DESCRIPTION:Music Makers\nClick on the below link and follow the steps to
join. You can join from a computer\, phone or tablet\, computer has best a
udio usually. See tips below. To join Zoom Meeting\n\nhttps://zoom.us/j/34

usicmaker\n\nA lovely session of music and song in a relaxed and supportiv
e environment. All levels of musician and singer welcome. You can come and
sing or play one song or just come and listen to the other members. Great
way to build up your playing skills and build up your confidence.\n\nTo m
aintain our zoom and music maker accounts we request a €2 contribution.
It is difficult to collect money for the online events so we are suggestin
g that if possible we could use revolut to transfer the €2 if you don't
have an account I'm sure you know someone who could do the transaction for
you. The host will identify the Revolut number on the night. If you don't
have access to revolut it doesn't matter we will look at some other way t
o collect the €2 euro.\n\nZoom is not optimized for music\, but we have
tested it and think it's decent enough for a get together in the absence o
f a face to face meeting. Voice is better than instrument.\n\nZoom is pret
ty simple to get into and use. You don't need an account but if you want t
o test it out beforehand\, you can get a free one by searching for it wher
e you get your apps or downloading it on the web.\n\nA few simple guidelin
es to ensure it runs smoothly.\n\n1. Stay on mute while someone else is pl
aying or singing. You can join in ONLY if you are on mute\, because the de
lay over the internet does not allow simultaneous playing online.\n\n2. Wh
en you are playing\, stay as close to your device's microphone as possible
for best results.\n\n3. There are two views - Gallery view and Active Spe
aker view. Active speaker will put the video on the person singing\, Galle
ry view will show everyone. You may have to search a bit to find each view
\, it is different on each device.\n\n4. You can mute your audio and/or yo
ur video.\n\nThe host reserves the right to mute anyone whose line is caus
ing audio interference.\n\n5. There is an interesting option to record you
rself first and then share it - the quality will be better.\n\nIn Zoom the
re's an icon called "Share Content"\, if you click that you get the option
to share files on you Google Drive etc. I've just tried it out and it all
ows you to throw up pre-recorded audio and/or video files. These replace y
our video picture while they play. When they finish just hit the share con
tent icon again and your video image comes back. So this might be an optio
n for anyone to pre-recrord (good quality)\, load onto Google Drive\, join
a Zoom session and\, when it comes to their turn\, introduce their song a
nd share the pre-recorded song from G Drive.\n\n6. As mentioned above\, Zo
om is optimised for voice rather than music so it actually tries to filter
out music thinking that it's background noise but that filter can be disa
bled but only on Windows and macOS as follows:\n\nOn the Zoom Home page on
you laptop:\nClick on 'Settings' (top right)\nThen click on 'Audio' (left
pane)\nThen click 'Advanced' (bottom right)\nThen tick the box at the top
of the screen 'Show in-meeting option to "Enable Original Sound" from mic
 rophones'\n\nThen\, when you're on a call\, a toggle switch appears at the
top left of your screen "Turn on Original Sound".\nClick that - it change
s to "Turn off Original Sound" and you're done.\n\nPreferred setup for any
one with an instrument might thus be:\n1) Windows or macOS\n2) Turn on Ori
ginal Sound\n3) Direct connect to router (rather than Wi-Fi)\nEven better
if you have a microphone connected via an audio interface device to your l
 aptop/PC.\n\n7. Don't forget your drink!

DESCRIPTION:Mary is Ireland’s greatest jazz and blues singer and “one
of our most openly raw performers” (Hotpress). In a career fast approach
ing its 40th year\, she is about to enter its next\, exciting stage.  \n
\nBorn in Shantalla\, Galway city\, Mary has made some of the most uncomp
romising\, wholly personal\, and universal music by any Irish artist. Whi
le her roots are in jazz and blues - Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith are a
mong her inspirations - pop\, rock\, folk\, and chanson (Edith Piaf is als
o a touchstone) influences also appear in her work. Now\, the next chapte
r of her distinguished career finds her exploring a little known side of
the music of Peggy Lee. \n\n To hear Mary sing\, is\, as Velvet Thunde
r said\, “to be at the core of the human heart”. It was a voice whic
h first came to wide attention in 1985\, when Mary burst onto the Irish mu
sic scene with her debut album\, Tired and Emotional. That album led to a
ppearances on The Late Late Show\, a hit single with ‘Delaney’s Gon
e Back On The Wine’\, and tours of Britain\, Germany\, and Holland.
\n\nShe followed that explosive release with Under The Influence (19
87)\, Uncertain Pleasures (1990)\, and Sentimental Killer (1992)\, whi
ch firmly established her reputation as an unflinchingly honest\, emotio
nally raw vocalist\, never afraid to embrace the most difficult of subject
matter in her work. \n\nAs The Irish News said\, she “doesn’t just
take her audiences to church with her music\, she practically baptises th
em with her passion and pain”. \n\nIt was the same in her 2009 autobio
graphy\, Bloody Mary\, where she documented addiction problems\, relation
 ship troubles\, familial abuse\, career mismanagement\, suicide attempts\,
and dark days spent confined to psychiatric wards. \n\nDespite the diffi
culties she encountered\, the music kept coming with  Live In Galway
(1996)\, After The Fall (1997)\, Mary Coughlan Sings Billie Holiday
(2000)\, Long Honeymoon (2001)\, The House Of Ill Repute (2008)\,
best of set\, The Whole Affair (2012)\, released the same year she enjoy
ed a sold out show at Sydney Opera House\, and Live & Kicking (2017).
\n\nMary is also no stranger to the big screen\, having appeared in two fi
lms by acclaimed Irish director Neil Jordan - 1988’s High Spirits with
  Peter O Toole\, Daryl Hannah\, and Donal McCann\, and 2005’s Breakfast
on Pluto with Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea. \n\nMore recently\, theat
re has become another stage for Mary’s talents. In 2019\, her early life
was dramatised in Woman Undone\, a “profoundly moving\, brave\, and
beautiful fusion of theatre\, music\, and dance” (Galway Advertiser)\,
created by Mary and the award-winning Irish theatre company Brokentalker
s\, in collaboration with Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurdsson\, and move
ment director Eddie Kaye. \n\nNow sober for close to 30 years\, the mothe
r of five and grandmother of six\, reached new peaks as a performer and so
ngwriter with her most recent album\, 2020’s acclaimed Life Stories. \
 n\nBy turns powerful\, swaggering\, sexy\, harrowingly raw\, and deeply ho
nest\, Life Stories runs the full gamut of both music and emotions\, fro
m cabaret (‘High Heel Boots’) to late night jazz balladry (‘Elbow D
eep’\, ‘No Jericho ) to some of the most exuberant pop oriented s
ongs Mary has yet recorded (‘Forward Bound’\, ‘Steps Forward’).
\n\nReleased via the artist’s own label\, Hail Mary Records\, it reached
No 1 on iTunes and Amazon\; garnered five star reviews from Music Repub
lic\, Get Ready To Rock\, and Musicriot.com. The Sunday Times Ireland
said\, “rarely has an album referenced a life so pointedly”\, while
The Daily Mail rightly said it was created by “a consummate talent at
the top of her game”. \n\nTo cap it all\, in 2020\, Mary was presented
with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the then Mayor of Galway\, Mike Cubb
ard. \n\nNever one to sit still\, Mary is now planning her most ambitious
project to date. While she has covered Billie Holiday\, Joy Division\, an
d The Blue Nile in the past\, she intends to reimagine the album Peggy Lee
made with the pioneering rock’n’roll songwriters Lieber and Stoller\,
composers of such songs as ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Jailhouse Rock’. \n
 \nThe album\, Mirrors\, described by Allmusic.com as “intelligent\, evo
 cative\, understated\, and mature”\, explored themes of murder\, madnes
s\, despair\, longing\, and the rise of Fascism in the USA. Mary has been
eager to work on this project for many years\, but it was during lockdown
that the opportunity presented itself. This has led her to work with music
ians and visual artists to create what will be an immersive\, multimedia\,
experience. \n\nWhat a way for Mary to mark her oncoming fifth decade i
 n music.
