DESCRIPTION:The Des Moines Art Center invites visitors to join artist Elle
Pérez in conversation with Associate Curator Ashton Cooper. The two will
discuss and dive into the body of photographs presented in the exhibition
“Elle Pérez: La Despedida\,” on view in the A. H. Blank Gallery thro
ugh November 29\, 2026. \nElle Pérez is an artist working across photogra
phy\, collage\, and moving image. Their work depicts intimate moments\, em
otional exchanges\, and visceral details within the love and violence of e
veryday life. Pérez’s photographs balance casual observation with conce
ptual and formalist considerations: intentionally sequenced installations\
, collages that act as mind maps\, and structuralist films that highlight
the tension between image and text\, description and embodiment. Their wor
k celebrates the ambiguity inherent to photography and queerness — a pho
tograph is not an illustration\, it can both resist discursive limitations
and hold meaning beyond language. Pérez made their first photographs as
a teenager while attending punk shows in the Bronx. They have continued ma
king artwork made for the audience it grows out of\, rather than simply be
ing about them. \nThe artist’s 2025 series “La Despedida (the world is
always ending\, the world is always again beginning)” encompasses photo
graphs taken in the gardens of two very different sites: Pérez’s grandf
ather’s backyard in Puerto Real\, Puerto Rico\, and Impressionist painte
r Claude Monet’s home in Giverny\, France. In the eleven photographs on
view\, Pérez deploys close cropping\, zooming in on expanses of blooming
 flowers\, lace curtains\, and breaking waves. \nREGISTER \nFree\; registra

DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of all things\, God spoke\, and a family tree
sprouted in the dust. Adam and Eve were the first branches\, but soon thi
 s beautiful tree came to include Noah\, Abraham\, Jesse\, King David\, and
eventually Jesus… \nBranch retells the journey from sin to salvation th
rough stirring poetry and a wonderfully accessible metaphor of trees\, gar
dens\, and plants. Luminous art from Michelle Carlos overflows with striki
ng Old and New Testament imagery\, which is explained further in back matt
er notes from the author and illustrator. Whether readers are hearing this
story for the first–or hundredth–time\, they’ll find something new
to discover on this expansive journey from Genesis to Revelation. Branch
is an unforgettable book to share during all seasons\, especially around C
hristmas and Easter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit – Courtney Wil
son\nRebecca Janni (pronounced Yawn-nee) goes by Rebecca on paper\, Becky
in voice and sign language (sign name: B handshape\, tap opposite shoulder
)\, and “Mom” to six adult and young adult children. She lives in Stil
lwater\, MN with her husband James\, their youngest daughter Elizabeth\, a
nd their two dogs Ollie and Louie.  \nYoung Becky learned early that biki
ng was the best way to get around the neighborhood and reading was the bes
t way to get around the world. On a bus ride home from school\, she confid
ed to a friend that she was working on a novel about a girl and her horse.
She never finished the novel\, but a horse of a different hoof shows up i
 n her Every Cowgirl series.  \nHer newest book\, Branch: A Resurrection S
tory\, is her “heart on paper\,” exploring the connection between her
faith and writing. For as long as she can remember\, her most profound mom
ents of prayer and worship have happened with a blank sheet of paper and a
pen. Whether she is journaling\, writing for ministry\, or creating a wor
k of fiction\, writing feeds her faith and faith enriches her writing. \nR
ebecca holds a BA in English and French from Iowa State University and an
MAT in English Education from Boston University. She has enjoyed teaching
both high school and college. In addition to writing children’s books\,
Rebecca has written for Meredith Corporation publications\, local ministri
es\, and education curricula. She loves visiting schools\, universities an
d libraries\, offering story times and writing workshops. If you invite he
r\, she might pedal into your neighborhood\, too!

“Let Us Gather in a Flourishing Way: Contemporary Latinx Painting\,” w

f the show and introduce us to three of the featured artists: Danielle De

us is a Nuyorican painter and photographer born and raised in Bushwick\, B
rooklyn\, whose woks tell the story of growing up in New York City amid ge
ntrification and displacement. De Jesus’s background is in photography\,

o tell the story of the community’s displaced residents. \nJustin Favela
is based in Las Vegas and is known for large-scale installations and scul
pture that manifest his interactions with American pop culture and the que
er Latinx experience. Favela explores traditional Mexican and Latin Americ
an craft — specifically cartoneria (a traditional Mexican folk art form
that involves three-dimensional objects using papier-mâché and cardboard
 ) — and his interest in art history\, community\, celebration\, and home
inform a practice intent on dismantling institutional hierarchies. Visito

DESCRIPTION:Our daily rhythms and most meaningful relationships center on
the dining table\, and so nothing is more essential to a good life than sa
tisfying meals with friends and family. In To Taste\, philosopher and sou
s-chef Scott Samuelson invites us into his kitchen\, where he blends movin
g personal stories with insights from some of the world’s greatest think
ers into a rich but simple argument: our daily labor\, in making food or o
therwise\, should connect us with other people. \nFor Samuelson\, the plea
sures of excellent cooking illuminate this value in particularly compellin
g ways. When we embrace the work required to prepare and share a good meal
 \, we learn to honor tradition\, practice hospitality\, respect nature\, c
herish festivity\, and nurture skill—all ethics that resist our increasi
ngly dehumanized world. Ultimately\, Samuelson argues that cooking\, espec
ially the elusive decision to season a dish “to taste\,” contains the
full mystery of human life.  Whether you’re a professional chef or your
best culinary feat involves a can opener\, To Taste can help you cook u
 p a life that elicits a glorious mmm.\n\n\n\nCredit: Sarah Kyle\nScott Sa
muelson holds a joint position at Iowa State University in Philosophy and
Religious Studies and Extension and Outreach. His books include Rome as a
Guide to the Good Life: A Philosophical Grand Tour\, also published by the
University of Chicago Press. For many years\, he worked as a sous-chef at
  a farm-to-table French restaurant.\n  \n  \nNathan Beacom of the Lyceum
Movement will join Scott in conversation.
