ew in the Pamela Bass-Bookey and Harry Bookey Gallery September 10 – Dec
 ember 6\, 2026. \nNoujaïm is a French-Lebanese artist and filmmaker based
between Paris\, France and Athens\, Greece. His work explores how individ
uals and territories navigate forms of collapse\, treating contemporary ar
chitecture as spaces charged with narratives\, tensions\, and latent imagi
naries. Through film and video\, he examines how power\, memory\, and coll
ective imaginaries are inscribed in built environments and what survives w
hen they unravel. Moving between documentary and fiction\, he weaves toget
her personal histories\, political landscapes\, and the silent weight of s
paces to construct layered works. \nREGISTER \nFree\; registration require

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday September 24 at 6:00 pm in Aliber 101 (2847 Univer
sity Ave)\, The Comparison Project and Zimpleman College of Business host
the first event of their 2026–2028 series "Prophets & Profits\," a panel
dialogue featuring local insurance industry executives. The series is gen
erously supported by the Joel W. Peterson Trust. \n\nInsurance does more t
han calculate probabilities and pay claims. It determines how uncertainty\
, vulnerability\, and financial loss are shared—and who will be protecte
d when catastrophe strikes. Decisions about pricing\, coverage\, exclusion
s\, claims\, and capital therefore involve not only technical and commerci
al judgments\, but also fundamental questions of fairness\, responsibility
\, trust\, and human dignity.\n\nThis opening panel in the Prophets & Prof
its series will bring together experienced insurance executives to explore
how their personal moral and religious convictions inform the difficult d
ecisions they face as leaders. How do they balance actuarial discipline an
d financial sustainability with compassion and social responsibility? Are
there ethical limits to risk-based pricing\, even when it is economically
justified? What responsibilities do insurers have to individuals and commu
nities facing risks they cannot reasonably bear alone?\n\nDrawing on both
personal experience and professional expertise\, the panelists will consid
er how these tensions shape their leadership\, their organizations\, the i
nsurance industry\, and the communities they serve—especially in a world
confronting growing climate volatility\, healthcare costs\, and interconn
ected economic risks.\n\nPanelists for the event include: \n\nScott Jean i
s President and CEO of EMC Insurance Companies\, where he has served since
beginning his career as an actuary in 1991. A graduate of Iowa State Univ
ersity\, he is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a Member of
the American Academy of Actuaries.\n\nNick Gerhart is Chief Operating Offi
cer of Homesteaders Life Company and previously served as Chief Administra
tive Officer at FBL Financial Group and Commissioner of the Iowa Insurance
Division. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern
Iowa and both law and health-administration degrees from Saint Louis Unive
rsity.\n\nChristian Walk is Senior Vice President\, Legal and Associate Ge
neral Counsel at Global Atlantic Financial Group\, as well as a respected
leader in Iowa’s insurance community. An attorney and ordained minister\
, he brings a distinctive perspective on the intersection of professional
 responsibility\, faith\, and ethical leadership.\n\nJason Giles is a share
holder at Nyemaster Goode whose corporate practice encompasses insurance\,
mergers and acquisitions\, commercial transactions\, governance\, and ris
k assessment. A Drake MBA and law graduate\, he is active in his church an
d religious organizations and previously served a two-year mission in Ecua
 dor.

\, and Community in the Early 21st Century United States.” Co-hosted by
The Comparison Project and Zimpleman College of Business\, the event is ge
nerously supported by the Joel W. Peterson Trust. \n\nIs the United States
healthy? Is it wealthy? How do we know? This lecture employs approaches u
sed to measure well-being in “developing” nations to explore the relat
ionship between health\, wealth\, flourishing\, and community in religious
and economic contexts. While Max Weber\, Karl Marx\, and Robert Putnam wo
rried about the instrumentalized\, rationalized place of religion or its a
bsence in capitalist systems\, economists\, philosophers\, and practitione
rs of international economic development proposed integrated models of eco
nomic advancement that framed prosperity in terms of flourishing\, communi
ty\, and capabilities often tied to religious ideals. What might this mean
for the contemporary United States when religious\, financial\, and socia
l systems are struggling in the face of political polarization\, globaliza
tion\, and demographic and environmental change?\n\nDr. Jill DeTemple is P
rofessor and Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department
of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University. She received her B
 . A. in Asian Studies from Bowdoin College\, her M. T. S. in Christianity
and Culture from Harvard Divinity School\, and her Ph.D. in Religion and C
ulture from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research
interests include faith-based economic development\, Latin American relig
ions\, Pentecostalism\, and the use of dialogue in classrooms to promote i
ntellectual humility\, conviction\, civic engagement\, and deep learning.
She is the author or co-author of three books\, most recently The Dialogi
c Classroom: Revolutionary Listening for Curiosity\, Engagement\, and Deep
Learning (Taylor & Francis\, 2025)\, which focuses on a dialogic pedagogy
that she hopes will help make college better for everyone.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 19 at 6:00 pm in Aliber 101\, Dr. Sudev
Sheth\, Senior Lecturer of International Studies at the Lauder Institute
and the Wharton School and Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at
the University of Pennsylvania\, will lecture on “Who Owns Wealth? Gand
hi’s Answer to Capitalism.” Co-hosted by The Comparison Project and Zi
mpleman College of Business\, the event is generously suppported by the Jo
el W. Peterson Trust. \n\nWho owns wealth\, and what responsibilities come
with creating it? While modern debates about capitalism often focus on ma
rkets versus government\, Gandhi offered a strikingly different perspectiv
 e. He argued that wealth should not be viewed as absolute private property
but as a trust held on behalf of society. Drawing on the stories of some
of India’s most influential business families\, this lecture explores Ga
ndhi’s idea of “trusteeship” and how it shaped generations of entrep
reneurs. It concludes by considering what Gandhi’s vision might contribu
te to contemporary debates about business\, inequality\, and corporate pur
pose.\n\nDr. Sudev Sheth is Senior Lecturer of International Studies at th
e Lauder Institute and the Wharton School\, and Senior Lecturer in the Dep
artment of History at the University of Pennsylvania. His research explore
s the history of capitalism in India through the lives of merchants\, entr
epreneurs\, and business families. Combining literary sources\, archival m
anuscripts\, and business records\, he investigates how commerce has influ
enced culture\, politics\, and urban life. His current work traces merchan
t life in Ahmedabad across centuries while exploring the ways business giv
es form to cities and ideas. He is the author of Bankrolling Empire: Famil
y Fortunes and Political Transformation in Mughal India(Cambridge Universi
 ty Press\, 2024).
