 e introspection\, this three-part series traces a musical and cultural evo
 lution\, exploring the rarely discussed Russian Avant-Garde of the early t
 wentieth century. \n\n\n\n\nLove and War begins with Prokofiev’s Piano S
 onata No. 1\, highlighting an early infatuation with Russian traditions in
 fluenced by his training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Nikolai 
 Tcherepnin and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.  \n\n\n\nProkofiev’s Piano Sonat
 a No. 2 was premiered in Moscow in 1914 with the composer at the piano. He
  dedicated the work to his friend and fellow student at the St. Petersburg
  Conservatory\, Maximilian Schmidthof\, who committed suicide in 1913.  \n
 \n\n\nPiano Sonata No. 6\, the first of Prokofiev’s “War Sonatas\,” 
 closes the evening. Written in 1939\, three years after his return to the 
 Soviet Union\, Prokofiev’s No. 6 is driven by an undercurrent of unease 
 that reflects on uncertainty and violence at the start of the Second World
  War. \n\n\n\nLove and War is  hosted by Tanya Landau\, PhD candidate in 
 the department of Musicology at Northwestern University with opening remar

 wentieth century. \n\n\n\n\nFreedom and Irony reflects on the years surrou
 nding the Russian Revolution. As Prokofiev prepared to leave Russia in 191
 8\, the visionary theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold gave him a copy of h
 is journal “The Love for Three Oranges\,” based on Carlo Gozzi’s fan
 tastical play. Prokofiev read it en route to the United States\, drawn to 
 its blend of satire\, absurdity\, and fairy tale. This moment captures the
  tension between departure and connection. As Prokofiev left his country i
 n turmoil\, he carried with him artistic ties that would continue to shape
  his compositional style. \n\n\n\nA sense of displacement and evolving ide
 ntity echo across the evening’s programming. Known as the sonata “From
  Old Notebooks\,” the youthful volatility of Piano Sonata No. 3 is contr
 asted with the introspective\, shadowed character of Piano Sonata No. 4\, 
 reflecting a composer grappling with memory\, loss\, and reinvention durin
 g exile. Decades later\, the explosive intensity of Piano Sonata No. 7 was
  forged under the pressures of Stalinist Russia and received the Stalin Pr
 ize. \n\n\n\nThe program will be hosted by Tanya Landau\, PhD candidate in

  touring internationally as a pianist and composer before returning to the
  Soviet Union despite the growing artistic censorship of Stalin’s regime
 .  \n\n\n\nIn contrast\, the expansive Piano Sonata No. 8 (1944) and the 
 enigmatic Piano Sonata No. 9 (1947)\, both written after his return to the
  Soviet Union\, reveal a markedly different artistic landscape: more intro
 spective\, complex\, and shaped by the socio-political pressures of life b
 ack home. Together\, these three works trace Prokofiev’s life from exile
  to return\, as his compositional language and identity evolved in his fin
 al contributions to the piano sonata genre.  \n\n\n\nThe program will be
