From street corners to theaters\, singing was the only language t heir heart knew. After years of wild and beautiful chaos on the road\, Fel icia now calls Eugene\, OR home\, where they live with their wife\, co-par ent\, and beloved 3-year-old child. The title track of the T urnover’s new album\, Myself in the Way\, speaks to this mindset. “I c an’t put myself in the way of love again\,” sings Getz\, “I promise I’m going to go all the way with you\,” is specifically about Getz get ting engaged to his longtime partner\, but applies to the general outlook he had toward life in lockdown. “I was living in Sebastopol\, California at the time and felt like I truly lived there for the first time since I wasn’t leaving for tour. I was able to go meditate at the Zen Buddhist d ojo down the road\, run and bike around the hills in Sonoma county\, learn about plants and gardening\, take some Spanish and arboriculture classes\ , and get involved with the volunteer fire department. Just do a bunch of new things to challenge and inspire me in a natural way.” \nTurnover’s other members also used the time to deepen interests they hadn’t been a ble to fully explore before covid. Bass player Dan Dempsey was in New York City and responded to lockdown by spending more time practicing his visua l art in drawing and painting. He painted the album’s cover during this period and developed a style that has become a central theme for the band in its current iteration. Drummer Casey Getz found work at a Virginia Beac h state park as touring continued to be postponed. He was in search of and inspired by having a work-life balance different than he’d experienced since he was younger. Through this\, he was able to nurture current relati onships more and find new ones\, something touring made much more difficul t. This led to Casey playing drums with a group of longtime friends in Vir ginia Beach and further developing his drumming style – adding a new pro wess for fluidity and improvisation through lengthy jam sessions with the group. Guitarist Nick Rayfield was focused on sharpening his guitar and pi ano playing and was able to devote energy to skateboarding and his retail business more than he had been able to for the last few years. This was al so the band’s first album with Rayfield making songwriting contributions after touring with them for years as a live member\, adding a new creativ e element to the songs. \nOver 18 months Turnover weaved these individual experiences into a collective work\, recording the LP over two sessions wi th longtime collaborator Will Yip at Studio 4. Austin is credited\, for th e first time\, as co-producer. \n“I had specific ideas for sound design on this album. I knew a lot of sounds I wanted to hear and use. We wanted everything to be able to be heard and have its own place. I was inspired b y the way Magical Mystery Tour and Dark Side of the Moon sounded. We decid ed to go a lot wider with it and utilize panning and stereo more than we h ad in the past\, while also wanting it to sound tighter and smaller than s ome of our earlier records. We were inspired by drum and bass sounds from Chic and Quincy Jones records from the 70s\, so we put the drums in the co ntrol room to get them to sound smaller. We used an active pickup bass and a jazz bass to get that percussive sound from the bass so the low end was n’t as rumbling and subby. We let the synths share some of that low end that the drums and bass gave up. Quincy’s approach to arrangements were a huge inspiration in this record as well. The horn and string lines I wan ted to sound like classic era disco\, mixed with modern synth and vocal so unds. I had been experimenting with my own vocal styles a lot and utilized autotune and vocoder on this album almost as instruments on certain songs as a stylistic choice.” \nThe band has always been DIY\, but post pande mic they have taken that to a different level. They appreciate more than e ver how lucky they are to get to be together and have fun creating things with their friends. They have found that they are usually best suited for executing their own vision\, not only musically\, but with all its accompa niments as well. For this album they made all their own videos in collabor ation with friends and using Dempsey’s drawings and paintings. \nChange is authentic and true to Turnover as a band and as individuals. Chart a co urse through their discography and find a band continually reinventing the mselves with a unique artistic ambition. Myself In The Way arrives finding Turnover doing the same within their own persons\, pushing the band into new and exciting parallel depths of expression. \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n\nOP ENER: Narrow Head  \n \nTruly great pop songs do not require a cheery out look in order to work\, nor do they pander to expectations of syrupy sweet easy-listening. Rather\, the best pop music is a matter of refinement and pure intention\, of dialing groove to melody so that the two might punctu re the malaise of everyday living in unison\, revealing some brief\, sober truth about our shared human condition. On their third LP\, Moments of Cl arity (Run for Cover)\, Narrow Head have achieved precisely this feat. Tra versing the depths of massive\, churning riffs\, often distorted to the po int of violence\, bouncing\, lock-grooved rhythms\, and crystalline\, gorg eously constructed hooks\, the Houston-based outfit puts on a masterclass in the art of writing songs that match the pain\, pleasure\, and confusion of modern living. Eith er way it’s always the house-party-meets-library that is\, Kevin Russell . \nRaised in Beaumont\, TX\, and Shreveport\, LA—the cradle of swamp po p\, Leadbelly\, and bayou R&B—Russell distills those regional sounds int o something both timeless and immediate\, dripping from his fingers like h oney\, salt & fat. Think Texas Gulf Coast meets Muscle Shoals\, songs carv ed and weaved by hand with a storyteller’s heart. \nShinyribs evolved fr om a solo residency Russell began under that moniker in the mid-2000s\, af ter an incident in a Houston club\, playing a private party for a group of welders where he bought a homeless woman a plate of ribs. “Her name was Roberta\,” says Russell. “She was a high priestess of transistor radi os and an almost forgotten music she called ‘Chilibump.’ For that plat e of Ribs that night she gave me in return a name\, Shinyribs and a road m ap to the mysterious big thicket sounds I had only heard of from old timer s and time travelers.” \nWith Leaving Time produced by David Beck (Texan Weekend\, Blue Healer)\, Russell parks the party bus behind the venue and sits in a lawn chair in the street lights with the bugs and a dingy moon. That’s the harsh truth with which the Dinosaur Pile-Up frontman has wrestled since losing his father suddenly a t eight years of age\, the stark reality that shook him into picking up a guitar and chasing his rock star dreams in the first place. Because tomorr ow is never guaranteed. When ulcerative colitis left Matt in critical care in early 2021\, however\, he began to think again about what it’s reall y all about. \n“You think you’re halfway through life\, then you reali se you might be right at the end\,” he smiles\, today. “Being in that room was scary. I felt incredibly vulnerable. I had no control. But hearin g people in the final hours of their lives forced me to think about what w ould happen if I were to die. What was I leaving behind? It’s ba rnstorming highlight My Way that fully reignites the swagger of 2019 smash single Back Foot\, though\, with a hip hop-inflected ode to staying true to oneself and staying angry at a twisted modern music industry that crimi nally underpays its creatives: ‘ If you spin this track twenty million t imes / Then I maybe make a buck / I can use that to buy my groceries\, luc ky I don’t eat a lot…’ \nFlash back to 2018. Ten years of chasing op portunity and betting big on every chance had built Dinosaur Pile-Up into one of the most beloved alt. rock bands in the UK. It had also left them f lat broke\, physically and mentally drained\, and without a label to relea se imminent fourth album Celebrity Mansions. Between Matt\, bassist Jim Cr atchley and drummer Mike Sheils it was agreed that Celebrity… would be m ake-or-break. Failure would mean calling it quits. The rock gods were smil ing\, though\, as DPU signed to Parlophone less than a month out of the st udio for a summer 2019 release\, lining up major festival dates and North American support slots with The Offspring and Sum 41 through to the end of the year. They were soaring – until COVID stalled the world…. \n“20 20 looked like it was going to be an insane year\,” Matt sighs\, ruefull y. “To have that taken from us was a real kick in the nuts. We were on t his amazing upward trajectory. And it was just reset.” Little did he kno w that it was about to be reset again – and again. Already diagnosed wit h Crohn’s disease\, Matt’s immunosuppressant steroid treatments meant his lockdown was subject to strict self-isolation\, further battering thre adbare physical and mental health. Striking up a relationship online with Karen Dió of Brazilian punks Violet Soda was a shard of gold in a sea of grey. Her UK visit in October 2020 one of the few moments of real relief. Maddeningly\, Matt’s trip to her South American homeland at New Year’s 2021 would be cut short: worsening health forcing a return to the UK and setting him on a lonely spiral towards some of the darkest days of his ent ire life. \n“People don’t relate things like health crises with being a dude in a band\,” he stresses the sense of isolation that came with th e ordeal. “We’re more associated with rocking out and having a great t ime – even more so with today’s Instagram culture. At my lowest point\ , I couldn’t have felt further from being that dude onstage playing a bi g crowd. That was difficult to rationalise. I was skin and bones\, wrecked \, feeling like I was going to die\, wondering what had to me happened and why.” Unwilling to portray an image that didn’t truly reflect what he was going through\, Matt dropped off social media entirely. It added anot her level of separation from the outside world\, most of whom had no idea the nightmare he was living. February 2021 was the first time he’d been admitted to hospital\, a stay cut short due to a lack of beds. “I was se nt home with permission to self-administer morphine\,” he crumples his b row. “It felt dangerous. I could have killed myself with that syringe. ” \nThe rapid weight-loss\, internal bleeding and proliferation of sores in his mouth and over his body continued to grow worse. Readmission to ho spital was the only option. There were endless blood-tests. Sections of hi s tongue were removed for investigation – while he was conscious. Most u nnervingly\, the doctors seemed to be panicking\, unable to stop his throa t collapsing in on itself. \n“I remember being taken out in a wheelchair for an X-ray at one point\,” Matt recalls. “The orderly left me alone in the corridor on my way there and I realised how few people knew where I was or understood the out-of-control the situation I was in. So I called my UK manager Adam to chat. As soon as he picked up I just broke down. I had no idea what was happening\, or what would happen next. It was the fir st time I’d cried in years. He cried\, too\, which really brought the si tuation home.” \nRather than wallowing in self-pity\, Matt found enlight enment in the deepest shadow. “Lying in that hospital bed\, my prioritie s shifted. I realised that the most important thing in my life was spendin g time with the people I love. Nothing else mattered. It was a kind of ego -death. I was lying there with people who were on the same plane as me one moment\, and the next they were leaving it. I was freaking out about my o wn mortality\, but also thinking ‘Wow\, that’s it for them…’ Getti ng famous? Being cool? None of it seemed significant after that. Strutting around backstage at festivals like a dick was no longer on my list of pri orities. I’m not sure how important all that other ‘band stuff’ ever was to me\, but from then all I cared about was making music and living m y life.” \nRecovery was not a straight line. Neither was picking up agai n with Dinosaur Pile-Up. Return shows at Reading & Leeds 2021 saw Matt sti ll swollen from the massive Methylprednisolone dose that had gotten him ou t of hospital. Their long-delayed Kentish Town Forum headline on March 23r d\, 2022 was more impactful. Recording was completed piece-by-piece when M att was fit\, with four producers – trusted friend Larry Hibbitt\, Swedi sh master Martin Terefe\, American songwriter Scott Stevens\, Hastings’ Mike Horner – across a total of six studios between May 2022 and late 20 24. DPU would change record-deal\, too\, when restructuring saw many of th eir most vocal champions at Parlophone move on\, and they amicably jumped to renowned independent label Mascot. \n“Time gives you perspective\,” Matt smiles. “I normally take a ‘long time’ to make a record\, but that means between two and four months. This has been years. In his book T he Creative Act\, Rick Rubin explains that the first time you really hear a song is when you play it to someone else. I had that opportunity on repe at here\, and these songs are extremely well honed. Plus\, hearing how the y sound essentially the same no matter where I’m recording – with diff erent gear\, in different studios – has underlined that I’m really dri ving the ship. It was a challenge mentally\, physically and literally. I e ffectively recorded that record three times. But I’m so proud of how it turned out.” \nThe finished article speaks for itself. Matt relishes the “power in positivity” of larger-than-life bangers like Big Dogs – a gleeful takedown of ass-backwards celebrity freebie culture where the ric hest and most successful always ‘eat for free’ while needy nobodies sc rabble for scraps. That promise was fulfilled in April 2022\, and a thread of rom ance runs from their partnership through the heart of the record. Punk Kis s\, for instance\, started out as a portrait of kids having fun at DPU’s 2016 tour with Basement\, but metamorphosed into a tribute to the teenage longing we’ve all felt for the girls (and guys) at the rock show. Quasi modo Melonheart casts Matt (always self-conscious about his stooped postur e) as the lovelorn hunchback chasing his fair maiden\, with elaborate inst rumentation worthy of Notre Dame and guest vocals from Karen herself. Best of all\, Love’s The Worst wrings arena-ready pop-punk triumph from the pain and anger of being cheated on in a previous relationship that had to die for his true love to flourish. \nUltimately\, this album seeing the li ght of day is a huge part of Matt’s happily ever after. The initial production of the song took place at Matte Blvck’s s tudio in San Diego. In the wake of sudden loss – a moment\, a person\, a way of being brought violently to an end – the th ing lost is gone but not its outline\, a strange unstable place in which f esters all manner of strange unstable thinking. The rules of reality tempo rarily subside\, and mourning makes of the world a negative space. \nPlung ed without warning into that space\, Sleater-Kinney returns with Little Ro pe\, one of the finest\, most delicately layered records in the band’s n early 30-year career. To call the album flawless feels like an insult to i ts intent – it careens headfirst into flaw\, into brokenness\, a meditat ion on what living in a world of perpetual crisis has done to us\, and wha t we do to the world in return. On the surface\, the album’s ten songs v eer from spare to anthemic\, catchy to deliberately hard-turning. But bene ath that are perhaps the most complex and subtle arrangements of any Sleat er-Kinney record\, and a lyrical and emotional compass pointed firmly in t he direction of something both liberating and terrifying: the sense that o nly way to gain control is to let it go. \nPhoto by Kimberley Ross @kimmik a\nIn the Autumn of 2022\, Carrie Brownstein received a call from Corin Tu cker\, who herself had just received a call from the American embassy in I taly. Years earlier\, Brownstein listed Tucker as her emergency contact on a passport form\, and while she had since changed her phone number\, Tuck er had not. The embassy staff were desperately trying to reach Brownstein. When they finally did\, they told her what happened: While vacationing in Italy\, Brownstein’s mother and stepfather had been in a car accident. Both were killed. \nIn the months that followed\, Brownstein took solace i n an act that felt deeply familiar – playing guitar. “I don’t think I’ve played guitar that much since my teens or early twenties\,” she s ays. “Literally moving my fingers across the fretboard for hours on end to remind myself I was still capable of basic motor skills\, of movement\, of existing.” \nAlthough some of the album had already been written\, a spects of each song—a guitar solo\, the singing style\, the sonic approa ch—were pulled into a changed emotional landscape. As Brownstein and Tuc ker moved through the early aftermath of the tragedy\, elements of what wa s to become the emotional backbone of Little Rope began to form – how we navigate grief\, who we navigate it with\, and the ways in which it trans forms us. Sometimes the process of putting the songs together involved Tuc ker and Brownstein alone in a room with nothing more than a couple of guit ars and amplifiers – a process unchanged since the band started recordin g in the mid-90s. Sometimes songs\nthat started out quiet slowly transform ed into something triumphant. Sometimes the triumphant ones turned out to be quiet songs in disguise. \nThe result is a collision of certainty and u ncertainty that’s evident from the first few spare seconds of the record ’s opening track\, “Hell\,” where over an agoraphobic expanse of ton e and a trickle of chords\, Little Rope’s emotional thesis statement beg ins to take form: \nHell don’t have no worries\nHell don’t have no pas t\nHell is just a signpost when you take a certain path\nIt’s a restrain ed\, controlled prologue\, but control is fleeting. A few seconds later\, well\, all hell breaks loose. \nThat interplay of lyrical and musical mood s gives the record an immense depth. Even the catchiest hooks are hiding s omething. The album’s second track\, “Needlessly Wild\,” starts out delicious\, the single-syllable “wild” bending like taffy. But then th e lyrics betray something a little more malicious\, a little more marked b y pain\, and soon “I’m needlessly wild” festers into “I’m needle ss and wild\, needless and wild.” \nPhoto by Kimberley Ross @kimmika\nTi me and again – on second\, third\, tenth listen – the songs on Little Rope begin to upend their initial impressions. The jangly\, upbeat “Don ’t Feel Right” camouflages an unshakable loneliness\, a longing for so mething that’s never coming back. In “Hunt You Down\,” the opening r iff sounds a warning that smashes against a chorus delivered with a hint o f deceptive sweetness: “The thing you fear the most will hunt you down ” – a line Brownstein heard in an interview with a funeral director\, said to him by a father preparing to bury his child. \nOne of the album’ s standout tracks\, “Say It Like You Mean It\,” is an amalgam of so mu ch of what the band does best – an unforgettable\, unadorned riff backin g a raw examination of a relationship coming apart. It’s an exposed nerv e ending of a song. \nLittle Rope also marks the first time the band has w orked with Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton. \nPhoto by Chris Hornbecker\n“We’ve actually wanted to work with John for a long time\, but it wasn’t until this record that the stars aligned and we made it h appen\,” says Tucker. Congleton’s fingerprints are all over the album – he built a lot of the atmospherics in songs such as “Hell” or “S ix Mistakes\,” which both started out as much more spare tracks. It was also Congleton who heard the Tucker’s first run at the vocals for “Say It Like You Mean It” needed rework\, a piece of advice that at first di dn’t land too well. “I was fuming inside\, but I decided to take the s ong home that night and think about it\,” Tucker says. “I woke up in t he middle of the night and a new vocal melody popped into my head\, which I sang very quietly into my phone at 3 in the morning. The next day I came back into the studio and sang the new version\, and it turned out John wa s right – the song needed that reworking to get at the emotional peak. ” \nIn many ways\, Little Rope unleashes one of Sleater-Kinney’s most potent weapons: the shattering emotional range of Tucker’s vocals. In an album so centered on the vulnerability required to face the world as it i s\, Tucker manages to find her way from composure to its utter absence\, a nd what she conjures is a series of visceral turns\, a sharper\, heavier m anifestation of a rawness that’s always been there\, most notably on the band’s early landmark record\, Dig Me Out. It is clear from his newest release\, “Slide Man”\, that it is inf luence\, not imitation\, that he has learned from the blues masters. He ha s taken to heart the importance of keeping things uncluttered and of drivi ng straight down the middle of the groove until the last note has faded. \ nThe slide into the blues began for Henry at the age of 16\, while he was working at the Eugene (OR) Hotel as a busboy. It was while listening to a local radio station that he heard The Paul Butterfield Band playing “The Work Song” off of “East West”. Henry recalls\, “I heard that ampl ified harp and thought “My God! What’s that sound? It was amazing\, I ’d never heard anything like it.” \nHenry began buying Blues records – one of the first ones he bought was “Fathers and Sons”\, which fea tured (among others) Paul Butterfield and Muddy Waters. Living in Eugene\, Cooper was surrounded by some of the best Northwest harmonica players: Cu rtis Salgado (with his band the Nighthawks)\, Bill Rhoades\, and Mike Moth er. Henry checked them out\, picked their brains and got turned on to Litt le Walter and other blues musicians. By age 19\, he made his first recordi ng as a harp player\, a 45 with his friend Chris Coltraine. \nAfter findin g a lap steel guitar at a pawn shop\, Henry began using the licks he knew on the harmonica and applying them to the guitar as well as the sounds he ’d heard from Elmore James\, Muddy Waters and Albert Collins. By the age of 22\, he was playing guitar in his first band Los Explorers. Even thoug h he was living in Eugene\, a small college town\, there was a thriving bl ues scene and the musicians were always happy to offer their knowledge ope nly to an eager guitar player. \nAfter a few different bands\, Henry met B oyd Small and Andy Strange and\, along with former Los Explorers band-mate John Barley\, they formed Los Falcons. In 1987 Los Falcons was booked int o a New Year’s Eve show with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. The band learned a bunch of Jay’s tunes for the show and during sound check\, Jay heard th em play and said\, “I’m taking you boys to Europe with me!” When the tour ended Henry moved to Portland and started several other bands which included: Henry and the Hamhawks and one of Portland\, Oregon’s favorite trios\, The Terraplanes. \nHenry’s relationship with Burnside Records b egan in the early 90’s when he and his wife Anne moved to Seattle and He nry was introduced to a singer named Duffy Bishop\, who was looking for a blues guitarist for her new band. Little did Henry know that The Duffy Bis hop Band would take him on a five year ride as one of the hottest blues ba nds in the Northwest. \nThe Duffy Bishop Band along with Cooper on guitar recorded two CD’s for Burnside\, “Bottled Oddities” and “Back To T he Bone”\, before he decided that it was time for him to fly solo. Devot ing most of 1997 to writing and recording\, “Baby Please” was released on his own label\, High Action Records\, in May of 1998. Being Cooper’s first solo effort\, with limited distribution\, “Baby Please” sold ov er two thousand copies and made several favorite lists from critics and fa ns alike. It made Real Blues top 100 CD’s of 1998 as well as winning one of their four awards for “Best Pacific Northwest Blues CD Releases”.
