. The Cedar Hill Action Team (C.H.A.T.)\, under the direction of Executive
Director Clara McGinnis\, is one of them. By providing educational\, recr

longing\, C.H.A.T. enhances Cedar Hill’s fabric through programs for bot
 h young people and senior individuals. \n \n \n \n
 																						\n \n \n \n This project has a very
personal core. Clara remembers the night a young boy knocked on her door
after 10:30 p.m. in search of food. She was aware of the difficulties fami
lies encounter in meeting basic needs because she was a working single par

 				\n \n \n In Cedar Hill\, Texas\, the nonprofit now provi
des services to both young people and the elderly. C.H.A.T. offers educati

rough collaborations with the Cedar Hill Independent School District\, an
active presence at the Alan E. Sims Recreation Center\, and participation
in neighborhood events. In addition to providing for immediate needs\, the
ir initiatives create connections within the community and pave the road f

 					\n \n \n \n North Texas Giving Day offers C.H.A.T. e
xposure\, interaction\, and the opportunity to increase impact. Donations
support the nonprofit’s operating expenses\, enabling them to continue m

DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 disrupted not only everyday life but also familiar wa
ys of commemorating loss. Rather than developing sequentially from tempora
ry memorials to permanent monuments\, pandemic remembrance emerged simulta
neously across spontaneous\, digital\, documentary\, and monumental forms.
Drawing on examples from the United States and transnational contexts\, t
his lecture examines how COVID-19 memorials reshape established practices
of public mourning. It considers how digital participation broadens access
to commemoration\, blurs distinctions between temporary and permanent mem
orial forms\, and enables societies to remember a crisis while it is still
unfolding.\n\nIngrid Gessner is Professor of English and American Studies
at the University of Education Vorarlberg in Feldkirch\, Austria. She ser
ves as President of the European Association for American Studies (2024-20
 28) and as International Delegate of the Austrian Association for American
Studies. Her interdisciplinary scholarship spans visual culture studies\,
gender studies\, and cultural memory. She is the author of Yellow Fever Y
ears: An Epidemiology of Nineteenth-Century Literature (2016)\, for which
she received the Peter Lang Young Scholars Award\, as well as The Vietnam
Veterans Memorial in Public Controversy (2000) and the award-winning From
Sites of Memory to Cybersights: (Re)Framing Japanese American Experiences
(2007). She has published widely on environmental and medical humanities a

DESCRIPTION:Title: Addressing Unmeasured Confounding in Observational Stud
ies: Advances with Negative Control Methods and Proximal Causal Inference\
n\nAbstract: Unmeasured confounding remains one of the most significant th
reats to the credibility of findings from observational studies. Recent de
velopments in negative control methods\, also known as proximal causal inf
erence\, offer promising strategies to strengthen causal conclusions. Thes
e approaches leverage negative controls —variables that have no direct c
ausal relationship with either the exposure or the outcome — to detect a
nd adjust for unmeasured confounding. In this talk\, I will review the fou
ndations of negative control methods and introduce the double negative con
trol framework. I will then present our recent work extending this framewo
rk to settings where some candidate negative control variables may themsel
ves be invalid. I will conclude with a discussion of open challenges and f
 uture research directions.

DESCRIPTION:Free\, Hybrid Event ↗ \n\nDon't miss the Frontiers of Brai
nHealth fall season opener!\n\nThe Metabolic Brain: How Obesity and Diabet
es Alter Blood Flow\, Oxygen Metabolism and the Blood-Brain Barrier — Fr
ontiers of BrainHealth Lecture \n\nBinu Thomas\, PhD – Assistant Profess
or at the Advanced Imaging Research Center\, Dept. of Biomedical Engineeri
ng and Dept. of Radiology\, UT Southwestern\n\nObesity and type 2 diabetes
are increasingly recognized as important risk factors for cognitive decli
ne and dementia\, but how metabolic dysfunction affects the brain remains
incompletely understood. This talk explores how obesity and diabetes alter
key aspects of brain physiology\, including cerebral blood flow\, oxygen
extraction\, and blood-brain barrier function. Using advanced\, noninvasiv
e MRI methods\, Dr. Thomas' studies reveal that brain function in older ad
ults with type 2 diabetes and obesity are associated with glycemic control
and cognitive function. He also presents preliminary findings that examin
e whether weight loss and improvement in diabetes may reverse or normalize
some of these brain changes. Together\, this work highlights the cerebrov
ascular system as an important link between metabolic health and brain hea
lth and raises the possibility that some diabetes- and obesity-related bra
in abnormalities may be modifiable.\n\nHost: TBA \n\nNote on Speaker Chang

 					\n \n \n \n North Texas Giving Day offers C.H.A.T. e

DESCRIPTION:Understanding Self & Others is a weekly interpersonal process
group for students who want to explore personal growth and increase self-a
wareness to enhance their experiences in personal and academic settings. I
n this safe space\, group members can practice communicating more honestly
and effectively with others while gaining support from peers. Group topic
 s may include adjustment\, loneliness\, academic/general stress\, and rela
tionships.\n \n\nProcess groups are focused on the exploration and open pr
ocessing and discussion of participants. Process groups are led by one of
our therapists and typically more open-ended and less structured around a
specific lesson or topic for the day. Clients are required to complete a g
roup screening to assess whether the group matches their needs and interes
t.\n\nFor process groups\, if you are not a current or recent client\, ple
ase make an appointment to get started and note your interest in group the
rapy. You’ll complete intake paperwork and have a 30-minute “IC” (in
dividual consultation) with one of our therapists\, and then get scheduled
for a brief screening meeting with the group’s leader.\n\nIf you are a
current or recent client\, reach out to our Groups & Workshops Coordinator
at sccgroups@utdallas.edu to schedule a screening meeting.
