DESCRIPTION:Ron Athey – Marquis Von Bayros – Rachael Bos – Jamie Fle
tcher – Danny Frownfelter – Norbert Kox – Bill Lilly – Monika Plio
plyte – Sun Ra – Philipp Schopke – Jon Serl – Bronislaw “Bruno
 ” Sowa – Maria Vanik – Jean Wilson – Albert Zahn\n  \nPray\, carv
e\, bleed\, sing. Insist that to look death in the face\, ritually and rep
eatedly\, is how one kisses life on the lips. This is magic understood pla
inly: not sleight of hand\, but the discipline of transformation\, and rel
igion in its most degraded form. \nThe sacred\, in this view\, is not piet
 y but rupture: sacrifice\, ecstasy\, laughter\, daemonic entities\, and th
e corpse. Death here is not simply a subject but a method. Art becomes the
site where the restricted economy of production and survival is deliberat
ely breached\, where a sovereign act of wasting oneself – bleeding\, pra
ying\, dancing\, carving toward no useful end – recovers a continuity be
tween beings that ordinary\, bounded selfhood forecloses. The works gather
ed here stage exactly this breach: each refuses the discreteness the self
is supposed to maintain\, offering itself instead as a willful expenditure
\, a controlled burn of the prairie’s boundary – on the border where t
he living meet the dead. \nBeneath that scorched wound runs a river. Death
is not an event waiting at the end of a life but a force already coursing
through it. A pure differentiation\, the self already a multiplicity bein
g continuously undone and reassembled beneath its own name. This current t
reats the human not as a form to be preserved but as a threshold to be lau
ghed at\, dissolved\, desire and death fused into a single accelerant burn
ing through identity toward what is on the other side. This exhibition’s
icons are not meditations on mortality\, they are remnants of mortality
’s discharge\, operations and apparatuses built by hand\, and by body\,
to run the current of death through the self on purpose – not to master
it\, but to see\, however briefly\, who or what rears its head from beneat
 h the surface. \n  \nOpening reception:\nAugust 7\, 2026\n5-8pm \n  \nCX
 W hours with the guest curator:\nSeptember 17\, 2026\n5:00 – 8:00 pm \nT
his exhibition runs through September 25\, 2026. \n******Guest curated by

r and curator based in Chicago\, IL. His artworks have been exhibited at t

DESCRIPTION:Veteran Illinois artist Mike Baur has been creating sculptural
works in the Chicago area since 1976. His pieces are featured in numerous
public spaces and museum collections\, including two works held by the Ko
ehnline Museum of Art. This exhibition showcases sculptures inspired by th
e textures and forms of natural landscapes—often vast expanses interrupt
ed by both organic and industrial elements. Baur’s work offers abstract
interpretations of these environments\, frequently suggesting a horizontal
orientation that reflects how natural forces can subdue vertical structur
 es.\n\n \n\nThe Public Reception takes place on Thursday\, July 2\, 5 - 8

DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays\, 11am\, weekly \nNew research finds that exercise (s
uch as dance\, Tai Chi\, and boxing) can be beneficial for people with neu
rological conditions\, such as Parkinson’s disease\, helping improve mov
ement\, balance\, and cognition. JCC Chicago has been proud to offer Movin
g to Health for Parkinson’s\, using the Nia Technique\, as a free progra
m to our community for the past 10 years. \nThe program is a sensory-based
movement practice that draws on dance\, martial arts\, and healing arts s
uch as Yoga and Feldenkrais. \nThe class is appropriate for all ages and a
bilities\, paired with music to create a fun environment\, via Zoom from t
he comfort of your home. You do what you can based on how you’re feeling
and what you need to become your best self. \n“Even on zoom\, the class
provided a social break to accompany my desperately needed exercise. I am
grateful for having Sara and her class.” – L.B. \nEspecially because
I am mobility limited\, I look forward to my NIA exercise sessions with S
ara Shafran. She exudes a sense of welcoming and enthusiasm that make it a
joy for me to be part of the group. By the end of our sessions\, I feel t
hat every muscle in my body has had its chance to be gently stretched and
strengthened while the smiles on my face and inside of me stay on to help
keep me going. I very much appreciate that the JCC makes these sessions av
ailable live online as I would have great difficulty in reaching them in p
erson.” – Fred \n\n \nRegistration is required. You can register for 1
week or multiple weeks per month in a single transaction. The Zoom link t
o join will be included in your confirmation email. Please make sure to sa
ve your emails so you have access to the link. \nAbout our Instructor:\nSa
ra Shafran began her journey teaching Nia and whole-body fitness in 2001.
She received her Nia Black Belt in 2014\, her Nia\, Moving to Heal certifi
cation in 2019\, and is also a certified Yoga Instructor. She has been wor
king at the JCC since 2017. Learn more about Sara on her website: miracle

DESCRIPTION:From the organizer’s website:  \nWhat will have been neolib
eralism? At a moment when this question has become pressing\, Study Withou
t Ends seeks answers in the cultural politics and political cultures of th
ose Latin American societies that served as its laboratory. Drawing from a
esthetic theory and heterodox Marxism\, Bret Leraul studies neoliberal cul
ture in the Southern Cone through the educational infrastructures that dis
seminate and reproduce it. From wide-ranging readings of the university\,
 social movements\, literature\, and criticism\, Leraul proposes a theory o
f cultural production and social transformation grounded in everyday pract
 ices of nourishment\, care\, maintenance\, and repair\, what he calls “s
tudy without ends.” \nStudy Without Ends uncovers the university’s rol
e in contemporary literature in the Southern Cone to argue that poetics to
day is less about crafting works and more about instructing a readership.
By highlighting literature’s primordially pedagogical function\, Leraul
reminds us that education too is a poetic process of becoming\, despite th
e neoliberal university’s attempt to reduce it to human capital investme
nt. By analyzing the organization of autonomous social movements\, he sugg
ests that a politics of study as reproductive labor has the capacity to in
stitute radical change. Study Without Ends shows how shifts in university
cultures during the neoliberal era reflect the current crisis of social re
production often figured as precarious\, informal\, or surplus populations
\, for it is precisely Latin America’s precarious\, informal\, and surpl
us peoples who have wagered the future on a profoundly cultural remaking o
f the world. \n\nBio:  \nBret Leraul is associate professor of comparativ
e humanities at Bucknell University. He is the English-language translator
of Chilean philosopher Willy Thayer’s The Non-Modern Crisis of the Mode
 rn University (Northwestern 2025).

DESCRIPTION:Guarneri Hall presents the complex world of Sergei Prokofiev t
hrough the lens of his nine piano sonatas. From biting modernism to wartim
e introspection\, this three-part series traces a musical and cultural evo
lution\, exploring the rarely discussed Russian Avant-Garde of the early t
wentieth century. \n\n\n\n\nFreedom and Irony reflects on the years surrou
nding the Russian Revolution. As Prokofiev prepared to leave Russia in 191
8\, the visionary theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold gave him a copy of h
is journal “The Love for Three Oranges\,” based on Carlo Gozzi’s fan
tastical play. Prokofiev read it en route to the United States\, drawn to
its blend of satire\, absurdity\, and fairy tale. This moment captures the
tension between departure and connection. As Prokofiev left his country i
n turmoil\, he carried with him artistic ties that would continue to shape
his compositional style. \n\n\n\nA sense of displacement and evolving ide
ntity echo across the evening’s programming. Known as the sonata “From
Old Notebooks\,” the youthful volatility of Piano Sonata No. 3 is contr
asted with the introspective\, shadowed character of Piano Sonata No. 4\,
reflecting a composer grappling with memory\, loss\, and reinvention durin
g exile. Decades later\, the explosive intensity of Piano Sonata No. 7 was
forged under the pressures of Stalinist Russia and received the Stalin Pr
ize. \n\n\n\nThe program will be hosted by Tanya Landau\, PhD candidate in
the department of Musicology at Northwestern University with opening rema
rks from Dassia N. Posner\, Associate Professor of Theatre and Slavic Lang
uages and Literatures at Northwestern University. \n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\nS

DESCRIPTION:Fitting in and standing out is an eternal rite of passage for
teenagers. Increasingly\, their struggles to establish hierarchies and reg
ulate social norms fall under a single umbrella: bullying. The problem is
considered so significant that all fifty states have passed anti-bullying
legislation\, and many schools now run prevention programs promoting toler
ance\, kindness\, and bystander intervention. Yet bullying remains as wide
spread as ever. Why? \nIn The Tolerance Generation: Growing Up Online in
the Anti-Bullying Era\, sociologist Sarah Miller\, Ph.D.\, finds the answe
r in a challenge unique to today’s teens: social media. Drawing on two s
chool years alongside students at a Northeastern high school\, Miller reve
als how institutional efforts to curb bullying are no match for the online
interactions where it now thrives. She follows teens as they navigate not
only bullying but sexting exposures\, school-shooting threats\, and viral
cancel culture\, and shows how anti-bullying campaigns built to address i
solated incidents fail to change the culture that produces harm\, or to pr
otect the marginalized students most often targeted. \nMiller is an assis
tant professor of sociology\, jointly appointed with the Women’s\, Gende
r\, and Sexuality Studies Program\, at Boston University. She will be in c
onversation with Matt Rafalow\, Ph.D.\, a sociologist and senior staff res
earcher at Google (YouTube)\, as well as a research fellow at the Universi
