DESCRIPTION:In summer 2026\, Hannah Arendt’s book The Origins of Totalit
 arianism was\, for the first time\, published in a critical edition. This 
 edition contains the final versions of the book in English and German\, wi
 th a scholarly apparatus and detailed annotations. It also includes earlie
 r drafts of Arendt’s texts\, as well as a comprehensive collection of es
 says\, reviews\, lectures\, exposés\, and typescripts from her archives. 
 The presentation will highlight the advantages of the critical edition and
  discuss the timeliness of Arendt’s book. How does a critical edition di
 ffer from a ‘regular’ edition? How can this edition make new readings 
 and interpretations of Arendt’s seminal work possible? In what ways can 
 we relate her analysis of antisemitism\, imperialism\, and totalitarianism
  to the contemporary world?\n\nPresentation by the editors of the book (An
 nette Vowinckel\, Hanno Berger\, Christian Pischel\, Elena Stingl). Welcom
 ing remarks by Dr. Mark Celinscak. There will be a pre-event reception in 
 the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies (JO 4.800)\, which is near the e
 vent location.\n\nThis event is being presented by the Ackerman Center for
  Holocaust Studies free of charge\, but registration is required via this

 d by your permit. \n\nAbout Arendt’s book:\n\nThe spring of 2026 marked 
 the 75th anniversary of the publication of Hannah Arendt's “The Origins 
 of Totalitarianism\,” a work that continues to resonate as a foundationa
 l text in the study of totalitarian regimes. Dealing with the histories of
  antisemitism\, imperialism\, Stalinism\, and National Socialism\, the boo
 k itself looks back on an eventful history: initially celebrated as a grou
 ndbreaking contribution to the historiography of totalitarian regimes\, it
  was defamed as an anti-communist piece of propaganda during the Cold War
 –not merely by Stalinists inside and outside the Socialist bloc\, but al
 so by a wide range of leftist activists in the West.\n\nFollowing the coll
 apse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall\, “The Origins 
 of Totalitarianism” experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity\, 
 catapulting Arendt to a position of almost universal recognition across th
 e political spectrum. From conservative thinkers to progressive liberals\,
  many individuals across the ideological spectrum have acknowledged its en
 during significance in shaping mid-20th-century intellectual thought. Foll
 owing Donald Trump's election as 45th President of the United States in 20
 16\, the book experienced a resurgence in popularity among readers. Howeve
 r\, the book’s examination of imperialism – particularly concerning Bl
 ack African history – has also triggered substantial criticism.
