DESCRIPTION:Derek McMillan\, the first certified practitioner and mentor o
f Gabor Mate’s compassionate inquiry in Scotland\, is offering a series
of trauma exploration sessions this autumn. They are aimed at facilitators
\, spaceholders\, and helping professionals to support them in their work.
\nThese insightful in-person events focus on understanding the impact of
trauma\, how it shapes our lives and learn from the wisdom it can offer. T
his unique opportunity is designed to support both personal growth and pro
fessional development. \nEngage with the topic in a supportive environment
that encourages understanding and healing. Whether you are seeking to dee
pen your self-awareness or enhance your professional skills\, this event o
ffers valuable perspectives and tools. \n  \nDates and topics: Monthly (S
eptember to December) on a Tuesday evening from 7.15-8.45pm \nSeptember 22
nd – Moving beyond the stories we tell ourselves\nOctober 27th – Embra
 cing our authentic self\nNovember 17th – Transforming core beliefs\nDece
mber 8th – Connecting with our essence \n(This is not a closed group –
you can join one or more workshop depending on your own personal and prof
essional commitments.) \n  \nSeptember 22nd – Moving beyond the storie
s we tell ourselves\nThe intention for this workshop is:\n1. To understand
how our thoughts shape our experience of ourselves and the world.2. To br
ing present moment awareness to lead others in making a distinction betwee
n thoughts\, sensations and emotions.\n3. To understand the difference bet
ween explicit and implicit memories.\n4. To create new ways of understandi
ng and experiencing ourselves and the world. \n  \nGuidelines of the spac
e \nExplicit agreements: The topic here is trauma and you may get triggere
 d. We’re here to learn how to work with it and so I encourage you to lea
n into your edge. However\, if things get too much for you then know that
you don’t have to share anything that you don’t want to\; you can leav
e the room and give yourself some space\; there will be an assistant here
who can be with you if you need some support. What will support you in fee
ling safe? \nIf at any point you feel uncomfortable with a topic\, a perso
n or an issue we’re discussing\, get curious about it. Ask yourself\, wh
at am I making this mean? Is it true? And if it’s not true\,\nthen what
is true? If you do not want to share out loud then you have the option of
journaling or sitting and connecting with your breath and body\, whatever
helps you to regulate and express yourself in a way that feels safe. Respe
ct anything shared in the space by maintaining and honouring confidentiali
 ty. \n  \nAbout Derek \nHi there\, I’m Derek. \nI have a background tea
ching philosophy\, psychology and religious/moral studies in secondary sch
ools. I also love to travel and whilst my home is in Edinburgh\, Scotland\
, I have spent the past three decades studying and practising bodywork\, m
artial arts\, movement\, meditation and music throughout Asia. \nThere is
no division between my personal and professional life. My offerings come o
ut of my own deeply personal journey and interests\, whether it be explori
ng the deeper meaning of\nlife\, growing in relationship to myself and oth
ers\, addressing childhood trauma and old patterns/beliefs\, developing a
positive relationship with my body or creating more peace and\nharmony in
my life. \nYou can read more about my work on my website. \nYou can eithe

DESCRIPTION:24.09.26\, 6-8pm. Free. For 18-30s.  \nInviting participants
to respond to Eva Rothschild’s sculpture series Soft Play and film Safe\
, 2026\, this porcelain handbuilding workshop will make use of intuitive a
nd embodied sculpting methods to create playful\, abstract sculptures.  \
nWe often associate porcelain with fragility\, as well as a gendered and r
acialised performance of femininity. But in its wet clay state\, it is sof
t\, slippery\, and highly malleable. Drawing on Rothschild’s thinking ab
out gendered modes of engaging with objects in public space\, we’ll shap
e and stretch wet porcelain to create emotional artefacts of ‘gender per
formance’ and bodily experience. We’ll think about queerness\, masculi
nity\, and femininity\, finding potential for gender disobedience and play
in experiencing the soft and slippery. \nAs tactility comes to the fore\,
participants are encouraged to respond more to feeling than an attempt to
create pre-existing forms\; the potential structural collapse of these ob
jects can become interesting stories to tell\, too. At the end of the work
shop\, we’ll stage a mini exhibition of our work\, plotting our objects
in space together.  \nThis workshop especially welcomes queer and trans p
articipants.  \nXuanlin Tham is a Singaporean writer\, curator\, and make
r based in Edinburgh\, keenly interested in the (collective) body and desi
re. Their book Revolutionary Desires: The Political Power of the Sex Scene
explores the sex scene’s capacity to interrupt the violences of capital
ism\, and is out with 404 Ink. They programme at Take One Action\, an arts
organisation harnessing the transformative power of film and storytelling
for social and environmental justice in Scotland and beyond. As an indepe
ndent curator and facilitator\, they have worked with Glasgow Short Film F
estival\, Queer East\, Rhubaba\, and the Edinburgh Art Festival. Xuanlin
’s writing on film and culture has been published in e–flux\, British
 GQ\, i-D\, Little White Lies\, and AnOther Magazine\, among others.  \nAc
