DESCRIPTION:Lighthouse Writers Workshop presents Hard Times Writing Worksh
 ops\, offering a creative outlet for individuals facing poverty\, addictio
 n\, homelessness and other challenges. Free and inclusive\, these library 
 workshops help participants articulate their experiences through writing a
 nd storytelling. Guided by an experienced instructor\, sessions provide pr
 ompts\, feedback\, and a supportive community\, with no prior writing expe
 rience required. Meets twice per month on the second and fourth Tuesdays\,
  3 - 5 p.m. at the Main Library.\n\nBoulder Public Library would like to t
 hank everyone who has generously donated to the Boulder Library Foundation
 . Your financial support provides funding for library programs\, services 
 and facilities that help the people of Boulder develop and grow.\n\nFourth
  Tuesday of the month: Malinda Miller is the director of news and media re
 lations at the University of Colorado Boulder\, an instructor for the Ligh
 thouse Young Writers Programs\, and a visiting artist for Poetry Outloud. 
 She feels most at home at the top of Weston Pass in Colorado or in the Nev
 ada desert where her family has a ranch just off Highway 50\, named by Lif
 e Magazine as the Loneliest Highway in America. Previously an associate ed
 itor at Many Mountains Moving\, her poetry and nonfiction has appeared in 
 A Poetic Inventory of Rocky Mountain National Park\, Colorado Life Magazin
 e\, the Mountain Gazette\, the Coloradan\, and others. She has a MFA in po
 etry from Western State Colorado University and a MA in journalism from th
 e University of Colorado Boulder.

  of the Rockies.\n\nSlam Rules and FAQ:\n\nCheck-in & Draw Time: 7:30 PM a
 t Petals and Pages\n\nPoets who do not attend the draw will be taking the 
 #1 spot! So get there on time poets!\n\nSlam Format & Rules:\n\nThe compet
 ition will be conducted in 3 rounds.\n\nRounds 1 and 2 are cumulative—sc
 ores from both rounds will be added together to determine which poets adva
 nce.\n\nRound 3 is a clean slate—finalists will start fresh with no prev
 ious scores carrying over.\n\nThe round cuts will be:\n\nRound 1: All 10 p
 oets\nRound 2: Top 5 poets\nRound 3: Top 3 poets\n\nPoets will randomly dr
 aw their performance order at check-in.\n\nTime Limit: Each poem must be 3
  minutes or less\, with a 10-second grace period. After 3:10\, time penalt
 ies will apply:\n\n3:10-3:20 = 0.5-point deduction\n3:20-3:30 = 1-point de
 duction\n3:30+ = Disqualification for the round\n\nYour time starts as soo
 n as you speak into the mic or engage with the audience.\n\nNo props\, cos
 tumes\, or musical accompaniment—the power is in your words and performa
 nce.\n\nEach poem must be original and written by the performing poet.\n\n
 Random Judges will be selected in the audience. Judges will score poets on
  content\, performance\, and overall impact on a scale of 0.0 to 10.0 (hig
 hest and lowest scores dropped\, middle three averaged).\n\nIf there is a 
 tie for the final round\, a 1 minute sudden-death round may be implemented
 .\n\nFAQ:\n\nQ: How many poets will be allowed to compete?\n\nA: There wil
 l be a total of 10 poets. First come\, first serve basis.\n\nQ: How many p
 oems should poets have prepared?\n\nA: Poets should have 3 poems under 3 m
 inutes prepared as well as one 1 minute poem.\n\nQ: Is a slam the same thi
 ng as an open mic?\n\nA: No\, a slam is a competition with judges.\n\nQ: H
