DESCRIPTION:This year’s Raft Race will take place on Sat 22 August 2026
12-4pm \nAbout this event\nPreviously part of the Edinburgh Canal Festival
\, the Raft Race was introduced as a standalone event by Fountainbridge Ca
nalside Community Trust in 2025. Following its great success\, the event w
ill now return as part of the Edinburgh Canal Festival Summer 2026 at the
end of August as last event. \nThe Raft Race has been run for at least 15
years\, with the support of various water activity providers\, who have ap
propriate skills\, knowledge\, staff and insurance to provide fun and safe
activities on the water. \n\n\nWhen is the event?\nSaturday 22 August 202
 6\, 2pm-4pm \n\n2pm-3.45 – heats\n3.45pm – final\n\nShortly before the
event in August\, we will allocate slots in the heats\, and you will be a
sked to arrive approximately 15 minutes before you heat time. Since there
is not much space on the pontoon\, if you arrive earlier\, you will need t
o stay with your raft slightly away from the racing area before you can en
ter the pontoon. \nDoes it cost to enter?\nThere is a £15 entry fee per r
aft to take part in the race. \nUnfortunately\, in the past there have bee
n a number of people who have booked to take part and simply not turned up
\, which results in gaps in the races and less fun for everyone. No-one wa
nts this\, so we hope this small financial commitment will help ensure tha
t everyone who enters is fully committed to attending. \nHow many people c
an there be in a team?\nWe welcome rafts which carry single participants u
p to a maximum of 6 people. You need to make one entry per team. Unfortuna
tely\, we cannot match up people who want to join a team – you must find
your own. We would recommend a team of 2-4 people. We would also encourag
e you to decorate your raft or even show up in costumes to make your team
to stand out! \nWhat are the rules about building rafts and racing? \n\nBu
oyancy aids and helmets must be worn and will be provided.\nAll rafts must
be deemed canal-worthy by the assessment of Raft Race Instructors prior t
o launch.\nRaft materials must not contaminate the canal in any way.\nRaft
s must not be more than 6 feet or 1.8m wide.\nRafts must be powered by hum
an power only.\nNo marine parts may be included e.g. canoes\, paddles etc.
(you can make your own paddles – just not use a bought one)\nAll partic
ipants are responsible for the removal and disposal of their raft followin
g the event (this includes all bits from land or water!!!)\nAny number of
people can be on each raft but all must pass the finish line.\nAll teams m
ust be able to carry their rafts overland from finish to start line\, if t
hey are fortunate enough to gain a place in the semi-finals/final.\nThe ju
dges’ word is final!\n\nPRIOR TO RACING\, DRIFTWOOD INSTRUCTORS WILL INS
PECT THE RAFT AND IF IT IS DEEMED TO BE A HAZARD TO THE YOURSELVES OR OTHE
R PARTICIPANTS\, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RACE (unless it can be fixed in l
ine with any instructions given). \nCan I build a raft on the day?\nNo\, u
nfortunately you can’t build a raft on the day. All participating rafts
need to be pre-made by participants. \nCan anyone help us with tools or ti
ps?\nWe have some great voluntary organisations in Edinburgh who lend tool
s and organise maker space. They aren’t specifically set up for you to b
uild and store a raft\, but they are great people to get involved with!\nE
 dinburgh Tool Library: https://edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk/\nEdinburgh Fo
rge: https://edinburghforge.com/ \nPrizes\nWe are looking to secure great
prizes for our racers from local businesses. In the past\, prizes have in
cluded: Escape Room\, Bowling\, Dishoom goodies\, Nuffield Health (gym pas
ses) and even an MOT! \nThis year we will have 4 prizes: \n\nFastest Raft\
nMost Unique Raft Design\nBest Dressed Raft or Best Racer Costumes\nWooden
Spoon Award\n\nAttendees\nThe Raft Race aims to attract local people and
visitors\, providing fun and connection in the local community\, as well a
s raising awareness of the fantastic green and blue spaces available in Ed
inburgh. We expect the majority of people to come from the local area\, an
d so travel to the festival by foot\, bike or bus. There is limited car pa
rking\, but this has not been an issue in past years. There are no tickets
to attend the event – it is free of charge. \nFacilities\nFor spectator
s\, the organisers are arranging for 2 x portaloos at the Leamington Liftb
ridge with accessible toilets available at Edinburgh Printmakers (less tha
n 5 minutes walk from each area). \nRaft Race participants will be able to
use the Scottish Canals Facilities Block\, which is next to the Liftbridg
e – this has 3 large cubicles with toilets and showers. We would advise
bringing a towel and change of clothes\, as if you fall into the canal\,
we would advise a hot shower. \nMusic and Compere\nFCCT plan to have a DJ
from 12-2pm\, and Andy Chung (who you may remember from the past few years
) with music and commentary on the semi-finals and final\, from 2-4pm. \nM
arshals and First Aid \nFCCT will provide appropriate volunteer marshal co
ver for the event – to keep the spectators safe\, and to direct Raft Rac
e participants to be in the right place at the right time. They will all h
ave bright blue Canal Festival t-shirts and/or High Viz. FCCT and Driftwoo
d Adventure have qualified First Aiders on their teams. \nVideo and Photog
raphy\nThis is a very public event\, and there are quite often press and a
mateur photographers and videographers in attendance. If you would prefer
not to be photographed\, you can let us know and we can cover your face in
our coverage. \nHowever we will not be able to stop others from taking th
eir own footage and photos\, so if you are sensitive to this\, we would su
ggest this may not be the best event for you.
