 	\n \n \n \n \n \n This Week: Randy Burk & the Prisoners
 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nIn the rich tradition of artists like
Steve Earle\, Johnny Cash\, and Dave Alvin\, artist Randy Burk creates mu
sic that is at once exciting and familiar\, honest and soulful\, fearless
and introspective. Burk has an unparalleled blue-collar work ethic that he
’s easily applied to the cutthroat world of music with a midwestern sens
ibility that for the last 23 years has enabled him to play more than 200 s
hows a year across the Midwest\, West Coast\, and Europe with the Prisoner
 s.  \nBurk’s affinity for songs about love\, life\, pain\, and good ol
’ hard work can be traced to his small-town Iowa roots. Born and raised
in Atlantic\, Iowa\, Burk spent much of his youth singing in the church an
d listening to his father’s collection of Elvis Presley 8 tracks. These
roots he never abandoned even while sharing the stage with artists from Bi
g Smith to Jason Aldean. Roots that ground honesty to his songwriting and
humility across the thousands of miles and thousands of shows.  \n“My b
oots have known mostly rocky roads\, but that makes the songs come easy so
metimes\,” Burk says. In 2012 Randy Burk and the Prisoners won the Artis
tSignal.com 90-day competition for $25\,000\, which helped them release th
eir 3rd album “Money\, Heart & Soul.” Burk and the Prisoners are slate
d to release their highly anticipated 5th album this winter. \n\n \n

Attendance Agreement. The full agreement can be found at therookroom.com/

ng puzzle swaps for years now and between requests for something similar f
or games and talking with our counterparts across the country\, we knew th
is would be a great fit to host in Des Moines. Who doesn’t love a garage
sale?! \nWhen do I drop off my games again? Game drop off is Wednesday\,
September 16 through Wednesday\, September 23 during regular open hour at
the Rook Room. \nI am having an issue with the form\, what should I do? If
you are having issues submitting to form that persist\, you can send a co
py of your Game List directly to events@therookroom.com. You can find that
template here. \nHow do I price my games? You will fill out the games pri
cing sheet linked here and above. This helps our team keep track of your g
ames to pay you and makes our set up run smoothly. It is up to you how to
price your games\, but our general recommendation is between 50-75% of mar
ket value depending on the wear and quality of your game. \nCan I price my
game above $30? We do allow you to do that. You will fill the price you w
ant to sell your game for in the notes section of your Game List! Be caref
ul\, though\, to price everything to sell if you want to see a return. \nW
hat if I don’t want the games that don’t sell? We can donate your unso
ld games to local nonprofits like The Beacon\, Senior Center\, and youth p
rogramming! \nI don’t want the money from sales. Can I just donate my cu
t? Yes\, you sure can. We’ll will use any profits to continue our missio
n of providing an accessible\, community-oriented third place with great g
ames\, food\, and drinks for the greater Des Moines area! \nHow do I get p
aid? You will receive your payout after October 1 through Venmo. You will
provide your Venmo account on the google form. This is the only payment op
tion we are offering for this Game Garage Sale. \nWhy am I only getting 60
% of the sale price of my games? The Rook Room team is putting a lot of ti
me and effort into making a great Game Garage sale for the community and h
osting it in our space\, so we want to pay our people for their time and m
ake sure we can continue to host exciting events like this for the communi
ty! \nHow can I help? We love this question! If you are interested in hel
ping us inventory games\, support Garage Sale set up efforts\, or spread t
he word\, we love all of those options. Email events@therookroom.com to ge
t more information. \nCan you help me\, I have a different question!? Fear
not! Email events@therookroom.com and we will get your question answered.

the built and natural environment. When grouped together\, the works offer
a space for reflection on how people interact with the land and how feeli

displacement. (Not) At Home is curated by Lilah Anderson. The exhibition w

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this chance to meet Jodi Picoult\, the #1 New Yo
rk Times bestselling author of By Any Other Name\, as she returns to De
s Moines!  Jodi had such a great visit in 2024\, that she requested to co
me back again.  PURCHASE your ticket HERE!  Ticket price includes: admis
sion for one person + a pre-signed copy of her newest book + a photo with
Jodi!\n\nHollow Bones is a riveting novel about the risks we take to prot
ect the ones we love in a world where crisis is always just around the cor
ner.\n\nOn September 11\, 2001\, when Molly Fitzgerald was only two months
old\, her mother went to an appointment at the World Trade Center and nev
er came home. Her father and the stepmother who raised her couldn’t have
loved her more\, but she still grew up with a healthy dread of disasters.
\n\nNow an adult\, she runs the Rhode Island Department for Emergency Prep
aredness\, mapping out ways to save lives during storms\, epidemics\, and
airplane crashes. She and her husband\, Jesse—a police polygraph expert
with his own history of crisis—have found a love that is a solace in a d
angerous world. But then the unexpected upends their new marriage\, leadin
g them both to question everything they thought they knew.\n\nMoving betwe
en past and present\, Hollow Bones is an epic story of the lies we tell
ourselves as we write the narratives of our lives\, the plans we design to
protect ourselves at the worst moments\, and the ties that bind mothers a
nd daughters.\n \n\nJodi Picoult is the #1 New York Times bestselling
author of twenty-nine novels\, renowned for combining richly drawn charact
ers with timely and thought-provoking themes. Her 30th novel\, Hollow Bon
es\, will publish on September 15\, 2026. Her books\, including Mad Honey
(co-written with Jennifer Finney Boylan)\, Wish You Were Here\, The Boo
 k of Two Ways\, A Spark of Light\, Small Great Things\, Leaving Time\, an
d My Sister’s Keeper\, have been translated widely and have reached mi
llions of readers around the world. She has also co-authored two young adu
lt novels\, Between the Lines and Off the Page\, with her daughter Sam
antha van Leer.\n\nPicoult’s work is celebrated not only for its emotion
al depth and meticulous research but also for tackling complex moral and e
thical issues with nuance and compassion. Whether writing about reproducti
 ve rights\, racism\, school shootings\, or end-of-life choices\, she invit
es readers into intimate\, often controversial spaces that challenge assum
ptions and spark conversation.\n\n\nIn addition to her literary achievemen
ts\, Picoult is a passionate and vocal advocate for intellectual freedom a
nd the freedom to read. She has emerged as one of our nation’s most outs
poken opponents of book banning\, working with organizations such as PEN A
merica and Unite Against Book Bans to defend the right to read. Her essays
and speeches on the subject have resonated with educators\, librarians\,
and readers nationwide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKali White VanBaale will join
Jodi as moderator for this event. She is the award-winning author of the n
ovels The Monsters We Make\, The Good Divide\, and The Space Between. Sh
e also writes and publishes short stories\, personal essays\, and articles
. \nKali is the managing editor-at-large of the nonfiction literary jou
rnal and anthology Past Ten  and is a core faculty member in the Linden
wood University MFA in Writing Program where she was named adjunct profess
or of the year.  \nShe lives in Iowa with her family and is a 2025 Iowa A
uthor Award recipient. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOTE:  This event will be held in th
e Franklin Center’s Large Auditorium located on the northwest corner of
the venue.  Doors will open at 5:30 pm.  Free parking is available on th
