DESCRIPTION:Bringing together ten contemporary artists who utilize discard
ed materials to explore the intersections of art\, environmental activism\
, and human impact on nature\, Sequesterings challenges viewers to confron
t our world’s ecological crisis through the lens of radical transformati
on. With diverse works ranging from delicately stitched collages and color
ful hand-woven textiles to large-scale sculptures\, the artists in Sequest
erings act as environmental stewards and aesthetic scavengers. They reclai
m what society thoughtlessly discards\, transforming obsolescence into opp
ortunity.\n\nThe exhibition features work by Twyla Exner\, Calder Kamin\,
Natalya Khorover\, Blue McRight\, Anna Mein\, Kelsey Merreck Wagner\, Pame
la "Posey" Moulton\, Portia Munson\, Aurora Robson\, and Ian Trask\, whose
individual art practices unite to present a global issue on an intimate s
cale\, creating a vision of optimism within a harsh reality.\n\nSequesteri
ngs was curated by Cecily Cullen and Aurora Robson and will be on view at
 CVA August 6- October 24\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:Walking into a dance studio for the first time can feel intimi
dating. You watch experienced dancers glide across the floor and wonder if
you will ever look that comfortable. That little voice inside asks\, “W
hat if I have no rhythm? What if I step on my partner’s toes? What if ev
eryone else already knows what they are doing?” It is completely normal
to feel nervous\, but here is the truth: every single advanced dancer star
ted exactly where you are right now. They walked through the same doors\,
felt the same butterflies\, and made the same beginner mistakes.\nThe diff
erence between someone who learns to dance and someone who stays on the si
delines is not talent. It is simply the decision to take that first step.
This article will walk you through five common mistakes beginners make dur
ing their first few dance lessons\, and more importantly\, how you can avo
id them. Whether you want to learn ballroom\, Latin\, swing\, or country\,
these tips will help you feel more confident and enjoy the journey from d
ay one. \nThe 5 Common Beginner Mistakes (and How to Overcome Them)\nMista
ke 1: Staring Continuously at Your Feet\nIt is the most natural instinct i
n the world. You are learning a new step\, your brain is working overtime\
, and you want to make sure your feet land exactly where they should. So y
ou look down\, and you keep looking down. The problem is that staring at y
our feet actually throws off your balance. When your head drops\, your sho
ulders hunch forward\, and your center of gravity shifts. Instead of feeli
ng the music and moving as one unit\, you become stiff and top-heavy. \nTh
e solution: Train your eyes to look up. Pick a spot on the wall at eye lev
el or focus on your partner’s shoulder or face. When you lift your gaze\
, your posture automatically improves\, and your body can relax into the m
ovement. You will quickly discover that your feet know more than you think
\, and trusting your body is the first step to dancing with confidence. In
structors at Colorado DanceSport encourage this from the very first lesson
\, because looking up is the fastest way to build real balance and connect
ion with the music. \nMistake 2: Expecting Too Much\, Too Fast\nYou watch
a YouTube video or see a couple performing a flawless tango\, and you want
to dance like that by next week. But dancing is a physical skill\, and ph
ysical skills require repetition and patience. Your brain needs time to bu
ild muscle memory. Expecting perfection in your first few lessons sets you
up for unnecessary frustration and can even make you want to quit. \nThe
solution: Embrace the learning process as part of the fun. Progress in dan
ce is rarely a straight line. Some moves click instantly\, while others ta
ke weeks to feel natural. Celebrate small wins\, like maintaining a steady
rhythm or remembering a new pattern without your instructor’s guidance.
Colorado DanceSport structures its beginner lessons so that you walk away
with at least one achievable win every session. That feeling of progress\
, no matter how small\, keeps you motivated and coming back for more. \nMi
stake 3: Apologizing Constantly to Your Partner or Teacher\n“I’m sorry
!” “Oh\, I messed up again.” “Sorry\, I stepped on you.” This is
the most common verbal habit new dancers develop\, and it does more harm
than good. Apologizing every time you make a mistake puts you in a negativ
e headspace and can make your partner feel like they need to reassure you
instead of focusing on the dance. \nThe solution: Reframe mistakes as info
rmation. Every misstep tells you something: your weight transfer was off\,
you rushed the beat\, or your frame broke. That is not a failure\; it is
simply data to adjust for the next try. There are no mistakes in learning\
, only adjustments. Your instructor and partner are there to help you impr
ove\, not to judge you. At Colorado DanceSport\, the environment is suppor
tive and judgment-free\, so you can relax and know that every stumble is j
ust a natural part of the process. Swap “I’m sorry” for “Okay\, le
t me try that again\,” and watch your confidence grow. \nMistake 4: Wear
ing the Wrong Footwear\nWhat you wear on your feet can make or break your
first dance lesson. Running shoes with thick rubber soles will stick to th
e floor and prevent you from turning or gliding smoothly. Flip-flops offer
no support and are a safety hazard. High heels without practice may throw
off your balance entirely. Many beginners show up in gym shoes and wonder
why they feel clunky and unable to pivot. \nThe solution: Choose shoes th
at allow your feet to slide just a little. Flat leather-soled shoes\, sued
e dance sneakers\, or comfortable dress shoes work well. If you are a woma
n starting out\, a low\, stable heel or a flat with a smooth sole is ideal
. You do not need expensive dance shoes right away. Just make sure your fo
otwear does not grip the floor like Velcro. Colorado DanceSport’s instru
ctors can give you specific recommendations based on the style you want to
learn\, so you start your lesson feeling prepared and safe. \nMistake 5:
Believing You Must Have “Natural Rhythm” to Start\nThis may be the mos
t damaging belief of all. Many people assume that rhythm is something you
are born with\, either you have it or you do not. Nothing could be further
from the truth. Rhythm is a learned skill\, just like riding a bike or ty
ping on a keyboard. It is a mechanical understanding of timing and weight
changes that can be taught step by step. \nThe solution: Trust that your i
nstructor can teach you rhythm. At Colorado DanceSport\, beginner lessons
break music down into simple counts\, focusing on basic weight transfers b
efore adding steps. You will learn to hear the beat\, feel the pulse\, and
move your body in time\, even if you have never done it before. Countless
students who walked in claiming they had “two left feet” have become
confident dancers through patient instruction. The key is to let go of the
idea that rhythm is a gift and accept it as a skill you can develop. \n \
nPhoto by Anna on Pexels\n\nThe Colorado DanceSport Experience: A Safe Pla
ce to Learn\nColorado DanceSport in Denver and Littleton is built on the b
elief that anyone can learn to dance. The studio specializes in teaching b
eginners from scratch\, whether you come alone\, with a partner\, or as pa
rt of a group. Private lessons and group classes are available in ballroom
 \, Latin\, country\, swing\, and wedding choreography\, and no partner is
ever required. Every step is broken down into simple\, achievable blocks s
o that even your first lesson ends with a real sense of accomplishment. \n
Instructors at Colorado DanceSport know that the biggest barrier for most
new dancers is fear\, not ability. That is why the atmosphere is warm\, en
couraging\, and completely free of judgment. Whether you are learning a ba
sic box step in a private lesson or joining a beginner group class\, you w
ill be surrounded by people who understand exactly how you feel. The studi
o’s inclusive approach makes it the perfect place to take those first br
ave steps. \nThe biggest mistake of all is not stepping on your partner’
s foot or forgetting a pattern. The biggest mistake is letting fear keep y
ou sitting on the sidelines when you could be out on the floor\, moving to
music and having fun. You have already taken the first step by reading th
is article. Now it is time to take the next one. Explore Colorado DanceSpo
rt’s beginner-friendly introductory packages\, check out the class calen
dar\, and fill out the contact form to reserve your first low-pressure\, i
ntroductory private lesson today. Your dance journey starts with one step.

\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nDo I need a partner to take beginner dance
lessons?\nNo. Many studios\, including Colorado DanceSport\, encourage be
ginners to come alone. Group classes often rotate partners so you can lear
n with different people\, and private lessons are one-on-one with an instr
uctor. You will never be turned away because you do not have a partner. \n
What should I wear to my first dance lesson?\nWear comfortable clothing th
at allows you to move freely\, such as a t-shirt and pants or a skirt. Cho
ose shoes with smooth soles that slide easily on the floor. Avoid thick ru
bber-soled athletic shoes or sandals. Your instructor can advise on proper
footwear once you begin. \nHow long does it take to become a good dancer?
\nThere is no fixed timeline\, but most beginners see noticeable improveme
nt after just a few lessons. Rhythm and muscle memory develop with regular
practice. The key is to enjoy each step of the learning process rather th
an rushing toward a distant goal. Consistency matters more than natural ta
 lent.

Consistency matters more than natural ta
 lent.

Consistency matters more than natural ta
 lent.

Consistency matters more than natural ta
 lent.

DESCRIPTION:The Enlightened Hot Mess is a sexy comedy with a storyline. It
’s an unfiltered\, raw\, and unapologetic journey through midlife mayhem
 \, chaos\, and self-empowerment. Helene Rose explores feminine self-expres
sion and reclaims the dark inner goddess. She leaves behind her old life t
o begin again. This time\, she refuses to settle\, redefining who she thou
ght she was and who the world told her to be. As she reclaims her voice an
d her power\, this relatable and irreverent show entertains and empowers a
udiences to question their own lives and step into themselves as powerful
creators. Laughing releases resistance. Just like orgasms. Expect to get d
irty. \nWritten & Performed by Helene Rose\, Debuted at the Denver Fringe
 Festival June 2026 \nReviews\n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“An exuberant performer w
ith an infectious energy. High school math’s loss is comedy’s gain.”
\n— Mike \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“Helene is as relatable as she is hysteric
al. She is raw\, real and so brave and I loved watching her embrace her co
conut oiled inner goddess on stage!!!”\n— Angela Astle \n⭐⭐⭐⭐
⭐\n“Bring a date and have some laughs! Helene is genuinely hilarious i
n her new comedy show! A truly original show that had us smiling\, laughin
g\, gasping\, and crying throughout. P.S. BYO coconut oil.”\n— Rese Da
vidson \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“If you ever wanted to see a show that makes y
ou ponder your past\, present\, and future—while at the same time making
you laugh hysterically at unthinkable subject matter—catch Helene Rose
and The Enlightened Hot Mess. It will be one of the most enjoyable 60 minu
tes you’ll spend. Her comedic insight on women’s feelings and actions\
, while keeping a tight rein on the male perspective\, is absolutely hilar
ious. Leave the kiddies at home and come down for a wild ride… I guarant
ee you’ll be discussing it for weeks.”\n— HAD \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“
Hilarious and full of heart!”\n— Derek James \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“If
there is anyone who can make us laugh at how life treats us\, it’s Helen
 e. Her challenges are our challenges. Her joy is our joy. I’ve been fort
unate enough to experience the evolution of her show\, and you too will be
sucked in by her energy and her hilarious ways of facing each day.”\n
 — Jennifer Hill \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“For a good time\, go see The Enlig
htened Hot Mess! Helene Rose is saucy\, spicy\, and wildly entertaining! B
 e prepared for a high-energy\, yet thought-provoking show.”\n— A.R.B.
\n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“Helene’s show is full of heart\, humor\, and chutz
pah! If you’re looking for a life-affirming mix of dirty and honest\, th
is is it.”\n— Pam \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“Sharp\, fearless\, and unexpec
tedly perceptive\, Helene turns everyday absurdities into brilliantly time
d comedy. Her humor is irreverent without feeling forced\, and beneath the
punchlines is real insight about people\, relationships\, and modern life
. Equal parts chaotic and intelligent\, she keeps the audience laughing wh
ile actually making them think.”\n— Jig \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“I recent
ly attended a performance of Helene Rose’s The Enlightened Hot Mess. Thi
 s show has everything: self-empowerment\, meditation\, reclamation\, and s
tories about oral sex. It makes for a very interesting and entertaining ev
 ening.”\n— John Novosad \n⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\n“Helene is God-sent! Pun
intended. Despite being shamefully tardy to her show\, I was immediately s
trapped in and along for the ride. Her enlightened aura captivated me and
then flooded me with all the NSFW comedy my spirit didn’t know it needed
 . Sprint\, don’t run\, to all things Helene!”\n— Edda Saenz \nPROMO

DESCRIPTION:The Matt Skellenger/Matt Reid Duo joins forces with Perpetual
Motion for an evening of instrumental music that moves freely between jazz
 \, world music\, acoustic fusion\, groove\, and improvisation on Friday\,
Sept. 18 at Swallow Hill Music. The show starts at 8:00 pm. Tickets are av
 ailable at https://swallowhillmusic.org/events/MattSkellengerDuoandPerpetu
alMotion/ \nThe Matt Skellenger/Matt Reid Duo brings a different sonic pal
ette to the evening. Bassist Matt Skellenger and trumpeter Matt Reid combi
 ne jazz\, fusion\, funk\, world music\, electronic textures\, and live loo
ping. Their music can move from deep grooves to spacious\, exploratory pas
sages\, with the two musicians building a surprisingly expansive sound fro
 m just bass\, trumpet\, effects\, and loops. \nJosie Quick (violin) and To
m Carleno (guitar) have been performing together as Perpetual Motion for m
ore than two decades. Their music combines the intimacy of a violin-and-gu
itar duo with an expansive musical vocabulary shaped by jazz\, folk\, worl
d music\, and contemporary instrumental music. Their performances feature
 intricate arrangements\, rhythmic interplay\, improvisation\, and plenty o
f room for the unexpected. The duo recently released their eighth studio a
lbum\, Go With The Flow\, their first new album in seven years. \nAlthough
the two duos approach their music from very different directions\, they s
hare a love of improvisation and the possibilities of the duo format. Both
create music through close musical interaction\, allowing compositions to
breathe and evolve in performance. \nThe concert will also mark the debut
of a very personal new instrument for Quick: a violin made by Denver-area
luthier Eric Trujillo of Mi Vida Strings. The wood has an unusual story.
A large silver maple that stood in Quick’s front yard for years was stru
ck by lightning and eventually died. Rather than letting the tree disappea
r\, Quick had Trujillo transform some of its wood into a violin. \nTrujill
o named the instrument the “Fire Tree” violin\, a reference to the lig
htning strike that began its journey from living tree to musical instrumen
 t. Quick plans to play the violin during the Swallow Hill performance\, gi
ving the concert another connection between music\, nature\, and transform
ation. \n“It’s pretty amazing to think that this tree that was part of
my everyday life is now going to have a new life as an instrument\,” sa
ys Quick. “I’m really looking forward to hearing what it has to say.
” \nCome hear two distinctive Denver instrumental duos share the stage a
t Swallow Hill for an evening of music that crosses boundaries.
