DESCRIPTION:The Matt Skellenger/Matt Reid Duo joins forces with Perpetual
Motion for an evening of instrumental music that moves freely between jazz
 \, world music\, acoustic fusion\, groove\, and improvisation on Friday\,
Sept. 18 at Swallow Hill Music. The show starts at 8:00 pm. Tickets are av
 ailable at https://swallowhillmusic.org/events/MattSkellengerDuoandPerpetu
alMotion/ \nThe Matt Skellenger/Matt Reid Duo brings a different sonic pal
ette to the evening. Bassist Matt Skellenger and trumpeter Matt Reid combi
 ne jazz\, fusion\, funk\, world music\, electronic textures\, and live loo
ping. Their music can move from deep grooves to spacious\, exploratory pas
sages\, with the two musicians building a surprisingly expansive sound fro
 m just bass\, trumpet\, effects\, and loops. \nJosie Quick (violin) and To
m Carleno (guitar) have been performing together as Perpetual Motion for m
ore than two decades. Their music combines the intimacy of a violin-and-gu
itar duo with an expansive musical vocabulary shaped by jazz\, folk\, worl
d music\, and contemporary instrumental music. Their performances feature
 intricate arrangements\, rhythmic interplay\, improvisation\, and plenty o
f room for the unexpected. The duo recently released their eighth studio a
lbum\, Go With The Flow\, their first new album in seven years. \nAlthough
the two duos approach their music from very different directions\, they s
hare a love of improvisation and the possibilities of the duo format. Both
create music through close musical interaction\, allowing compositions to
breathe and evolve in performance. \nThe concert will also mark the debut
of a very personal new instrument for Quick: a violin made by Denver-area
luthier Eric Trujillo of Mi Vida Strings. The wood has an unusual story.
A large silver maple that stood in Quick’s front yard for years was stru
ck by lightning and eventually died. Rather than letting the tree disappea
r\, Quick had Trujillo transform some of its wood into a violin. \nTrujill
o named the instrument the “Fire Tree” violin\, a reference to the lig
htning strike that began its journey from living tree to musical instrumen
 t. Quick plans to play the violin during the Swallow Hill performance\, gi
ving the concert another connection between music\, nature\, and transform
ation. \n“It’s pretty amazing to think that this tree that was part of
my everyday life is now going to have a new life as an instrument\,” sa
ys Quick. “I’m really looking forward to hearing what it has to say.
” \nCome hear two distinctive Denver instrumental duos share the stage a
t Swallow Hill for an evening of music that crosses boundaries.
