Rice on Wednesday\, September 9th at the WOW Hall. \n  \n \n\nJohnny Burgin \nJohnny’s known as road warrior w ho’s on tour close to 200 nights a year across the States\, in Mexico an d Europe.  But if you’d told him this would be his career when he was i n High School\,  he wouldn’t have believed you.  Johnny grew up in Mis sissippi and South Carolina and went to University of Chicago with the int ention of becoming a writer.  When a friend took him out to a West Side g hetto club to hear the blues singer Tail Dragger\, it was a conversion mom ent.  The blues came to life for Johnny and he fell headfirst into the vi brant Chicago blues scene.  Choosing the blues clubs over the library\, J ohnny eagerly absorbed the lessons from the blues masters who practiced th eir craft nightly.  By persistence and practice\, Johnny gained a spot in Tail Dragger’s band\, and started gigging and recording with  traditio nal blues veterans like Sam Lay\, Billy Boy Arnold\, and Pinetop Perkin s.   By the late 90s\, Johnny was working regularly in Chicagoland blues clubs under his own name.  Johnny started a Monday night residency at Th e Smoke Daddy in Wicker Park\, featuring vocalist Jimmy Burns.  The band featured other future blues notables who were also at beginning of their c areers\, such as Kenny Smith on drums and Martin Lang on harp\, and th ey created quite a buzz.  They packed the club every Monday with a younge r\, hip crowd\, as well as blues veterans stopping by to sit in such as D ave Meyers\, Jesse Fortune\, Barkin’ Bill\, etc.  Their success led t o a record deal with Delmark and the first of several European tours. \nTh e shangri-la of being “King of Division Street” eventually ran its cou rse.  In the early aughts\, Johnny dropped off the scene entirely to rais e a daughter.   When the music eventually called Johnny back\, his comeb ack was noted by The Chicago Tribune\, Chicago Blues Guide\, and the Dut ch blues magazine BLOCK.  As noted blues producer Dick Shurman wrote\, “Johnny’s skills\, passion and commitment were undiminished.”   Hi s move to the Bay Area in 2016 led to a creative burst and his most notabl e recordings.  In a few short years\, Johnny cranked out the Cali/Chicago blues mashups Greetings from Greaseland\,  Neoprene Fedora\, the Howlin ’ Wolf tribute Howlin’ at Greaseland (nominated for a BMA for Best T raditional Blues Recording) and Johnny Burgin Live\, which featured blues legend Charlie Musselwhite and was nominated for a Blues Blast Best Live R ecording Award for 2019.   Johnny had always done road work\, but during this time\, he grew into the role of the constantly touring road warrior he’s known as today. \nJohnny’s produced eleven CDs as a leader to his credit and dozens more as a sideman.  He’s recorded with veterans like  Johnny Sansone\,  Paul DeLay\, Bob Corritore\, and Jimmy Burns as w ell as up and comers like Aki Kumar\, Joel Astley\, and Ben Levin.  Jo hnny’s developed from a young guitar slinger and local blues hero to a m atured bluesman\, fully fledged singer and the confident and engaging band leader.  In recent years\, he has been a resident instructor at the Pine top Perkins Foundation and the Chicago Blues Guitar Workshop and has de veloped a loyal following on YouTube channel for his weekly looks at the blues guitar greats.   Johnny’s recordings have evolved from being ve ry Chicago-centric\, to a fusion of West Coast and Chicago styles\, and fi nally\,to a more inclusive\, international approach.  His CD No Border B lues Japan is the first American Aki Kumar left his home in Mumbai for the USA with the intention of wor king as a software engineer. Then he discovered the blues\, and his life c hanged dramatically. Kumar quickly steeped himself in the genre and became a fixture in blues clubs throughout Northern California\, honing his stag e chops and ultimately developing his visionary “Bollywood Blues” soun d. \nToday\, this harmonica player\, soulful vocalist\, band-leader\, drum mer and producer is one of the most prolific artists in the SF Bay Area. A veteran of the San Jose music scene for two decades\, Kumar has been hai led as “…King of ‘Bollywood blues’ music” by SJ Mercury News (20 22) and received the Metro Silicon Valley Gold Award for Best Band (2024). \nWhen he first began performing\, Kumar attempted to downplay his ethnic ity and only performed straight\, Chicago-style blues. “I wanted to make a statement that I was a traditional blues musician\, so I wanted to be p laying blues and have nobody even wonder where I came from.” Kumar’s d ebut album “Don’t Hold Back” (2014) was hailed as “one of the best new artist new releases of 2014” (Blues Blast Magazine) and showcases h is classic blues stylings. We hopped the train from Connecticut to Grand Central and mad e our way to the Garden. It is an album that finds the group\, Dana and Alden McWayne\ , stepping into their creative ambitions with a boldness and sensitivity l ike never before. \nOver 2023’s Quiet Music For Young People and 2025’ s Speedo\, Dana and Alden established an eclectic\, genre-agnostic sound d rawn from their omnivorous musical upbringing — built on Dana’s saxoph one and Alden’s drums\, rooted in jazz\, but pulling strains from indie\ , pop\, rap\, funk\, and more. \nThat musical wanderlust is something they credit to their maternal grandfather. Affectionately known as Papa\, he w as the kind of person others naturally gravitate towards. Always an eccent ric\, he was a retired engineer involved in manufacturing the first Fairch ild semiconductors and a recreational sailor. It was a photograph from one of his trips to Asia that inspired “Papa’s Boat.” In the image Papa is wearing tattered jorts and looking out across the horizon. Next to him is his boat\, named Sŵn y Môr after the Welsh translation of “Sound o f the Sea.” \nThe result is an album that escapes landlocked rigidity fo r something more open\, free\, and expressive. An album in Papa’s image. \nRecorded in London in March 2025\, “Papa’s Boat” combines all the ir childhood love and global experience to create an ecstatic sound built on Dana’s saxophone and Alden’s drums\, rooted in jazz but pulling inf luence from indie\, pop\, rap\, bossa nova\, and beyond. Beginning with a hypnotic combination of sax and buzzing synths on “Lighthouse” the alb um immediately feels bracing and alive. Guest vocalist Ebba Dankel\, one o f many friends that appear during the album\, places herself by the shore as she sings: “I met you at a lighthouse. Now I never see your eyes. I ’m back on the East Coast. Nothing feels the same.” It sets the tone f or an album that uses water as both a reflective surface and a body to get lost in. \n“Papa was a really special guy\,” Dana explains. “I thin k so much of what Alden and I are doing comes from just watching him live his own unique life.” Alden agrees. “His emboldened\, passionate perso nality gave us permission to be our own selves\, to be unconventional and draw outside of the box.” \nIn addition to travelling\, Papa was also a keen linguist and would encourage his grandsons to learn Spanish. After he passed away the brothers travelled to Nicaragua and Uruguay\, picking up the language as they made their way through the Americas. “We made a lot of friends and learned the value of cultural exchange\,” Dana says. “ It felt like we were really carrying on his legacy in those travels. And i n this album\, too.” \nDana and Alden travelled to London after becoming friends with drummer Yussef Dayes. Longtime fans of the U.K. jazz scene\, namedropping Gilles Peterson\, Shabaka\, and Nubya Garcia as influences\, they were then welcomed into sessions at Malcolm Catto’s Quatermass Sou ndlab studio in Hackney. “We went down there and then I think we all jus t collectively got goosebumps\,” Alden recalls of the unsuspecting basem ent space which contains a bounty of jazz history hidden beneath a communi ty centre hosting fitness classes. “We literally played for maybe eight hours straight\,” says Dana. “Malcolm would just go into his control r oom and record through his old broadcast desk and he’d come out once in a while and say\, ‘Keep doing more of that.” \n“Lighthouse” opens the album with a jolt\, charting an unpredictable path over the course of the rest of the album\, mirroring the spontaneity that world travel can br ing. The subdued and intimate “Trick Dog” settles the waters before un leashing “Summer Nights\,” a carefree roller that captures the vibe of a party when the air is warm and time seems to last forever. “We immedi ately felt it was a song that would be played at a roller skating rink\, ” Dana says. “We wanted it to feel like a sunny day. We’re just groo ving on it.” They called in friends from Brooklyn’s Frontyard FM crew to join the party and add vocals. It’s a moment of unbridled collective joy on an album that places community and tactile connection above all els e. \nThe circle of friends on “Papa’s Boat” includes new faces and o ld. The duo’s backing band\, Ebba Dankel (vocals and keys)\, Andrew Mitc hell (bass)\, Eli Torgersen (vocals and guitar) and Salim Charvet (sax and synths) appear throughout as key voices on the album. Mei Semones\, a fri end of Alden’s from Berklee\, studs her feather lite vocals into their p sychedelic jazz sky on “Lee’s Greenhouse” while longtime collaborato r Cinya Khan appears on “inthistogether.” There are also two collabora tions with Marcos Valle. The legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter appears on both “El Gaucho” and “Friendship Is A Boat” “He has been one of our musical heroes since we were 12 years old\,” Dana says. “We wo rked on this apple orchard in Oregon for this farmer named Tom\, who was o bsessed with Brazilian music and Marcos Valle. He would just ride around o n his tractor every day and come back and show us the new albums he had fo und. Both of the songs are really just a dream come true.” \nThroughout its runtime “Papa’s Boat” sails purposefully between memories of the past and visions of a brighter future\, an album fully cognisant of the j ourneys\, music and loved ones that have shaped its creation. Accompanied by a monumental short film directed by Ha rrison Shook and set to be unleashed in June 2024\, this collection – ti tled “Together We Are One\, You And I\,” – wanders through the depth s of human suffering and emerges resilient.
