DESCRIPTION:The Community Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to pre
sent Garcia Birthday Band Live and Summer Tour Documentary Screening at th
e WOW Hall on Saturday\, September 12th. A special screening of Micha Rich
 ter’s Summer Tour\, a poetic documentary exploring the music\, culture\
, and enduring Grateful Dead community\, paired with a live concert by Gar
 cia Birthday Band. \n \nSummer Tour – Synopsis: \n  \n \nSummer Tour is
a poetic documentary that follows Jerry and Annie\, a magnetic young coup
le devoted to the music and community of Dead & Company as they journey ac
ross America for the band’s final tour. \nBlending intimate portraiture
with lyrical road imagery\, the film captures the essence of the Deadhead
experience: an unconventional family bound together by music\, freedom\, a
nd the open road. \nAt once a love story and a celebration of a uniquely A
merican tradition of wandering\, Summer Tour reflects on what it means to
seek belonging\, adventure\, and transcendence in a fleeting moment of cul
tural history. \n*This film is a portrait of Dead & Company through the fa
 ns\, not through the band\, itself \n  \nSummer Tour – Director’s Sta
tement:  \nWhen I was a teenager my high school sweetheart\, Chloë Sevig
ny\, introduced me to the Grateful Dead. We’d sit with a boombox listeni
ng to bootleg tapes\, wondering what it would be like to see the band in p
erson. In September of 1990\, the Dead played a run of shows at Madison Sq
uare Garden. We hopped the train from Connecticut to Grand Central and mad
e our way to the Garden. We didn’t have tickets or even much money but C
hloë cleverly found an unlocked door down a hallway and suddenly we were
in. \nThe music blew me away\, but what truly struck me was the community
surrounding the band. It wasn’t just a concert. It was a traveling vill
age that followed the Dead wherever they went. I was instantly hooked. For
the next two years\, I went to as many shows as I could\, falling in love
not just with the music\, but with the road and the fun surrounding the c
ommunity of Dead Heads. \nEventually\, I moved to Europe to study art\, an
d twenty years later returned to America. By then Jerry Garcia had been go
ne for over a decade yet the spirit of the Dead was alive and well. Bands
were still playing from their vast catalogue and the community around the
music was still thriving. \nThat’s when I knew I had to make a film. Sum
mer Tour is my love letter to this enduring 60 year old tradition. A look
inside the Grateful Dead experience and a celebration of the uniquely Amer
ican adventure of hitting the road\, chasing music and dancing. And while
doing so finding community. \nEnjoy the ride. \n  \nLearn more about Summ
er Tour online at: www.summertour.utopia.film \n  \nSummer Tour – Offic
ial Tour \n\n\n\n\n \n\nGarcia Birthday Band\, based in Portland Oregon\,
isn’t your mother’s Grateful Dead cover band. Playing for over 20 year
s\, GBB has evolved into something far deeper than the sum of its parts. T
he beating heart of the Pacific Northwest’s GD community\, the band’s
ever-expanding fanbase is an experience unto themselves. Using the Dead’
s repertoire as a springboard for limitless potential and improvisation\,
Garcia Birthday Band are a cornerstone of the modern Grateful Dead univers
e\, and their fans have come to expect the unexpected as the norm. \nPlaci
ng no boundaries on eras of the Dead’s career or catalog\, and drawing o
n decades of individual and shared experience\, GBB play the music through
an auditory kaleidoscope. Composed of some of the most ace players of the
Oregon live music community\, the band makes every show an act of explora
tion\, both musically and spiritually. United hearts and minds blur the li
ne between the stage and crowd – a carnival of human potential. If you
’re new to Garcia Birthday Band\, their doors are always open\, and you
’ll recognize it as something familiar when you first walk in: home. \nY
ou may recognize the fellas in GBB from acts such as Nine Days Wonder\, Cu
 bensis\, Shafty\, Turkey Bouillon Mafia\, The Campfire Boys\, Deadhenge\,
Shadow of Sound\, The Buds of May\, The Ike Willis Band\, Dead Sessions\,
and Dark Matter Transfer. \n  \nLearn more about the Garcia Birthday Band
