwor
ks by Jeffrey Gibson (American\, b. 1972)\, one of today’s foremost cont
emporary artists\, curated exclusively from the collections of Jordan D. S
chnitzer and his family foundation. Gibson\, who is of Mississippi Choctaw
and Cherokee heritage\, combines aspects of Indigenous art and culture wi
th modernist traditions\, navigating and disrupting the expectations place
d upon Native artists working within the contemporary art world. By unitin
 g sculpture\, paintings\, prints\, and video with elk hides\, tipi poles\,
wool blankets\, beadwork\, and fringe\, Gibson celebrates the artistry of
Indigenous cultures. He adorns and converts utilitarian items (including
punching bags\, flags\, banners\, and illuminated signs) to art objects th
at vibrate with spiritual power\, carrying his belief that objects\, and p
eople alike\, have the potential for radical transformation.\n\nThe exhibi
tion’s centerpiece is an expansive and immersive work titled To Name An
Other (2019) comprised of 51 screen printed elk hide drums and 50 wearable
garments. Originally commissioned as a performance by the Smithsonian’s
National Portrait Gallery\, To Name An Other marks a turning point in the
artist’s career whereby Gibson has increasingly sought out collective-b
ased projects and performances to activate the communities within which he
works. Collaboration is at the heart of his recent social practice. Worki
ng and learning together may aid in decolonizing minds and institutions\,
revealing a future we wish to inhabit. In 2024\, Gibson was selected as th
e first Indigenous artist to represent the US Pavilion with a solo present
ation at the Venice Biennale\, further demonstrating how his vibrant and p
owerful voice continues to broaden the view of American art history\, cont
emporary times\, and our future.\n\nJeffrey Gibson: They Teach Love – Fr
om the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation was cu
rated by Ryan Hardesty\, Executive Director and Curator of Exhibitions and
Collections\, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art\, Washington State Universit

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Leading the Camino: Latinx Art by Juan de Dios
Mora and Consuelo Jimenez Underwood\, features prints and textiles by Mora
and Jimenez Underwood that question borders and embrace living in the “
borderlands.” Mora adopts figuration and humor to resist homogenization
and contest political rhetoric that criminalizes immigrants. He employs Sp
anglish and popular motifs such as piñatas\, luchadores masks\, and Mesoa
merican iconography to reflect his lived experiences and connect cultures
across time and space. In his print Leading the Camino Maya and Aztec symb
ols are juxtaposed with tacos and technology exemplifying Gloria Anzaldúa
’s notion of the borderlands or sites where a variety of traditions\, la
nguages\, and ways of being come into contact\, overlapping and interactin
g\, to nourish and inform each other. Jimenez Underwood embraces textiles
to similarly cross borders and honor her hybrid identity as Chicana\, Mexi
cana\, Americana\, Indigenous\, woman\, and artist. Her artworks bridge ar
t and craft to examine geo-political barriers and weave together bodies an
d traditions from past and present.\n\nThe exhibition is curated by Adrian
a Miramontes Olivas\, Curator of Academic Programs and Latin American and
 Caribbean Art.
