DESCRIPTION:This Foreign Policy Forum is made possible by support from the
Bickford Fund. \nThe mass internment of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims
in China’s Xinjiang region has been described by many nations as crimes
against humanity\, if not genocide. What began as a significant human righ
ts concern has also become a trade and commercial one: Xinjiang is a major
global source of raw materials and components that are used in products w
orldwide. With the passage of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act in 20
21\, U.S. importers now face a legal presumption that goods with ties to t
he region are made with forced labor. Supply chain due diligence now sits
at the intersection of human rights\, national security\, and everyday bus
iness practice. \nCCWA is honored to be joined by Nury Turkel\, one of the
world’s leading voices on Uyghur human rights\, to discuss the crisis i
n Xinjiang and its implications for the global economy. How did a regional
campaign of repression become embedded in international supply chains? Wh
at leverage do companies\, consumers\, and governments have to pressure Ch
ina into reforms? \nNury Turkel is an attorney\, author\, and human rights
advocate\, and the first U.S.-educated Uyghur-American lawyer. Born in a
re-education camp during China’s Cultural Revolution\, he came to the Un
ited States in 1995 and was later granted asylum. He co-founded the Uyghur
Human Rights Project\, and served as a Commissioner on the U.S. Commissio
n on International Religious Freedom from 2020 to 2024\, including as Chai
r from 2022 to 2023. His recommendations were incorporated into both the U
yghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020 and the Uyghur Forced Labor Preventi
on Act of 2021. His law practice focuses on export controls\, economic san
ctions\, and supply chain due diligence. He is the author of No Escape: Th
e True Story of China’s Genocide of the Uyghurs\, winner of the 2023 Moo
re Prize for Human Rights Writing\, and was named to the TIME 100 in 2020
 and Fortune’s World’s 50 Greatest Leaders in 2021. \n\nPlease note tha
t this event will be held at the Martin L. King Branch of the Cleveland Pu
 blic Library. All are welcome!

DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Adrienne Krone for an thought-provoking exploration o
f Judaism’s enduring connection to the land and the natural world. From
ancient agricultural traditions to contemporary conversations about enviro
nmental responsibility\, this program traces how the cycles of planting\,
harvest\, and gratitude have shaped Jewish life for generations. \nAt the
center of the discussion is Sukkot\, the Jewish harvest festival\, a holid
ay that invites reflection on abundance\, vulnerability\, and our relation
ship with the earth. Drawing on her expertise in religion and environmenta
l studies\, Dr. Krone will explore the rich symbolism of Sukkot\, from the
temporary shelter of the sukkah to the ritual of the Four Species\, and c
onsider what these longstanding traditions can teach us about sustainabili
 ty\, stewardship\, and community today. \nAlong the way\, we’ll explore
some larger questions: How do religious traditions shape the way we unders
tand and care for the natural world? What wisdom can ancient agricultural
practices offer in the face of modern environmental challenges? And how ca
n seasonal rituals help us cultivate gratitude\, responsibility\, and a de
eper connection to the world around us? \nWhether you’re deeply familiar
with Jewish traditions or simply curious about the intersection of faith\
, culture\, and the environment\, this program offers a meaningful perspec
tive on the season of harvest\, reflection\, and renewal.
