DESCRIPTION:22.09.26. 6.30–8pm \nWhilst indignation saturates Allan Came
ron’s third collection\, Things Can Only Get Worse\, whose title is a re
minder of Tony Blair’s unkept promises before his first mandate which le
d us into another NATO war of aggression aimed at terrorising peoples and
purloining the property of other nations\, this collection also praises th
e humanity of the great majority of people everywhere. Although Cameron is
a writer who goes in search of paradox\, there is no contradiction here.
Valuing humanity in these cynical times goes hand in hand with outrage at
the behaviour of the powerful and the politicians who serve them. \nWe liv
e in a period of insane and unforgiveable violence inflicted by the West o
n defenceless civilians with all the force of modern military technology.
Of all the recent wars\, however\, Gaza takes on even greater demonic prop
ortions not seen since the Second World War. Even silence is culpable in s
uch circumstances\, so the poet has reorganised the collection in order to
underscore the horrors we are witnessing\, whilst not forgetting that thi
s genocide has historical roots in the European colonisation of the rest o
 f the world\, particularly Africa\, America and Australia. \n  \nAbout Al
lan Cameron  \nBorn in 1952\, Allan Cameron went to boarding school at th
e age of six while also living in Nigeria and Bangladesh during holidays a
nd\, though he is no fan of such institutions\, he found that it gave him
a very sound education which compensated for the naval college he moved to
in 1965. Mutual dislike prompted an early departure in 1968\, and after t
hat he could once more pursue his education while trying out various occup
ations for fifteen years in Italy and England – too many to list. This p
art of his life could be defined as “down and out in London and Florence
”. In 1983 he went to Sussex University and afterwards taught there for
five years without tenure. In 1992 after moving to Glasgow\, his first tra
nslated book was published and he went on to translate twenty-eight more o
f them. In 2004 and 2005\, his first two novels were published by Luath Pr
ess. Since then two more novels\, two poetry collections and two non-ficti
on works have been added to his published works. The Scottish Review of Bo
oks summed up his output: “… there is … in Cameron’s work\, a ling
ering spirituality\, a faith that something soulful and significant is pre
sent in the everyday\, in the ordinary ‘heroism of mortals’ he writes
of. … he is dubious about ‘progress’\, political\, economic and scie
ntific. … if Scottish literature has a true outsider\, it is not Irvine
 Welsh\; it’s Allan Cameron.” \nAbout Vagabond Voices\n\nFounded in 200
8 and based in Glasgow\, Vagabond Voices is an independent publisher that
is both Scottish and fervently European in its aims. Vagabond is committed
to introducing new titles from Scottish authors and translating fiction f
rom other languages. Our library reflects our aims to promote literary amb
ition and innovative writers\, and to challenge readers.

DESCRIPTION:Edinburgh Book Group\nBy popular demand ...\n\nRather than rea
ding a specific book this time\, we'll chat about books we disliked. Every
attendee will have the chance to present one book and at the end of the s
ession\, we'll take a vote and potentially read one of them for a later ev
ent. Books are naturally subjective and often what one person dislikes\, a
 nother loves!

DESCRIPTION:Bonanza Non-fiction Book Club\nNB This may get moved to Octobe
r\n\n**1929: Inside the Crash (Andrew Ross Sorkin)**\n\n*A New York Times
Bestseller*\n\nFrom the bestselling author of Too Big to Fail\, “the def
initive history of the 2008 banking crisis\,”\\* comes a spellbinding na
rrative of the most infamous stock market crash in history. With the depth
of a classic history and the drama of a thriller\, 1929 unravels the gree
d\, blind optimism\, and human folly that led to an era-defining collapse
—one with ripple effects that still shape our society today.\n\nIn 1929\
, the world watched in shock as the unstoppable Wall Street bull market we
nt into a freefall\, wiping out fortunes and igniting a depression that wo
uld reshape a generation. But behind the flashing ticker tapes and panicke
 d traders\, another drama unfolded—one of visionaries and fraudsters\, t
itans and dreamers\, euphoria and ruin.\n\nWith unparalleled access to his
torical records and newly uncovered documents\, New York Times bestselling
author Andrew Ross Sorkin takes readers inside the chaos of the crash\, b
ehind the scenes of a raging battle between Wall Street and Washington and
the larger-than-life characters whose ambition and naivete in an endless
boom led to disaster. The dizzying highs and brutal lows of this era eeril
 y mirror today’s world—where markets soar\, political tensions mount\,
and the fight over financial influence plays out once again.\n\nThis is n
ot just a story about money. 1929 is a tale of power\, psychology\, and th
e seductive illusion that “this time is different.” It’s about disre
garded alarm bells\, financiers who fell from grace\, and skeptics who saw
the crash coming—only to be dismissed until it was too late.\n\nHailed
as a landmark book\, Too Big to Fail reimagined how financial crises are t
old. Now\, with 1929\, Sorkin delivers an immersive\, electrifying account
of the most pivotal market collapse of all time—with lessons that remai
n as urgent as ever. More than just a history\, 1929 is a crucial blueprin
t for understanding the cycles of speculation\, the forces that drive fina
ncial upheaval\, and the warning signs we ignore at our peril.
