DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition\n\n\n"Press & Pull: A Legacy of the Rober
t Blackburn Printmaking Workshop" surveys the origins\, collaboration and
technical innovation of the U.S.’s oldest and continuously operating coo
perative workshop. Founded in 1947 by artist\, educator\, and master print
er Robert Blackburn (1920–2003)\, the workshop arose during an era of ra
cial segregation when artists of color had limited opportunities and from
the dissolution of the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project (
1935–43)\, which had supported community art centers across the country\
, including Chicago’s South Side Community Art Center. Blackburn filled
the void with the Printmaking Workshop\, creating a shared space for racia
l integration and collective creativity.\n\n"Press & Pull" traces this his
tory through 38 prints made at the Blackburn Printmaking Workshop\, archiv
al ephemera and video drawn from its archive. Woven into the exhibition ar
e an additional 45 prints that identify historical similarities and differ
ences between the workshop and printmaking practices in Chicago. This comp
arative approach offers factors that have contributed to Chicago’s print
making scene\, such as the founding of the South Side Community Art Center
\, the flight of African Americans from the South and Jews from the Soviet
Bloc\, the Black Arts Movement and communal skill sharing cultivated in n
ow-shuttered print shops and contemporary printers’ guilds.\n\nThe exhib
ition also includes photographs and video excerpts from "The Only Thing Th
at Lasts\," an oral history film documenting the lived experiences of the
workshop's multigenerational community. Produced by Camille Crain Drummond
and funded by the Hauser and Wirth Institute\, the oral history includes
narratives from artists and cultural workers such as robin holder\, Dindga
  McCannon\, Eleanor Magid\, Nitza Tuiño\, and Richard Powell.\n\n\nArtist

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Center for Native Futures and the UIC
Native American Support Program.\n\nExpanding on storytelling’s importan
ce in Diné (Navajo) cosmology and philosophy\, Dakota Mace’s practice a
cross photography\, weaving\, beadwork and installation contends with how
land is a carrier of memory. Hózhó (balance) in Diné is articulated thr
ough four: the four cardinal points\, the colors black\, white\, blue and
yellow\, and the cross\, a motif representing Na’ashjéii Asdzáá (Spid
er Grandmother). These concepts appear in Mace’s work in a manner that c
elebrates the oral traditions and craft passed through generations. For in
stance\, her approach to commemorating the plight of Dine ancestors at the
hands of the U.S. Army in 1863 has taken the form of cameraless photograp
hic prints\, created by exposing light-sensitive paper to natural elements
in the Bosque Redondo landscape\, where they were interned. For this lect
ure\, Mace delves into the cultural significance of the materials she empl
oys.\n\nAccess information: This program is free and CART captioning will
be available. For questions and access accommodations\, email gallery400en
gagement@gmail.com.\n\nAbout\n\nDakota Mace (Diné) is an interdisciplinar
y artist who focuses on translating the language of Diné history and beli
efs. Mace received her MA and MFA degrees in photography and textile desig
n at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her BFA in photography from t
he Institute of American Indian Arts. She has worked with numerous institu
tions and programs to develop dialogue on cultural appropriation and the i
mportance of Indigenous design work. Mace is an MFA in studio arts faculty
member at the Institute of American Indian Arts and the photographer for
the Helen Louise Allen Textile Center and the Center of Design and Materia

DESCRIPTION:Nationally\, there are increasing conversations about reparati
ons for long histories of racial harm. In the last decade\, there have bee
n multiple efforts across Chicago and Illinois to undertake reparations\,
including work to document the history and extent of harm\, to address and
repair harm done\, and to make payments to harmed communities and individ
uals. These efforts have ranged widely\, including organizing in Chicago o
n behalf of the Burge Torture Survivors in Evanston to address long histor
ies of discrimination in housing\, arts/activism-related efforts to addres
s the history and present harm of land sale contracts in the Englewood nei
ghborhood in Chicago\, and the State of Illinois’ legislative creation o
f new African Descendants Citizens Reparations Committee.\n\nThis panel ev
ent\, sponsored by the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy\,
will examine what we can learn from these efforts — some initiated by go
vernment entities and some initiated by community organizers\, and organiz
ations making demands on behalf of communities that have been harmed.\n\nR
ead more and register for this event.
